Your phone may be all you need for a voice memo, a quick video, or a nearby speaker—but that depends on the room, the recording app, and how close the phone is to the sound. There is no universal proof that an unspecified phone outperforms an expensive USB microphone. Try your own phone first, then consider an external mic only if you can identify a problem it needs to solve.
What your phone can do—and what that does not prove
On iPhone, Apple’s Voice Memos guide documents recording with the built-in microphone, a supported headset, or an external microphone. Its practical advice is to adjust the recording level by moving the microphone closer to or farther from the sound source. That makes your existing phone a sensible first test; it does not guarantee suitable results for every task or phone.

The same guide documents Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum controls, as well as mono, stereo, and Spatial Audio recording choices where supported. Some options are model-dependent, and Wide Spectrum is unavailable on some models. These are iPhone-specific features, not settings every iPhone or Android phone necessarily offers.

Why the room and recording job matter
A mic recording a nearby speaker in a quiet room faces a different problem from one capturing a person across a table, a busy outdoor conversation, or a music performance. DXOMARK’s smartphone audio testing overview evaluates separate dimensions such as tone, spatial performance, dynamics, volume, artifacts, and background sound across scenarios including meetings, outdoor conversation, selfie video, and concerts.

DXOMARK notes that phone microphone count and placement vary, that nearby surfaces reflect sound, and that phones may process audio based on the recording scenario. A comparison based only on “phone” versus “USB” overlooks those variables. A directional external mic aimed at a speaker can help with a particular placement or background problem; it is not automatically better for every recording.
Try this phone-only test before spending money
- Choose the real task. Record the kind of voice or sound you actually need—such as a spoken video, interview, or meeting—in the room where you expect to use it.
- Start with the built-in recorder. On iPhone, open Voice Memos and make a short sample. On another phone, use its available recording app; app features and controls vary.
- Move the phone closer. Keep it safely positioned near the speaker, rather than across the room, and record again. Compare whether the voice is clearer and more prominent.
- Listen for the problem, not just loudness. Check voice clarity, room echo, background noise, handling or wind noise, distortion, and whether the tone sounds natural for your use.
- Decide whether an external mic addresses a specific shortcoming. If closer placement solves the issue, you may not need another microphone. If the speaker must move away from the phone or background sound remains troublesome, test a compatible external mic in that setup.
How to make a fair phone-versus-mic comparison
If you have access to both options, compare recordings made for the same task. Keep the speaker, room, mouth-to-mic distance, app, gain, and post-processing as consistent as possible. Match playback loudness before judging: a louder file can seem better even when its clarity or tone is not. These controls are a practical comparison method, not evidence that a test has been performed here.

Judge the finished recordings on the qualities that matter to your use: voice clarity at the intended distance, room and background pickup, clipping or other artifacts, handling and wind noise, natural tone, and stereo or spatial capture if relevant. A meeting memo, a moving on-camera speaker, and an ensemble recording do not call for the same result.
When an external USB mic is worth considering
An external mic is worth testing when it solves a real capture constraint—for example, when the speaker cannot stay near the phone or a directional mic can be placed closer and aimed at the voice. RØDE’s mobile-use guidance describes directional USB shotgun microphones as a way to isolate a voice from some off-axis sound in phone video or calls. The benefit depends on the microphone, its position, the room, and the device; manufacturer guidance is not proof that USB mics always sound better.

One specific option RØDE lists for iOS and Android is the VideoMic GO II. Treat it as a candidate for a defined need, not a default upgrade: check the exact phone, app, connection, and power requirements before buying.

- Phone and connector: A USB-C phone and a Lightning iPhone may need different connection arrangements. RØDE’s compatibility information specifies MFi cables for Lightning iOS devices and notes that some marked products require Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter.
- App and task: Input behavior can vary by phone and app. RØDE says its stated USB-microphone use on iOS is for audio recording rather than phone calls; do not assume a microphone that records successfully will also work for calls.
- Power: Some microphones may need more power than a phone supplies. Confirm the mic’s requirements and the phone’s ability to power it, including whether an adapter or other arrangement is needed.
Compatibility listings and manufacturer guidance can help narrow the options, but verify the precise setup you intend to use. A supported connector alone does not establish that every app or call workflow will work.
