The plan was to merge the teams and products under the Beeper brand, with Beeper co-founder Eric Migicovsky becoming Automattic’s Head of Messaging. Beeper initially continued as an independent operation inside Automattic’s “Other Bets” division.
The result is not a new social network or an iMessage replacement. Beeper is a unified inbox and bridge layer that lets people use several existing messaging services from one interface. Since the acquisition, its architecture, pricing and supported connections have changed substantially, including a move toward on-device connections and paid Plus tiers.
What Automattic actually bought
Beeper was a universal messaging application: one app for conversations spread across services that normally require separate clients. Its original pitch included a unified inbox, cross-service search, scheduled messages, folders, archiving and automatic handling of some two-factor-authentication codes. It ran on mobile and desktop platforms and had just over 115,000 users while still in beta when the acquisition was announced. The waitlist was removed on the announcement day, making the service broadly available.
Automattic’s announcement described Beeper as supporting 14 chat networks at the time. That is a historical figure, not a promise about the current product. The present service describes itself as supporting more than 10 networks, with the exact list and connection methods changing over time.
#1 Best Overall
- CONNECTS THE BLIND. The RealSAM Pocket is technology for the blind and visually impaired. Just tell the Pocket what you want it to do; no more poking small buttons trying to find something that works
- VOICE OPERATED SMARTPHONE: Make calls, add contacts, send and read text messages with the convenience of your voice. Say "call my daughter" and it dials for you. Similar thing for texting. English only
- UNLOCKED 5G: This unlocked 5G smart phone works with all major carriers and most of the others. It does not work with any aggregator that requires you to install an app to set up their service. Easiest way to get a SIM card is to select your carrier and do it online
- STAY ORGANIZED AND INFORMED. You can easily access location services by saying, "Where am I?" or "What's around me?" Stay on top of your appointments with smart reminders. Enjoy information such as local or global time and weather with a simple tap. Use Chrome and Maps to access directions and the world around you. Bluetooth and Wi-fI enabled
- SIGHTED VOLUNTEERS: Get assistance from sighted volunteers with "Be My Eyes" Feature. Through a live video call, volunteers supply blind and low-vision users with visual assistance for tasks such as matching colors, identifying objects, checking if the lights are on, preparing dinner
Automattic is the company behind WordPress.com, Tumblr, Woo, Pocket Casts, Day One and Simplenote, among other products. Its stated interest was strategic: messaging is another fragmented part of online communication, and Beeper offered a consumer-facing interface for bringing those services together. Automattic supplied capital, infrastructure and experience operating products with open-source-oriented components, while Beeper supplied the technology and team.
The official announcements did not disclose a purchase price. TechCrunch reported a $125 million valuation for the deal, but that figure should not be treated as an officially confirmed transaction term.
Why the “messaging super-app” label needs qualification
Beeper does not own WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger, Telegram or the other networks it connects. It cannot set their policies, guarantee their APIs or make every native feature available in one interface. “Super-app” describes the ambition of a single control panel for many services, not a replacement network in which everyone creates a new Beeper identity.
Some actions still require the native application, particularly certain calling and network-specific functions. A service can also change its authentication or API rules and break an integration without Beeper controlling the outcome.

How Texts.com fits into the story
Automattic acquired Texts.com before it acquired Beeper. The two teams pursued a similar idea—one place for multiple messaging services—so Automattic said they would merge over time under the Beeper brand.
Texts initially remained available as a separate product. During the later subscription transition, it stopped accepting new registrations. Texts Personal users were directed toward Beeper Plus, while Texts for Work users were mapped to Beeper Plus Plus. Existing customers could still access billing history and earlier subscription information through Texts.com according to Beeper’s transition documentation.
Beeper’s legacy-user transition guide is the authoritative reference for an individual account’s entitlement; legacy limits can differ from those for new accounts.
Beeper Mini and the Apple dispute
Beeper Mini was a separate Android app that briefly attempted to provide iMessage functionality. Apple blocked the service, leading to a public dispute as Beeper tried to maintain access. The acquisition announcement called Beeper Mini “briefly available”; it did not present the project as the foundation of the acquired company.

That distinction still matters. Beeper’s current product pages focus on supported third-party networks and do not establish an officially supported iMessage client. Apple does not endorse Beeper, and Beeper should not be described as providing native iMessage access.
What changed after the acquisition
The waitlist ended
On April 9, 2024, Beeper removed its waitlist and opened the product more broadly, moving beyond its limited beta phase.
The architecture moved toward the device
On July 16, 2025, Beeper introduced on-device connections. In this model, the app connects directly from the device to a supported messaging network instead of routing every connection through Beeper Cloud. Beeper says this reduces the middle layer and can preserve the underlying network’s end-to-end-encryption model where that network supports it.
The trade-off is setup. Adding another phone, tablet or computer can require repeating connection steps. Cloud connections remain relevant for some networks and situations while Beeper gradually deprecates the older model rather than removing every cloud bridge at once.

Subscriptions were added
The current product has a free tier and two paid plans. Paid options increase account capacity and add productivity features such as scheduling, reminders and transcription; they do not remove the limitations imposed by the underlying networks.
The network list continued to evolve
Beeper’s June 23, 2026 update announced a LINE bridge, initially available through Beeper Cloud. This illustrates why a support list should be read together with the connection method and support matrix rather than treated as a guarantee that every feature works everywhere.
How Beeper works today
Supported networks
The current public product page lists:
- Telegram
- Signal
- Messenger
- X
- Google Messages
- Google Chat
- Google Voice
- Discord
- Slack
LINE was announced as a newer bridge in June 2026. Availability can differ by platform, account type and connection method. Check the support matrix before moving an important account.
Supported devices
Beeper is available on iPhone and iPad, Android, macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows, Linux and ChromeOS. Messages are designed to sync across devices, but the setup and available connection method depend on the network.
Best Value
On-device versus cloud connections
| Connection type | What it means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| On-device | The Beeper app connects directly from your device to the supported network. | Potentially stronger privacy and fewer middle layers, but more setup when adding devices; not available for every network. |
| Cloud | Beeper Cloud operates the bridge between the app and the external network. | Can simplify some connections, but places Beeper’s bridge infrastructure between the device and service. |
Do not describe all Beeper chats as end-to-end encrypted. The security outcome depends on the underlying network and whether the connection is on-device or cloud-based. Beeper’s FAQ and terms provide the applicable product and legal details.
Practical limitations
- Video calls and other advanced actions may require the native client.
- A network policy or authentication change can disable an integration.
- Multiple accounts per network may require a paid plan and an on-device connection.
- Beeper is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple, Google, Meta or the other integrated services.
- Self-hosting is possible in some configurations, but it requires technical administration and is not the same as Beeper’s hosted service.
Current Beeper pricing
The following prices and limits were listed in Beeper’s official documentation on August 18, 2026. Taxes, app-store billing and promotions can change the amount charged.
| Plan | Price | Account allowance | Notable features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beeper Free | Free | Up to five total connected accounts, generally one per network | Core unified inbox and self-serve support |
| Beeper Plus | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | Up to three accounts per network and 10 total accounts, subject to connection restrictions | Send Later, Chat Reminders, Incognito Mode, voice-note transcription, custom app icons, AI in supported desktop setups and extra account capacity |
| Beeper Plus Plus | $49.99/month or $499.99/year | Unlimited accounts | Priority support and Plus features |
Beeper says annual plans include two free months compared with monthly billing. Apple or Google may manage subscriptions purchased through their app stores rather than Beeper directly.
Who should use Beeper?
Good candidates
- People who regularly switch among several personal and work messaging networks.
- Users who want one searchable, cross-device inbox.
- Power users managing multiple accounts or relying on scheduling, labels and reminders.
- People comfortable completing connection setup and checking which features each network supports.
Reasons to stay with native apps
- You need every network-specific feature, especially calling or advanced media tools.
- You require an officially supported iMessage solution.
- You do not want a cloud bridge or per-device setup work.
- Your organization needs validated enterprise administration, retention, compliance or guaranteed support.
Is Automattic building a real super-app?
Automattic gave Beeper the resources and runway to become a serious unified inbox, and the product is more mature than the acquisition-day announcement suggested. The on-device architecture, paid tiers and expanding platform support show continuing product investment rather than a simple brand consolidation.
