Been Told to Pay at a Bitcoin ATM? Read This First

An unexpected demand to deposit cash at a Bitcoin ATM to protect money or resolve a problem is a scam. Stop, verify independently, and act quickly if you paid.

Stop. If someone unexpectedly tells you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money, fix an account problem, pay a fine, or resolve an investigation, do not pay. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says no legitimate government agency or business will tell you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money or fix a problem. Hang up, do not scan their QR code, and verify the claim through a contact route you know is genuine.

Why a Bitcoin ATM payment demand is a scam

The caller or message may claim your bank or investment account has suspicious activity, you are under investigation, a package is tied to a crime, or a utility will be shut off. The person may pose as a bank, business, government agency, police officer, or tech-support worker. A familiar name, convincing story, or caller ID that looks genuine does not prove the contact is real; caller ID can be faked.

Scammers often create urgency, tell you to keep the matter secret, and stay on the phone while you withdraw cash and travel to a Bitcoin ATM. They may send a QR code and coach you through buying cryptocurrency and sending it to a wallet they control. The supposed “safe account,” “government wallet,” or “secure deposit” is not real: the transaction sends money to the scammer.

The FTC puts it plainly: “No matter what the caller says, there’s no such thing as a government Bitcoin account or digital wallet.” FTC consumer advice, March 2024.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

If the caller claims to be law enforcement, the FTC says: “Real law enforcement officers won’t call to insist that you pay fines by cash, gift card, cryptocurrency, payment app, or a wire transfer service — and never as a way to buy your way out of a ‘crime.’” FTC consumer advice, June 2025.

What to do right now

  1. Stop the transaction. Do not withdraw cash for the caller, insert cash into a Bitcoin ATM, buy cryptocurrency, or scan a QR code they supplied. Do not let them rush or coach you.
  2. Hang up or stop replying. Do not call the incoming number back or use a link or phone number from the message.
  3. Verify the claim independently. If you are worried about a bank, investment account, business, utility, or police matter, find its contact details yourself using an official statement, an app, a website, or another source you already trust.
  4. Tell someone you trust before acting. Scammers may try to keep you alarmed and isolated. A pause and a second opinion can help break that pressure.
  5. Report the attempt. Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How common are Bitcoin ATM scams?

FTC figures show the scale of reported losses, not the total number of incidents or what will happen in any individual case. In data published in September 2024, the FTC said consumers reported losing more than $110 million to Bitcoin ATM scams in 2023. For January through June 2024, reported losses exceeded $65 million, and the median reported loss was $10,000. During that six-month period, consumers over 60 were more than three times as likely as younger adults to report losing money to these scams.

If you already sent cryptocurrency

Contact the Bitcoin ATM operator or cryptocurrency exchange immediately. Tell them the transaction was fraudulent and ask whether it can be reversed or refunded. Then report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Keep receipts, transaction details, wallet information, messages, and caller information to explain what happened.

Do not assume the payment can be recovered. The FTC warns that cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as credit and debit card payments and can be difficult to get back. Some state laws may help; the National Conference of State Legislatures provides state-specific information and related recovery guidance.

If you also paid another way

If the scam involved a bank transfer, payment app, wire, or card as well, contact that bank or service immediately and ask whether the payment can be reversed. Recovery steps depend on the payment method; the FTC’s scam recovery guidance explains what to do.
