A Beaver Builder design kit is a folder of shared design rules and page files that an AI coding agent can create locally and Beaver Builder can import into WordPress. It is not a running WordPress site: you author and preview the files locally, then upload a ZIP and choose which pages to bring into your site.
What is a Beaver Builder design kit?
Beaver Builder describes a design kit as the local folder where a design system, its pages, and optional global elements live. Its kit format includes a specification that an AI coding agent can use to create files for import. The folder behaves like a static site, so you can build and preview it with ordinary local tools before bringing its pages into WordPress. Beaver Builder’s design-kit documentation explains the format.

- Design system: shared tokens, base CSS, and any shared JavaScript.
- Pages: page files styled to use the shared design system.
- Optional global elements: shared components such as a header, footer, or both.
- Optional assets: local images used by the pages.
The kit is a portable authoring package, not hosting, a live WordPress installation, or a WordPress Studio Blueprint.
How do you build a WordPress site locally with AI?
The documented workflow is to have an AI coding agent write the kit files from a specific brief, then import the resulting ZIP into Beaver Builder. You can start from a blank kit, a downloaded starter, or a kit exported from an existing design system.
- Choose a starting kit. Use a blank kit, a downloaded starter, or an export of an existing design system.
- Give the agent the kit folder and a concrete brief. Beaver Builder’s example is to build a five-page site for a landscaping company. Specify the pages, content, visual direction, and any shared elements you need.
- Have the agent author the files. The documented locations include
design-system/styles.cssfor styles,pages/for page files,globals/for optional shared elements, andassets/for optional local images. - Preview and refine locally. Check that pages follow the shared styles and that links and assets work before importing. Local development keeps this testing separate from production; the WordPress Theme Handbook recommends using a development environment to test code before it goes live.
- Package the kit as a ZIP. Zip the kit folder so it can be uploaded through the Beaver Builder importer.
- Import and select pages. In Beaver Builder, go to Design Systems > Import a Kit, upload the archive, review it, and choose the pages to import. The importer validates the archive. Supported JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP assets can be added to the WordPress media library, with their references updated during import. See the Beaver Builder design-kit guide for the kit and import details.
Beaver Builder’s documentation describes nine bundled starter kits; that is a product count in its documentation, not a measure of the wider market. The exact starter-kit inventory may change, so check the live interface when choosing one. Beaver Builder’s guide describes the starter kits and import flow.
Which local WordPress environment fits the job?
The kit workflow and local WordPress environments solve related but different problems. A kit holds authorable pages and a design system; Studio and Playground provide ways to run or prototype WordPress itself.

| Option | Where it runs | What it is for | Persistence and path onward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beaver Builder design kit | Local folder; previewed with local tools | Authoring a design system, pages, and optional global elements for import into Beaver Builder | The files form a portable package; upload the ZIP and select pages in Beaver Builder. It is not a running WordPress site. |
| WordPress Studio | Desktop application | Creating and developing local WordPress sites, with features including AI-assisted Studio Code, debugging, and import/export | Works with local sites and offers hosted previews and syncing for eligible destinations. Current documentation lists macOS 13 or newer, 64-bit Windows, and 64-bit Debian-based Linux. Studio documentation |
| Studio Blueprint | JSON recipe used with Studio | Setting up a fresh Studio site with chosen WordPress and PHP versions, plugins, themes, content, and settings | Reusable site-configuration recipe, not a set of Beaver Builder page files. The guide features Quick Start, Development, and Commerce starting points, plus a gallery of other environments. Blueprints guide |
| WordPress Playground | Browser | Zero-setup WordPress experimentation and prototyping | Runs WordPress in client-side WebAssembly inside a browser sandbox. It is useful for quick experiments but is not the same as a persistent desktop Studio site. Playground Handbook |
Choose the kit route when your goal is to author pages and shared visual rules outside WordPress, then import those files into Beaver Builder. Choose Studio when you need a desktop-based local WordPress site for development. Playground is suited to fast browser-based experiments where setting up a desktop site is unnecessary.

Do Studio previews or sync require an account?
Studio’s hosted previews and sync are separate from Beaver Builder’s kit import. WordPress.com’s product page says a WordPress.com account is required for preview sites and sync. It lists sync for WordPress.com sites on paid plans and Pressable sites with Jetpack enabled. The same page, crawled October 7, 2026, says hosted previews remain active for seven days after their last update and an account can have up to ten free previews at a time. These are changeable product limits; confirm current terms before planning around them. WordPress Studio product details

Does “AI locally” mean the AI model runs on your computer?
Not necessarily. In the kit workflow, “locally” describes where the kit files are authored and previewed; an AI coding agent is the tool that writes those files. That does not establish whether the agent’s model runs on your hardware or through a hosted service.
WordPress also has AI components that are a separate matter: the AI Client, Abilities API, a separately installed AI plugin, and MCP Adapter. Learn WordPress gives Ollama and llama.cpp as examples of local providers that can run models on a user’s hardware without per-request provider costs, but this requires hardware capable of running a language model. A local model provider is not itself the coding agent that authors Beaver Builder kit files. Learn WordPress’s overview of WordPress AI

What to check before choosing this workflow
- Kit versus site: A design kit contains files to import; it does not replace a WordPress environment or host a published site.
- Importer expectations: Keep the kit structure intact and use supported image formats if you want images imported into the media library.
- Testing: Preview locally and validate the pages before importing them into a live site. Keep development separate from production, as recommended by the WordPress Theme Handbook.
- Environment requirements: Check Studio’s current platform requirements if you plan to use its desktop app; they differ from browser-based Playground.
- Account and eligibility: Confirm WordPress.com account, plan, and Jetpack conditions if your workflow depends on Studio previews or sync.
