Beats 360 is a real, released over-ear headphone—not a confirmed AirPods Max prototype. The “prototype we never got” idea works as a comparison: Beats has made a customizable, movement-oriented headphone with some visual cues that invite comparison to AirPods Max, but no available evidence establishes a shared design history or a cancelled Apple project. Announced September 22, 2026, Beats 360 launched at $349.99 in the U.S. and brings a different mix of features, including IPX4 resistance and support for Apple and Android devices.
What “the AirPods Max prototype we never got” really means
Beats 360 is a new Beats flagship model, not an unreleased prototype or a documented AirPods Max design. Its resemblance to AirPods Max is a visual comparison; it does not prove shared internals, a common development project, or that Apple cancelled an earlier version. MacRumors noted the design comparison in its launch coverage, but the available product and company materials do not establish a prototype connection.

As a metaphor, the phrase points to a plausible buyer question: what if an Apple-connected over-ear headphone put customization and activity-friendly features at the center? Beats 360 is closer to an answer to that question than evidence of an alternate AirPods Max. Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Music, Sports, and Beats, said the design was intended as “a new over-ear headphone for a different purpose,” according to TechRadar’s interview. That is the company’s stated positioning, not independent proof of superiority over AirPods Max.

Beats announced the headphones on September 22, 2026, with U.S. orders starting at $349.99. Store availability was scheduled for September 24. Apple’s U.S. Store listing also showed the headphones at $349.99 when accessed; regional prices, stock and offers can vary. Check the current listing before buying.

Beats also announced interchangeable cushion kits, each containing earcup and headband cushions. The standard U.S. price was $49.99. A $9.99 introductory price was offered in select markets through October 31, 2026, subject to conditions and while supplies lasted; that dated promotion should not be treated as the ongoing price. The Apple Store listing says extra cushion kits, a USB-C cable and a power adapter are sold separately.
How Beats 360 differs from AirPods Max
| What to compare | Beats 360 | AirPods Max |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Beats’ new flagship over-ear model, announced September 22, 2026. Beats announcement | A separate Apple headphone product; the cited launch materials do not establish a shared development history. |
| Design and customization | Fold-flat design, woven ripstop case, and interchangeable earcup and headband cushion kits in Performance Knit and UltraPlush options. Apple Store listing | Visual resemblance is a matter of comparison; these materials do not document shared design or components. |
| Activity and moisture | IPX4 sweat and water resistance under IEC 60529, according to Beats. This is not a waterproof rating. Beats announcement | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Noise cancellation | Beats claims up to 1.75 times more combined active and passive noise cancellation than Studio Pro, tested under IEC 60268-24. This is not a comparison with AirPods Max. Beats announcement | No matched independent comparison is established by the cited sources. |
| Platform features | Beats lists features for Apple and Android devices, with availability dependent on compatible hardware, software and region. Beats announcement | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| U.S. price at launch | $349.99, announced September 22, 2026. Beats announcement | Not stated in the cited sources; compare current prices in the same market and on the same date. |
Beats did not position the 1.75-times noise-cancellation figure against AirPods Max. Its published comparison is specifically with Beats Studio Pro under a stated test standard. A fair performance verdict between the two headphones would require matched independent testing, which the launch materials do not provide.

What Beats 360 offers in practice
Interchangeable cushions and a distinct look
Beats announced four core colorways—Black, Cloud, Pink and Sky—with matching Performance Knit cushions. Optional cushion kits include both earcup and headband cushions and come in Performance Knit and UltraPlush options. That makes changing the headphones’ appearance a documented feature; it does not establish that the battery, electronics or other components are user-replaceable.
Activity-oriented resistance, with limits
The official specification lists IPX4 sweat and water resistance. That rating does not make the headphones waterproof or suitable for every water sport. Beats warns that resistance can diminish with normal wear and says not to charge the headphones while wet.

Noise cancellation, microphones and battery claims
Beats describes a custom acoustic platform and its most advanced noise cancellation to date. Its claim of up to 1.75 times more combined active and passive noise cancellation is relative to Studio Pro and was tested in accordance with IEC 60268-24. Beats also lists nine microphones—eight used for ANC and three for voice pickup, with two shared between those functions—and Bluetooth 5.3.
Beats claims up to 32 hours of listening with ANC and Personalized Spatial Audio enabled. The company says that figure came from testing preproduction units in August 2026 under specified playback settings. Treat it as a manufacturer-reported result, not a guarantee of every user’s battery life.

Apple and Android support
Beats lists one-touch pairing, automatic switching, Audio Sharing, Find My and Personalized Spatial Audio among the Apple features. For Android, it lists Fast Pair, Audio switch, Find Hub and the Beats app. Feature availability can depend on the device, software version and region; the list does not mean the experience is identical on every platform.
Is Beats 360 a replacement for Studio Pro?
No. Beats presented 360 as a new flagship, while Studio Pro remained in the lineup. The company reduced Studio Pro’s U.S. price to $299.99 alongside the 360 launch. That positioning makes 360 a higher-priced sibling in the announced U.S. lineup, not simply a renamed Studio Pro. Beats’ noise-cancellation comparison is also against Studio Pro, not AirPods Max.
Best Value
- BEATS' CUSTOM ACOUSTIC PLATFORM delivers rich, immersive sound whether you’re listening to music or taking calls.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO via USB-C plus three distinct built-in sound profiles to enhance your listening experience
- HEAR WHAT YOU WANT with two distinct listening modes: fully-adaptive Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) and Transparency mode
- ENHANCED COMPATIBILITY with one-touch pairing and a robust set of native Apple and Android features
- PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO with dynamic head tracking place you at the center of an immersive 360-degree listening experience
Who should consider Beats 360?
- Consider it if interchangeable cushions, an activity-oriented design, IPX4 resistance, and support for both Apple and Android devices matter to you.
- Do not choose it on the prototype claim alone. The comparison is a useful way to describe its visual and product-role appeal, but no source here documents an AirPods Max prototype lineage.
- Compare current prices and performance before choosing between headphones. The $349.99 figure is the U.S. launch price, and Beats’ published ANC figure does not compare 360 with AirPods Max.
