BDXL is a recordable Blu-ray extension that raises capacity by adding layers to the disc. The 100GB triple-layer and 128GB quadruple-layer configurations are the figures to know, but whether a given drive can use them depends on that exact device, not on the Blu-ray name printed on the box.
What BDXL is
BDXL extends recordable Blu-ray by using more recording layers than standard discs do. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) published the finalized specifications on June 25, 2010. Standard single-layer and dual-layer Blu-ray discs hold 25GB and 50GB, so BDXL was designed as the next step up for users who need far more space on one disc.
Capacity and media configurations
The BDA’s announced configurations and the matching media entries in ISO/IEC 30193:2021 are summarized below. The capacities are format-level figures, not measured averages of real discs.
| Configuration | Layers | Capacity | Recording type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BDXL triple-layer BD-R | 3 | 100GB | Write-once | BDA, 2010; ISO/IEC 30193:2021 (100.0 Gbytes) |
| BDXL triple-layer BD-RE | 3 | 100GB | Rewritable | BDA, 2010; ISO/IEC 30193:2021 (100.0 Gbytes) |
| BDXL quadruple-layer BD-R | 4 | 128GB | Write-once | BDA, 2010; ISO/IEC 30193:2021 (128.0 Gbytes) |
| BDXL quadruple-layer BD-RE | 4 | Not stated | Rewritable | Not stated in the BDA 2010 announcement or the ISO/IEC 30193:2021 entries reviewed |
The 128GB quadruple-layer format is listed as write-once only. Anyone shopping for a rewritable BDXL disc should look for the 100GB triple-layer BD-RE configuration.

Compatibility: the check that matters most
BDXL media does not work in every Blu-ray device. The BDA’s position is that hardware designed for BDXL can play or record the new media, and that such recorders can also be designed to handle the existing 25GB and 50GB formats. That is a statement about what the format allows, not proof that any particular model supports it.
Before buying media or a drive, work through these checks:

- Find the exact model’s official specification sheet and look for explicit BDXL support.
- Confirm whether the device supports reading BDXL, writing BDXL, or both. A drive that reads a disc may still be unable to record to it.
- Confirm the recording type you need. The BDA’s FAQ states that BD-R requires a dedicated Blu-ray recorder or a computer disc drive, so a standard consumer Blu-ray player should not be assumed to handle BD-R media.
- Check the operating system and recording software. Some tools only support the formats they were built for, even when the hardware is capable.
Do not assume that a general claim that BDXL is supported equals compatibility with the device on your desk.
What BDXL was designed for
In its 2010 announcement, the BDA said BDXL was aimed mainly at commercial segments with heavy archiving needs, naming broadcasting, medical, and document-imaging organizations. It also described possible consumer use for recording high-definition broadcast and satellite programming in markets where set-top recorders were common. These were the association’s intended application areas at the time. The announcement did not establish how widely any of these uses have been adopted since.

- Archival Disc (Certified by Archive Disc Test Center ISO/IEC 16963). Brand: Ritek. Type: BD-R XL BDXL Triple Layer. Recording Type: Write-Once. Speed: 4X.
- Capacity: 100GB (Single Sided Triple Layer). Surface: White Inkjet Hub Printable
- A unique inorganic phase-change recording material with high sensitivity and high transmissivity enables the multi-layer structure. An extremely precise layer stacking technology ensures stable recording and playback with the multi-layer structure.
- Long-life design resists changes over time. High durability protects data from various situations. The inorganic recording material allows the Blu-ray Disc to withstand a minimum of 50 years of storage. Ritek "Tough Coat" protects against fingerprints, dust and scratches.
- Quantity: 10 Pack. Packaging: Spindle or Cakebox.
The BDA’s release included a promotional statement from Victor Matsuda, then chair of the BDA Global Promotions Committee, describing BDXL as a long-term and stable solution for archiving large amounts of sensitive data, video and graphic images. That is the association’s 2010 view. It is not an independent measurement of how long a disc keeps its data.
Using BDXL for archiving
BDXL’s capacity makes it a candidate for large archives, but there are open questions a careful archivist should answer before relying on it.

Longevity
The sources reviewed do not include an independently tested lifespan for particular BDXL discs. Capacity specifications do not answer how a disc ages under heat, humidity, or light, and they do not indicate how a disc’s dye or recording layers hold up over decades. If long-term retention matters, plan for periodic verification and copying rather than treating a single disc as permanent storage.
Current availability and adoption
The sources reviewed did not establish a current adoption rate or a market-wide availability picture for BDXL media or drives. Check current stock and model support directly before planning a project around the format.

File system and software
CyberLink, a software company, describes BDXL as multi-layer recordable BDAV media and refers to UDF 2.5 and 2.6 in its support documentation. That is a useful secondary explanation of how the discs are used in its software, but it is not a substitute for the BDA’s format documents. Confirm which file system your burning and reading software expects before writing an archive you need to open later.
