A battery swap station exchanges a compatible electric vehicle’s depleted, removable battery for a charged one. The station may recharge returned batteries on site, or store charged batteries for exchange while charging takes place elsewhere. A conventional EV with a permanently installed battery cannot use one simply because it is nearby.
What is a battery swap station?
A battery swap station (BSS) is a facility that replaces a depleted swappable battery with a charged one. India’s Ministry of Power defines a BSS as “a facility where fully or partially discharged swappable batteries are electrically charged and quickly replaced with recharged batteries” in its Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Battery Swapping and Battery Charging Stations.

The key requirement is a vehicle designed for battery removal and replacement. The vehicle, battery pack, connectors, charging equipment and operating network must also be compatible; there is no general interchangeability across EV makes or swapping networks.

- Arrive with a compatible vehicle. The vehicle must use a swappable battery accepted by that station’s network.
- Exchange the depleted pack. A person or automated equipment removes the depleted battery and supplies a charged compatible one. The exact mechanical process varies; there is no single universal method established by the official definitions.
- Recharge or store the returned battery. Depending on the station setup, the depleted pack is charged there or sent to a separate charging facility.
How is a swap station different from a battery charging station?
The terms refer to different functions. A battery charging station (BCS) recharges swappable batteries. A BSS handles the exchange and, under India’s Ministry of Power definition, may also charge returned batteries at the same facility.

| Configuration | What happens to returned batteries? |
|---|---|
| Charge-and-swap | The station charges returned batteries and exchanges charged packs on site. |
| Store-and-swap | The station stores charged packs for exchange; charging takes place elsewhere. |
Singapore’s Fire Code recognizes both charge-and-swap and store-and-swap arrangements. These configurations are not the same as ordinary plug-in charging for an EV with a fixed battery.
What makes a battery swap station compatible with a vehicle?
Interoperability means the relevant parts of the system work together: the vehicle, removable battery, connectors, charging equipment and, where applicable, communications and network arrangements. A station is useful only if it accepts the vehicle’s battery system. India’s 2022 draft policy discussed compatibility within a swapping ecosystem, but that document is historical draft context, not a binding current requirement.
Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) is one possible arrangement around swapping: a manufacturer or third-party provider may own and manage batteries, then lease or rent them to vehicle owners or fleet operators. It is a service or ownership model, not a different kind of physical station.

Requirements depend on where a station is installed. Singapore Civil Defence Force Fire Code clause 10.3.4, effective 2 March 2025 and shown as updated 3 September 2026, sets provisions for relevant BSS installations covering siting, ventilation, stored energy, separation, fire extinguishers and emergency isolation. These are Singapore requirements, not universal rules; operators must check the law and fire-safety requirements for their location.
The International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 62840-2:2025 sets safety requirements for covered EV battery swap systems, including protection from electric shock and other hazards, communications security, electromagnetic compatibility, marking and instructions. Its stated scope covers swappable battery systems (SBS) and handheld-swappable battery systems (HBS), within the supply-voltage limits specified in the standard. The 2025 second edition replaced the 2016 first edition and added, among other changes, provisions addressing interoperability and automated-handling safety.

A Government of India press release dated 22 December 2022 described lower upfront costs, minimal downtime and lower space requirements for charging batteries as aims of its proposed policy approach. It also identified interoperability standards as an objective. These are stated policy aims, not proof that every station or user will achieve those outcomes; the release provides no comparative performance statistic.
