There’s no universal winner: lowering brightness directly reduces the screen setting, while Battery Saver can cut power use more broadly by limiting background activity and, on some devices, other features. The best choice depends on your phone, its starting brightness and what you’re doing. If the screen is brighter than you need, turn it down; enable Battery Saver as well when you need more runtime and can accept possible delays.

Lowering screen brightness
Brightness reduction targets the display. Google recommends lowering screen brightness to help a charge last longer, but its guidance gives no universal percentage or runtime gain. The practical starting point is the lowest brightness that remains comfortable and readable for you.

Android’s Battery Saver is a broader measure. Google says it limits or turns off background activity; some features, network connections or apps may be delayed. The exact restrictions depend on the device. See Google’s Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.

On supported Pixel models, Battery Saver also disables Smooth Display. Google notes that Smooth Display increases battery use, but this Pixel-specific behavior should not be assumed for every Android phone. Which should you use?

Try lowering the brightness first if it is higher than you need. If you still need your phone to last longer, turn on Battery Saver too, provided its restrictions fit your needs. This is a practical sequence, not a measured claim that one setting always saves more.

What else affects battery use?
The screen setting is only part of the picture. Long navigation sessions, video, graphics-heavy games, tethering, prolonged GPS use and streaming can also drain a Pixel battery. When you need to stretch a low charge, reducing or pausing a demanding activity may matter alongside changing brightness or enabling Battery Saver.
