The fastest way to see what is left on a headset you already own is to read the level from the phone or computer it is paired with. Whether that works depends on the headset model and the operating system, so if the paired device shows nothing, move to the maker’s companion app, then to the headset’s own voice prompt or indicator lights. The menu names, light colors and time bands below are examples from specific manufacturers. None of them is a universal standard, so match each one to your exact model before you rely on it.
Start with the phone or computer the headset is paired to
This is the quickest check because nothing needs to be installed. Work through these steps in order:

- Turn the headset on and confirm that it is connected to the device you use most often. A headset that is paired with a different device, or connected only for calls on one profile, may not report its level to the screen you are looking at.
- Open the Bluetooth or accessory section of that device’s settings and find the headset’s entry. Look for a battery or charge reading next to it. Menu names differ between operating systems and between versions, so if you cannot find the entry in the first place you probably need the next step.
- If a level appears, note the reading and the time you checked it. If nothing appears, do not assume the battery is empty. Continue to the companion app or the headset’s own prompts.
Support material from individual manufacturers shows how much the answer varies. Sony documents a remaining-charge icon for its ULT WEAR headphones when they are connected to an iPhone or iPod touch over the Hands-Free Profile (HFP), a battery widget on iOS 11 or later, and a Bluetooth settings display on Android 8.1 or later. Huawei describes checking supported earbuds through the Bluetooth status area on Android (EMUI) or in iOS Control Center. Those are two different routes for two different products, and neither one is guaranteed for your headset.

Try the manufacturer’s companion app
If the paired device does not show a level, the maker’s own app is the next place to look. Apps usually read the battery directly from the headset, which is why they can sometimes report a reading the operating system does not. Only install the app listed for your model:

An app can only report what the headset sends it. If the app opens but shows no battery figure, check that the headset is connected in the mode the app expects, then look for the app’s own troubleshooting or connection screen rather than repeating the same check.
Use the headset’s voice prompt or indicator lights
Many headsets announce their charge, or flash and change color, without any software at all. This method is useful when you have no suitable phone or computer nearby. The details are model-specific, so treat the examples below as descriptions of one product each.

Voice prompts at power-on
Microsoft says its Modern Wireless Headset announces its remaining charge when it is powered on. HP describes voice alerts together with LEDs as a way to check status at power-on. Philips documents a spoken low-battery prompt, “Battery low,” on its SHB4385BK/00 and SHB4385BK/27 models. Dell’s WL7022 guide describes a method that combines a voice cue or LED response with the power switch. Dell’s guide does not describe what the voice cue says, so do not assume it matches Philips or Microsoft.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReading the LED colors
On the Microsoft Modern Wireless Headset, the light flashes amber while the headset is charging and turns solid white when it is fully charged. That is one model’s pattern, not a code for other headsets. Philips documents white LEDs during charging and lights turned off when charging is complete, for both the headset and its case on the models named above. If your headset has no published light guide, do not guess from color alone. The manufacturer’s model page is the only reliable reference.

Compare the checking methods
The four methods differ in what they show and which devices they need. Use this table to decide which one to try first for your setup.
| Method and example source | Where the reading appears | Type of reading | Headset, case, or both |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paired-device controls (Sony ULT WEAR, Huawei earbuds) | Phone or computer Bluetooth or battery settings, or iOS widget | Remaining-charge icon or display; Sony says it may differ from actual charge | Not stated in the Sony or Huawei material cited |
| Companion app (Microsoft Accessory Center, Audeze HQ, Plantronics Hub, Sony Headphones Connect) | App on Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android | Level shown in the app; Audeze HQ shows a percentage | Not stated for each app |
| Voice prompt (Microsoft, HP, Philips, Dell) | Spoken cue from the headset at power-on or when the power switch is used | Charge announcement, or a warning such as Philips “Battery low” | Philips: headset and case (LED behavior); others not stated |
| Indicator lights (Microsoft, Philips, HP) | LEDs on the headset or case | Color or pattern that changes with charge state | Philips: headset and case; others not stated |
Read the numbers with their limits in mind
Not every reading is a precise percentage, and the way a reading is produced affects how much weight to give it.

- Percentages can be estimates. Sony states that the remaining charge it displays may differ from the actual remaining charge in some cases. Treat a displayed figure as a guide, not a measurement.
- Some headsets report time, not percentage. Audeze describes an early warning at about one hour of battery remaining for the Penrose, and says the actual time varies with use. Philips’ “Battery low” prompt is described as roughly 30 minutes of use remaining for the models it names.
- Some apps use bands. HP’s guide groups battery status into the bands below. These thresholds belong to HP’s headset guidance and should not be applied to any other brand.
| HP band (as defined in HP’s guide) | Remaining time |
|---|---|
| Battery high | 12 hours or more |
| Battery medium | 2 to 12 hours |
| Battery low | 30 minutes to 2 hours |
| Battery critical | Less than 30 minutes |

When the level is missing or looks wrong
If none of the methods gives a usable answer, work through these checks before assuming a fault:
- Confirm that the headset is connected in the mode the device or app needs. Audeze says Bluetooth battery reporting varies by device and operating system, and that most consoles do not provide headset battery levels to its knowledge.
- Reconnect the headset to the device, or unpair it and pair it again, then recheck the same method.
- Compare what you see with the model guide. A reading that does not match the lights, prompt, or time band documented for your model is a reason to check the guide, not to trust either source.
- If the level still looks implausible, charge the headset fully using its own charging method, then check again. A battery that will not hold a charge needs a manufacturer’s service route, not a guess.
Skip the generic battery-checker gadget
The documented ways to check a headset are device controls, the maker’s app, the headset’s voice prompt, and its lights. Those methods work for the model they were written for. A third-party battery checker adds nothing to that list. Charging cables and replacement batteries are also model-specific, so buy them only after you have confirmed your exact model number and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for it.
