Choose Batocera if you want a PC that boots straight into a dedicated retro-gaming system. Choose RetroArch if you want to keep your current operating system and configure retro games in an application. Both can work with a keyboard, but neither guarantees that every game will accept mouse input: that depends on the game and the emulator or core running it.

Can you use a keyboard and mouse with Batocera?
Yes. Batocera’s desktop guide lists a keyboard and mouse among the accessories for a PC setup, including for standalone emulator configuration and light-gun games (Batocera desktop PC guide). The important distinction is between using those devices in the system and having every game support them.

Batocera’s controller documentation says EmulationStation binds a keyboard for one player, and Batocera does not use its controller configuration generator for keyboards. If the default keys do not suit a game, you may need to rebind controls in that game’s emulator. The guide also notes potential issues with non-default keyboard layouts, keyboards without anti-ghosting, and high debounce settings (Batocera controller configuration).

Mouse support depends on the game
A mouse being recognized by Batocera does not establish that a particular game can use it. Check the input options for the specific game and emulator before choosing a setup for mouse-based play. This matters especially when the target is a PC port, an arcade title, or a light-gun game: support at the desktop level is not the same as support in the game.
Is RetroArch easier for keyboard input?
RetroArch makes keyboard remapping available in its input settings, including mappings between a keyboard and its RetroPad abstraction, plus keyboard-to-hotkey mappings. Its Windows interface is designed with gamepad navigation in mind, but Libretro documents keyboard and mouse support for navigating it (RetroArch Windows setup; Libretro input and controls).

There is an important complication: some arcade and vintage-computer cores read keyboard input directly. RetroArch hotkeys can then intercept keys intended for the core. Libretro recommends using Game Focus or unbinding conflicting shortcuts in that situation (Libretro input and controls). For a game that expects direct keyboard input, test the required keys and hotkeys together rather than assuming a general controller mapping will cover it.

Which setup fits your PC and workflow?
Pick Batocera for a dedicated retro-gaming machine
Batocera is the more direct fit if the PC’s main purpose is to boot into a consolidated retro-gaming environment rather than remain a regular Windows desktop. Its guide recommends a storage device of at least 16 GB and 32 GB for full functionality; it notes that automatic updates cannot be downloaded when using only 16 GB. A USB drive or SSD with 32 GB or more is a practical starting point, with additional capacity if you plan to keep a large game library on it. Recent PCs may require a Secure Boot setting change before booting Batocera (Batocera installation guide).
Pick RetroArch to keep your existing operating system
RetroArch is the more natural choice if you want to launch retro games from an application without turning the PC into a separate boot environment. The documented Windows workflow is to install RetroArch, use the Online Updater to install one or more cores, and load content with a compatible core. The guide describes portable setup and names Windows 7 and later; because compatibility can change, check the current release information before installing on an older system (RetroArch Windows setup).

Will Batocera run well on your hardware?
Batocera’s desktop guide gives broad minimum guidance of 1 GB RAM, a 32-bit x86 processor, a 640×480 display, and graphics supported by nouveau/Mesa. Its recommended guidance is 2 GB RAM or more depending on the system being emulated, a supported GTX-, RX-, or HD-series graphics card, a 64-bit x86_64 processor, and a display at least as capable as the resolution required by the target system (Batocera desktop PC guide).

These are Batocera’s general platform guidelines, not a guarantee that every emulator or game will perform acceptably. Requirements depend heavily on which systems you want to emulate, and the guide warns that unsupported graphics can make the system very slow or unplayable. Judge hardware against your intended systems rather than treating the minimum figures as a performance target.

How to decide before you set it up
- Choose the operating workflow. Use Batocera if you want a dedicated bootable environment; use RetroArch if you want an application within your existing operating system.
- Name the games and input devices you care about. Check whether each target game and its emulator or core supports keyboard input, mouse input, or both. Platform-level device recognition is not enough.
- Plan keyboard configuration. In RetroArch, account for remapping and possible hotkey conflicts with cores that read keys directly. In Batocera, expect that custom keyboard controls may require rebinding inside individual emulators.
- Match hardware and storage to the plan. Batocera’s broad PC guidance does not guarantee performance for demanding systems; its guide recommends 32 GB storage for full functionality.
