To connect batch stages, record the upstream batch ID—or IDs—in each new batch record or its stage log. Those references form a lineage graph: follow parent references backward to find an output’s inputs, or follow child relationships forward to identify outputs affected by a suspect input.
What parent IDs solve—and what they do not
When each stage has its own log but no link to the preceding stage, the event records may exist while the relationship between them does not. A parent reference supplies that missing connection. For every new batch record, log the ID of the batch or batches that fed it.

Each batch is a node. A recorded parent ID creates a directed link from an upstream batch to the batch it helped produce. A new batch may have several parents when it combines inputs, and one parent may feed several downstream batches. This makes the relationship many-to-many across the full production chain.

Keep the lineage unit clear: a physical production batch ID identifies material genealogy, while a job or run ID identifies an execution in a data or orchestration system. They may be connected, but they are not interchangeable identifiers.
How backward and forward tracing work
Trace backward from an output
- Start with the finished unit or packaged batch involved in a complaint.
- Read its recorded parent batch IDs to find the preceding stage’s batches.
- Repeat at each stage, resolving every parent ID in the appropriate log, until you reach the inputs or receiving records.
In the cheese-production scenario described by I SOL, a packaged batch points to two cooking batches. Those cooking batches lead to a mix, which in turn traces to two milk batches and their receiving records. These are illustrative counts from that scenario, not production benchmarks.

Trace forward from a suspect input
- Start with the flagged input batch, such as a milk batch.
- Find records whose parent IDs include that batch.
- Continue the search through each downstream stage until you reach finished or packaged outputs.
The example describes one flagged milk batch flowing into a mix, then multiple cooking runs and multiple packaged batches. Unlike a backward walk, this requires a way to find children by parent ID. A parent value that can be written but cannot be searched does not, by itself, provide usable forward impact analysis.
Make the references usable in practice
Before adding parent IDs to a live process, check the current logging format and the path people will use to resolve them. The pattern depends on records that can store the references and on identifiers that remain stable and resolvable across stages.

- Identifier stability: Confirm that a batch ID continues to identify the same batch in the logs where it is referenced.
- Parent cardinality: Determine whether a stage can consume multiple batches and, if so, whether the log can record all of their IDs.
- Lookup path: Establish how users or software will find a record by its own ID and find child records by a parent ID.
- Consistency: Define when the parent reference is recorded and how missing or invalid IDs are handled.
- Retention and access: Check that referenced stage records remain available to the people and systems responsible for tracing.
These are implementation checks, not results tested by the manufacturing example. If the existing log cannot store or query the necessary references, achieving reliable lineage may require changes to the log, workflow, or storage design.

For orchestration lineage, a bare ID may not be enough to identify a parent across systems. The Apache Airflow OpenLineage provider documentation, version 2.20.2, describes a parent run using three fields together: parentRunId, parentJobName, and parentJobNamespace. It states, “If any of the three parent fields are missing, no parent facet will be created.” The documentation recommends including all six parent and root identifiers for a full hierarchy.

How that context reaches a child depends on the integration boundary. Airflow documents automatic hierarchy for tasks within one DAG. For a DAG run triggered through its REST API, parent or root context can be included in the run configuration. For external child jobs, parent information must be passed explicitly or through an injection mechanism. The OpenLineage dbt integration documentation describes options including the OPENLINEAGE_CONTEXT environment variable, the legacy OPENLINEAGE_PARENT_ID string, and programmatic ParentRunMetadata.

A lightweight parent reference in an application log is different from a framework-managed repository schema. For example, the Spring Batch reference documentation describes repository tables for job instances, executions, parameters, and steps. That illustrates an explicit metadata model; it does not establish that those tables are necessary for batch-to-batch genealogy or determine what a particular legacy system must migrate.
Choose the representation that matches the lineage question. Use physical batch references to answer which material inputs contributed to an output. Use job/run hierarchy to describe which software execution launched or depended on another. A system may need both, but one identifier should not be treated as a substitute for the other.
