Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Most Kaggle CLI commands do not need translating: PowerShell can run kaggle as an external command. The parts that do need attention are Bash-specific syntax—especially export, variable expansion, quoting, and line continuation—and whether PowerShell can find the same Python installation and Kaggle executable. Convert those pieces deliberately rather than changing credentials, PATH, or execution policy as a first resort.
First check that PowerShell can find Kaggle
Kaggle’s official CLI is a Python package installed with pip. Its current documentation specifies Python 3.11 or later and recommends kaggle --help to inspect the commands available in your installation. See the Kaggle CLI repository and Kaggle API documentation for current requirements and setup details.

- Open the PowerShell terminal where you intend to run the command.
- Run
kaggle --help. If help appears, the CLI is available in that terminal. - If PowerShell reports that
kaggleis not recognized, check which Python interpreter received the package and whether that installation’s Scripts directory is on PATH. Kaggle’s current Windows documentation identifies the scripts location as$PYTHON_HOMEScripts, but the correct path depends on your Python installation. - When installing for a particular interpreter, use that interpreter to invoke pip, for example
python -m pip install kaggle, then checkkaggle --helpagain. If you have multiple Python installations, make surepythonpoints to the one you intend to use.
A command working in Bash but not PowerShell often indicates different PATH values or different Python environments, rather than a Kaggle command that needs a different name. Avoid reinstalling globally or editing persistent PATH until you know which interpreter and Scripts directory are involved.
Keep Kaggle options; translate the shell syntax
For a simple command, retain Kaggle’s command and option names. Change only the parts Bash uses to pass arguments or manage the environment. The examples below follow the current official command shapes; check the installed CLI’s help and the Kaggle CLI reference if an option differs in your version.

Download competition data
A download can be run on one line in PowerShell:
kaggle competitions download COMPETITION_NAME -p 'C:UsersNameMy Data' --unzip
Replace COMPETITION_NAME with the competition identifier and choose a destination you can access. Quote a path containing spaces. The --unzip option requests extraction; Kaggle’s competition command reference describes the extraction and archive-removal behavior, so use it only when that outcome is intended. To select one file instead, keep the command structure and add the file option:
kaggle competitions download COMPETITION_NAME -f 'submission data.csv' -p 'C:UsersNameMy Data'
The competition reference documents the destination, extraction, and overwrite options. Verify the precise behavior and flags against the installed help before relying on them.
Submit a prediction file
Use PowerShell quotes around a message containing spaces, and quote a file path if it contains spaces:

The CLI reference uses a file and message for competition submissions. A single-quoted PowerShell string keeps dollar signs literal, which is useful when the message should not expand a variable.

Convert Bash variables and credentials safely
Bash and PowerShell use different syntax for environment variables. Bash’s export NAME=value does not become valid PowerShell by changing punctuation; use PowerShell’s $Env: scope instead. Microsoft documents this syntax in about Environment Variables.
$Env:KAGGLE_API_TOKEN = 'your-token-value'
This sets the variable for the current PowerShell process and programs launched from it. Do not paste a live token into shared screenshots, logs, or scripts committed to a repository. For interactive authentication, Kaggle also documents OAuth, token-file authentication, and the legacy kaggle.json approach; these are alternatives, not steps that all need to be performed. Use Kaggle’s current account and API documentation to create or manage credentials.
Rank #4
For a Bash example that expands a variable, such as "$NAME", decide whether expansion is intended. In PowerShell, "$Env:NAME" expands the environment variable; '$Env:NAME' passes those characters literally. PowerShell’s quoting and argument behavior are covered in Microsoft’s about Quoting Rules and about Parsing.
Translate paths, continuation, and operators by meaning
Quote arguments with spaces
Use quotes around a path or other argument containing spaces, such as 'C:UsersNameMy Data'. Single quotes are literal; double quotes allow variable expansion. A backslash in a Windows path is ordinarily a path separator, not a general-purpose substitute for Bash’s backslash escape or line-continuation character.
Best Value
Replace Bash line continuation
Bash commonly uses a backslash at the end of a line to continue a command. Do not copy that character mechanically into PowerShell. For short Kaggle commands, the most dependable beginner option is a single line. If you choose a multiline PowerShell command, use PowerShell’s continuation rules and check the result in your installed shell rather than assuming Bash formatting carries over.
Do not translate operators by character alone
Before converting &&, ||, command substitution such as $(...), a pipeline, or redirection, identify what the Bash construct is doing and select the PowerShell behavior for that task. The shell differs in parsing and argument handling; replacing slashes or punctuation without understanding the construct can change what Kaggle receives.
Do not change execution policy just to make Kaggle work
If the error says a script is blocked, inspect the effective policy and scopes before changing anything:

Get-ExecutionPolicy
Get-ExecutionPolicy -List
Microsoft’s about Execution Policies documentation explains scope precedence and notes that Process scope lasts only for the current session. It also states that execution policy is defense in depth, not a security boundary. A Kaggle command-not-found error is a different problem: check Python’s installation and PATH rather than making a broad, persistent policy change.
Use the error to choose the next check
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
kaggle is not recognized |
Confirm which Python interpreter received the Kaggle package and whether its Scripts directory is on PATH; then retry kaggle --help. |
| Authentication or token error | Check that you have configured one of Kaggle’s supported authentication methods and that the current PowerShell process can access the intended credential. |
| Argument or path error | Quote arguments containing spaces, confirm the destination exists or is writable as needed, and compare the option spelling with kaggle --help. |
| A script is reported as blocked | Inspect Get-ExecutionPolicy and Get-ExecutionPolicy -List; do not treat this as evidence that the Kaggle CLI itself is missing. |
Verify the command before relying on it
Kaggle’s CLI is evolving, and old examples or third-party API mirrors may show different flags from your installed version. Confirm the available command surface with kaggle --help, consult the official Kaggle documentation, and make only the shell-specific changes required to pass the intended arguments.
