Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn computer hardware, a barebone system is a partly assembled or configurable PC platform—not a standard package with a fixed set of parts. What comes in the box depends on the specific model, so check its listing before assuming it includes a processor, memory, storage, or an operating system.
What does “barebone system” mean?
“Bare bones” means reduced to essentials. In PC hardware, a barebone system is a starting platform that leaves some component choices or installation to the buyer. The term describes the system’s general setup, not a universal bill of materials. Lenovo’s glossary and the MythTV Official Wiki both describe configurations where users supply some components, such as a CPU, memory, or storage.

The phrase is also used outside consumer PCs. For example, a U.S. Department of Justice report used “bare-bones” for a proposed vehicle-monitoring computer arrangement, not a PC kit. In this article, barebone system refers to computer hardware.

What parts are included in a barebone system?
There is no standard list. A particular kit may include some core hardware while leaving other components to the buyer. Check the exact product listing and specifications for:
#1 Best Overall
- Supports AMD AM4 Socket Ryzen 2000, 3000, 4000 G-Series, 5000 and 5000 G-Series Desktop Processors, up to 65W
- Supports MAX Height ≦ 54mm CPU Cooler
- Supports 4 x DDR4-3200MHz DIMMs, up to 128GB
- 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 2 x SATA3, 1 x Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4)
- Graphics Output Options:DisplayPort, HDMI & D-Sub
- Processor: included, or a supported CPU that you must purchase separately
- Memory: whether RAM is installed, and the supported type and capacity
- Storage: whether an SSD or other drive is included, and the supported interfaces and capacities
- Operating system: whether one is included or must be installed separately
- Power supply and cooling: what is provided and whether it suits the intended configuration
- Accessories: such as a power adapter, cables, or other items needed to set up the system
Older and newer definitions may describe different combinations of components, another reason not to treat a generic parts list as a promise about a specific box. TechTerms’ glossary entry also illustrates that component lists can vary by definition and era.
What do you need to add?
Start with the product’s stated configuration and included-items list. If the system omits RAM or a drive, select parts that match its supported specifications; do not assume every barebone system needs the same additions. Confirm processor support, memory type and capacity, storage interfaces, available space, and any power or cooling limits before buying components.

- 【Connectivity & Expandability】--Intel NUC 13 Pro small computer comes with Intel i226 Ethernet port for speeds up to 2.5Gbps, supports WiFi 6E with 2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz three bandwidths & Bluetooth 5.3. It which could be connected with your mouse, acoustics or headset. It can work with server, monitoring equipment, office equipment, monitor, projector, TV and so on. Built-in fan cooling so you don't have to worry about multitasking overheating your product.
Then account for setup. A system without an operating system may require you to install one, and a kit missing an adapter or cable may need that accessory before it can be used. The included-items list and manufacturer specifications—not the word “barebone”—establish what is required.
How to compare barebone kits
Compare two specific products by their actual contents and constraints. A useful checklist is:

Compatibility can be more demanding in compact systems, where size and thermal limits may restrict component choices. Lenovo notes that smaller form factors can constrain compatibility. A “barebone” label alone does not establish either compatibility or value, and it does not prove that the finished system will cost less than a complete PC.
A recent example: Shuttle XPC slim DH810
In a report dated September 1, 2025, Tom’s Hardware described Shuttle’s XPC slim DH810 as a barebone mini PC. The report said it supports a user-selected Intel Core Ultra 200-series processor within stated thermal limits, along with DDR5 memory and SATA/M.2 storage options. It is an example of how the term is used, not a guarantee of current availability, price, or suitability; check the manufacturer’s specifications for the configuration you are considering.

Is a barebone system the same as a complete PC?
No. A complete PC is sold as a configured computer, though its exact software and accessories still vary. A barebone system is a platform with some choices or components left to the buyer. Before ordering either type, verify the exact box contents, but with a barebone kit also confirm that the parts you plan to add are supported.
