Bare is a small, modular JavaScript runtime built around a deliberately limited core. Instead of bundling a broad set of everyday APIs, it lets developers assemble the capabilities an application needs from modules. That approach is especially relevant when embedding JavaScript in a host application, but it also shifts more integration and compatibility work onto the developer.
What Bare is—and what “minimal” means
Bare is a JavaScript runtime for desktop and mobile, designed both to run scripts directly and to be embedded in other applications. Its project describes a foundation built on libjs, which provides low-level JavaScript engine bindings, and libuv, which supplies an asynchronous I/O event loop.

The runtime keeps its core API limited. The project documents a module system, CommonJS and ECMAScript module (ESM) interoperability, native addons, and lightweight threads; functionality beyond that core is provided through external modules. “Small box of parts” is a useful way to picture the design, provided it is not mistaken for a runtime that includes every convenience by default.

More control over the environment
An application author can select modules to fit the application’s requirements rather than inherit a large set of built-in APIs. This can be useful when JavaScript is one component inside a larger product, or when the host application needs to shape the runtime environment.

More assembly and maintenance
The trade-off is responsibility: developers must identify, add, and integrate the functionality they need. They also need to verify that their chosen modules work with the Bare version and target platforms they intend to support. A compact core does not automatically mean a simpler application.
Embedding is a central use case
Bare’s repository discusses embedding the runtime in a host application and provides a C API. That makes it relevant beyond the familiar pattern of installing a runtime and launching standalone scripts: a product can incorporate JavaScript execution as part of its own architecture.

The project also describes Bare as intended for embedding alongside code that may not be fully trusted and points embedders to a threat model. That framing is not a guarantee that running untrusted code is safe. Anyone building an embedded execution environment still needs to understand the threat model and design appropriate controls for the host application.
How module compatibility works
Bare documents bidirectional interoperability between CommonJS and ESM: modules using either system can interoperate with modules using the other. This is a compatibility feature, not a promise that every package written for another JavaScript runtime will work unchanged. Packages can depend on runtime-specific APIs, native components, or assumptions that Bare does not provide in its core.

- ELECROW Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5, CrowPi is equipped with a 9-inch HD touchscreen along with a camera; All the regular components used in DIY electronics are packed into the CrowPi development board, such as LCD, LED matrix, buzzer, light sensor, PIR sensor, ultrasonic sensor, IR sensor, etc
- Raspberry Pi Sensors: The Crowpi raspberry pi 5 programming kit is jam-packed with lots of buttons such as 19 different sensors in a tidy easy to use package; You don't have to wait and wire things
- Build Quality: Solid ABS shell and well made components in one place make it strong and convenient to travel
- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
Likewise, the project’s desktop and mobile aims should be read as design goals, not a guarantee that every module or application runs on every device. Check support for the specific Bare release, platform, and dependencies in your application.
How Bare differs from Node, Deno, and Bun
The useful distinction is design emphasis, not a performance ranking. Bare’s stated approach centers on a minimal core, modular additions, and embedding. When evaluating it alongside Node, Deno, or Bun, compare the built-in functionality you need, the modules and APIs your code expects, embedding requirements, and the platforms you must support.

- Fully assembled for plug-and-play operation
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM
- 256 GB PCIe Pi NVMe SSD (Pre-loaded with Pi 64-Bit OS)
- M.2 HAT+
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Pi 5
The cited descriptions do not establish that Bare is faster or more efficient than those runtimes. Choose based on fit for the application and verify compatibility with the actual dependencies and targets.
When Bare may—or may not—fit
- Consider Bare when you want to embed JavaScript in a host application, need a runtime with a deliberately small core, and are prepared to compose and maintain the required modules.
- Check carefully when your application relies on packages or APIs built around another runtime, or must work across several desktop and mobile targets. Confirm each dependency and platform combination.
- Look elsewhere or prototype first when you want a broad built-in environment with minimal assembly. Bare’s design makes module selection part of the application work.
Bytes issue #383 introduced Bare on April 11, 2025, as a return-to-simplicity approach to JavaScript runtimes. Its strongest point is a clear architectural choice—small core, modular capabilities, and embedding—not evidence of a universal replacement for established runtimes.
