Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want a Forgotten Realms adventure framed by Dungeons & Dragons rules, cinematic character scenes, and online co-op for up to four players. Choose Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition if you want to explore Larian’s earlier fantasy world of Rivellon and value a Story Mode difficulty option. Neither is the universal winner; the better fit depends on what you want from your next RPG.
How the settings and stories differ
Baldur’s Gate 3: the Forgotten Realms and a cinematic story
Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place in the Forgotten Realms, the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Its story centers on a mind flayer parasite, party relationships, and choices that affect how events unfold. Larian describes the game as a cinematic narrative and highlights seven Origin characters. Its official description says, “Every choice you make drives your story forward, each decision leaving your mark on the world.” That is Larian’s promotional framing, rather than an independent assessment. Divinity: Original Sin 2: an earlier Larian fantasy RPG
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is set in Rivellon. Its Definitive Edition is an updated version of the game; Larian says it was released on consoles and offered as a free upgrade to existing PC owners. Combat and character-building: what the official comparisons tell you
Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 combat as evolved turn-based combat based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Its feature page calls out team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, environmental interactions, and three difficulty settings. Those specifics make BG3 a clear choice if you want a combat system explicitly tied to D&D rules. They do not show that Divinity: Original Sin 2 is less tactical; the official sources cited here do not provide an equally detailed account of DOS2’s combat.
Larian published these system counts in a June 29, 2023 update as BG3 approached release. They are useful indicators of scope, but raw counts—and unlike categories—do not prove which game is better:

Larian’s BG3 feature page lists online multiplayer for up to four players. That makes it the straightforward choice between these two if you specifically want an online party of up to four. A maximum player count does not establish support for every local or cross-platform setup, so check the listing and current support information for your platform before planning a particular arrangement.

In April 2025, Patch 8 announced cross-play and split-screen on Xbox Series S. The patch rolled out to PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox on April 15, 2025. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement has the dated update details. The sources cited here do not establish an equivalent DOS2 co-op comparison.
Difficulty: DOS2 Definitive Edition has a named Story Mode option
Larian lists Story Mode among the changes and features of Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition. It is a reason to consider DOS2 if you want an option intended to put more emphasis on its story and less pressure on combat. BG3’s feature page lists three difficulty settings, but the cited material does not provide enough detail to equate one directly with DOS2’s Story Mode.

Platforms and editions: check the listing for your device
Platform availability has changed over time, so check the current store listing for your region and device before buying. Larian’s DOS2 FAQ lists PC/Mac, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and iPad, and describes a cross-save option for players who own both Switch and Steam copies. In a later announcement, Larian said DOS2 became available on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on December 15, 2025. Larian’s news page.
For BG3, Larian reported Patch 8’s April 15, 2025 rollout to PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox, and its official support and news pages reported a native Steam Deck build in September 2025. Patch 8 announcement. Platform support and edition listings can change; confirm the exact product listing rather than assuming every version offers the same features.

Which one should you play?
- Pick Baldur’s Gate 3 for a Forgotten Realms story, combat Larian explicitly bases on D&D 5e, cinematic character scenes, and online multiplayer listed for up to four players.
- Pick Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition to experience Rivellon in Larian’s earlier RPG, or if its Story Mode option is a meaningful draw.
- If you are undecided about combat or overall quality, the cited official comparisons do not prove one game is universally better or that DOS2 is less tactical. Choose by setting, presentation, difficulty preferences, and the platform you own.
