Before updating Baldur’s Gate 3, check Larian’s latest release note and the version shown by your own platform, back up saves you cannot afford to lose, confirm mod compatibility, and make room for installation—not just the download. Build numbers and storage needs can differ by platform and release, so do not treat an older version number or patch-size estimate as a universal current requirement.
What is the latest Baldur’s Gate 3 hotfix?
The newest official notice located is Larian Community Team’s September 29, 2026 post, “Small Hotfix,” which names game version 4.1.1.7631656. Larian says it addresses a crash when starting through the GOG Mac launcher, a PS5 crash when creating map markers, and a beard appearance issue. The notice does not provide a full version matrix for every platform, so confirm the build displayed by your launcher or console rather than assuming the same number applies everywhere. Read Larian’s September 29 hotfix notice.

- Match the release note to your platform and installed build. Check the announcement date, platform-specific details, and the version shown in your launcher or console. In an August 2026 announcement, Larian listed PC and PS5 as 4.1.1.7398727, Steam Deck as 4.1.1.7451994, and Xbox as 4.1.1.7445165. Those are numbers from that August announcement, not the September hotfix’s current platform matrix. See the August 2026 platform version list.
- Read the fixes that apply to your platform. The latest notice names a GOG Mac launcher startup issue, PS5 map-marker crashes, and beard appearance. Earlier hotfixes also targeted platform-specific problems, including crashes and performance issues, so a small update can still matter—but read what Larian actually says rather than assuming it fixes every issue you have.
- Back up saves you need to preserve. A major patch can have different save-compatibility implications from a small hotfix. Before Patch 9, Larian said saves from Patch 8 or earlier would no longer be compatible with Patch 9, and recommended a separate profile and a backup of the previous local profile folder for players who wanted to keep those saves. That was guidance for that specific historical transition; it does not establish that the September 2026 hotfix invalidates saves. Read Larian’s Patch 9 preparation guidance.
- Check mod updates before loading a modded save. Larian’s support guidance says a mod that needs an update shows an “Update” button in the in-game Mod Manager. For modded multiplayer, every player needs the exact same mods at the same versions. An older patch announcement also warned that mods could become temporarily incompatible after patches or hotfixes. Larian’s mod-management guidance.
- Check cross-save version and mod compatibility. Larian cautions that cross-saves can fail when the game versions differ between platforms. It also recommends making sure mods used across PC and console are available on both. This matters especially when you move a save between devices or play with a shared mod setup. Larian’s cross-save guidance.
- Leave room for installation work. The space requested by a launcher can exceed the update’s download size. In a March 2026 clarification about Hotfix #36, Larian Community Manager Salo explained that Steam or GOG may need temporary disk space to recompile existing files affected by a fix; that space should be freed after installation. This is an explanation of those launchers’ possible behavior, not a current universal space estimate. Read the Hotfix #36 storage clarification.
How to assess whether an update affects you
If you play on PC, Mac, Steam Deck, PlayStation, or Xbox
Start with the official note and identify its platform-specific fixes. Then compare the note’s stated version—if it gives one—with the version shown in your own launcher or console. Larian’s August 2026 announcement demonstrates why: its listed PC and PS5, Steam Deck, and Xbox builds had different numbers. The September 2026 hotfix notice gives one version number but no complete platform-by-platform list. Do not infer a missing version from an older announcement.

If your save uses mods
Check the Mod Manager for an “Update” button on affected mods, and check that every participant in modded multiplayer has the same mod set at the same version before joining. If you use cross-saves, also verify that the relevant mods are available on both platforms. A game update and a mod update are separate compatibility questions; a successful game update alone does not establish that a particular modded save or multiplayer session is ready.
If you need an older save later
Keep a backup before installing if preserving a save is important, especially around a major patch transition. Larian’s Patch 9 instructions are a dated example of a major update making earlier saves incompatible and of using a separate profile to preserve them. They are not current rollback instructions, and the available September 2026 note does not say that its hotfix requires a profile change or makes existing saves incompatible.

Why a small hotfix can ask for substantial disk space
The download size is not necessarily the amount of free space the installation process needs. Salo’s March 2026 clarification said Steam or GOG may request space to recompile existing game files affected by a fix, with that temporary space freed after installation. Because the requirement depends on the release and installer behavior, use the current launcher’s prompt rather than an old patch’s estimate as your guide.
