Neither type guarantees better sound or stream quality. For streaming, choose based on the ports on both devices, cable length, and whether you actually have a noise problem—not on connector shape alone.
What balanced and unbalanced mean
The terms describe how an analog audio connection is wired and how the receiving device handles interference. They do not describe a digital stream setting or guarantee a change in sound quality.
- Balanced: two signal conductors carry the audio, with a separate shield. A compatible receiving circuit can reject noise that affects both signal conductors in common.
- Unbalanced: one conductor carries the signal and the ground or shield serves as its return. Interference picked up by the cable can become part of the signal.
Focusrite Support says, “Balanced cables are far better at rejecting interference noise than unbalanced cables.” That is an advantage in the right setup, not a promise that changing cables will make every stream sound different. Read Focusrite’s connection guidance.
Do I need balanced cables for streaming?
Use balanced connections when both devices provide compatible balanced inputs and outputs, especially for a longer cable run or a setup near electrical equipment that may cause interference. A short unbalanced connection in a quiet room can work well. If you hear no cable-related hum or buzz, there may be no practical reason to replace it.

Before buying a cable, check the manuals or labels for the exact ports at both ends. Focusrite’s guidance is to use balanced cables when connecting equipment with balanced inputs and outputs. A cable alone cannot turn an unbalanced output into a balanced one.
Connector shapes: XLR, TRS, TS and RCA
| Connector | Common use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| XLR | Commonly balanced audio | Confirm that the XLR port is a balanced connection and that its signal type suits the device. |
| TRS | Can carry balanced mono audio | TRS can also carry unbalanced stereo, including headphone output. The jack shape alone does not establish the signal type. |
| TS | Commonly unbalanced audio | Check the port and signal level; using a different cable does not change the source’s wiring. |
| RCA | Commonly unbalanced audio | Use a connection compatible with the receiving input; it remains unbalanced unless suitable conversion equipment is added. |
A TRS plug has three contact sections, but that does not mean it always carries balanced audio. A TRS headphone jack may carry unbalanced stereo—left and right channels—while a balanced TRS line connection typically carries one mono channel. A balanced stereo pair normally uses separate connections for left and right. Focusrite explains the distinction in its guide to mic, line and instrument level.

- Balanced Audio cables utilize impedance balanced lines that reduce EM and RF noise.
- Balanced cables have a separate braided Shield to provide additional resistance to interference without modulating the interference into the signal. |Prevents ground loop issues.
- Xlr Male to female cables continue our tradition of bringing the highest quality cables at the best prices.
- These cables feature thick, heavy gauge wires, gold Plated connectors and sturdy connector housings.
- Connector Type: Hdmi To Dvi
Is XLR better than TRS?
Neither connector is inherently better. XLR and TRS can both be used for balanced connections; the right choice is the one that matches the balanced ports on your equipment. For example, an interface and powered monitors with balanced line ports may connect with TRS-to-TRS or TRS-to-XLR cables, depending on their port labels and manuals.
Do not infer compatibility from the connector alone. Check both the connection type and signal level. Mic, line and instrument signals are not interchangeable simply because a plug fits.

- Gold-Plated XLR connectors from Neutrik - a trusted name in the audio industry. 100% match with standard XLR interface that’s neither too loose nor too tight. Ensure smooth plugging and unplugging without damaging your device.
- Firmly Connected - Unlike generic connectors used by other brands like CM or AB, we use genuine Rean from Neutrik.
- Heavy Duty – We reinforce microphone cables with Kevlar, making them 30x more durable than standard xlr cables. Resists wear, tear, and accidental tugs to avoid premature fraying or breakage even with daily heavy use.
- Noiseless Design - Designed with an extra Aluminum layer and over 95% OFC braided shielding. Eliminates hum, static, and electromagnetic interference completely to deliver a crystal-clear, noise-free audio experience every time.
- Low Impedance XLR Balanced Cables - Built with 21AWG 99.99% OFC wires, Gold-Plated connectors, and fully soldered, wrapped cores to deliver ultra-low impedance and crystal clear audio clarity.
Can I use a TRS cable with RCA or TS gear?
Only if the cable and device ports are appropriate for the connection. An RCA output is commonly unbalanced, and instrument outputs are generally unbalanced. Connecting either through a TRS-ended cable does not make the source balanced. Use the receiving input intended for that connection and confirm the wiring in the equipment manuals.
For an instrument, use an input that accepts instrument level rather than assuming a balanced cable will solve a noise issue. For a consumer device with RCA outputs, expect an unbalanced connection unless you use suitable conversion equipment.

What to do about noise on a long run
First identify whether the issue is interference picked up along the cable, a ground-loop problem, or another source of hum. Balanced wiring can help reject interference when the source and receiving device support it, but it is not an automatic fix for every noise problem.
If you must connect a balanced output to an unbalanced input over a long distance, Roland’s recording guide describes running balanced cable for most of the distance, then using a direct box or matching transformer near the unbalanced input. Confirm that this arrangement suits your specific devices; the guide is older, so current equipment manuals should take priority. Roland support and product documentation.

There is no universal maximum cable length that applies to every setup. Noise susceptibility depends on the equipment, cable route and surrounding electrical environment. Line 6’s cable guidance also treats length as context-dependent rather than a single specification. Read Line 6’s Audio Cables 101.
