In ETH Zurich’s process, urease-producing bacteria convert urea into carbonate; calcium ions then crystallize as calcite bridges between sand grains. The printed piece hardens at room temperature in two to five days, with a fresh mineralization bath supplied each day.
The result is a promising architectural biocement, not a proven replacement for structural concrete. Demonstrated targets include facade parts, shading devices and partition walls, while long-term durability, predictable strength and load-bearing use remain unresolved.

How the bacteria make sand solid
The process is called microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), or biocementation. The bacteria do not become a glue. They act as catalysts and organizers for a new mineral phase: calcium carbonate, usually in the calcite form.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Prepare the bio-ink. Sand is mixed with water-based alginate and xanthan gel plus live ureolytic bacteria. The gel gives the mixture enough shape retention to pass through a printer and hold its geometry.
- Print the form. The bacteria-and-sand ink is deposited into the desired architectural shape, including geometries that would be difficult to cast conventionally.
- Mineralize in a bath. The printed object is immersed in a solution containing urea and calcium chloride. ETH’s reported procedure uses a fresh bath each day during the curing period.
- Grow the mineral bridges. Bacterial urease breaks down urea, raising carbonate availability. Calcium from calcium chloride combines with carbonate to form calcite crystals. Those crystals grow at contact points and mechanically interlock neighboring grains.
- Dry at room temperature. After mineralization and drying, the bacteria are no longer active. No oven is required.
ETH Zurich researcher Karen Antorveza Paez described the role succinctly: “We’re using bacteria to produce a sort of mineral glue.”

How long does 3D-printed biocement take to harden?
ETH Zurich and Phys.org reported a mineralization period of two to five days. The exact duration depends on the strength required for the component. Because the bath is renewed daily, this is a repeated-treatment process rather than a single pour-and-wait cure. The reported timing applies to the ETH process at room temperature; it should not be treated as a universal setting time for every MICP formulation.
Two ways to manufacture the material
| Route | How it is built | Reported direction |
|---|---|---|
| 3D biocement printing | Print a sand-and-bacteria bio-ink, then immerse the object in repeated urea/calcium-chloride baths. | Architectural elements such as facade components, shading devices and partition walls. |
| Robotic biocement spraying | A robotic arm deposits sand, bacteria and mineralization substances in separate streams, building a surface layer by layer. | A six-month continuous demonstration was reported at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale; mechanical-property characterization is less mature than for the printed-bio-ink route. |
Spraying is aimed at forming surfaces directly, whereas the bath-mineralized route produces a separately printed component. They therefore face different problems: sprayed work must control the arrangement of grains and bonding medium through the thickness, while immersed parts must achieve sufficiently uniform mineralization throughout their volume.
What has actually been demonstrated
A 2026 Cambridge Biotechnology Design paper formalized a design-to-biofabrication workflow and validated a 1 m² architectural partition-wall demonstrator. Its design model treats porosity, surface-area-to-volume ratio, interlayer connectivity and overhang capacity as linked variables rather than independent settings. The paper identifies partition walls and shading systems as plausible applications.

These demonstrations are architectural-scale proof of form and process, not certification for building frames. ETH researchers characterize the current material as closer to mortar than concrete. Load-bearing construction has not been established.
How strong is bacterial biocement?
Published strength figures depend heavily on the test setup and should not be transferred directly to a printed building element.
- A 2023 Frontiers study of airborne ureolytic bacteria reported estimated unconfined compressive strength of 4–8 MPa and 80%–90% precipitation of the calcium source in sand-column MICP tests. Those were laboratory columns, not the ETH architectural demonstrator.
- A 2024 ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces study found that three injections with APMDES-treated sand achieved the same strength gain as seven injections with untreated sand. The authors cautioned that treatment reduced bacterial viability and that the strength difference could not be explained simply by producing more calcium carbonate.
For a building component, engineers also need tensile and flexural behavior, crack resistance, bond between printed layers, moisture response, freeze-thaw performance, fire behavior and retention of properties over years. Those controls are still being developed.

Why geometry and porosity matter
Printing allows designers to place material only where it contributes to a surface, partition or shading function. But the same open geometry that saves material can make mineralization uneven. A high surface-area-to-volume ratio can accelerate access to the solution, while thick regions may be harder to mineralize uniformly. Interlayer connectivity affects both fluid penetration and final bonding. Overhangs must remain stable before the calcite network is complete.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Grain-size formulation is another unresolved variable. Particle size changes packing, pore pathways and the amount of mineral bridge needed to achieve a target strength. The spray route adds a further challenge because its separate material streams must produce a controlled internal arrangement, not just a hardened outer skin.
An earlier selective-deposition approach
A separate Materials & Design method selectively deposited sand together with urease-active calcium-carbonate powder. Regions left as pure sand served as removable support, allowing cementation solution to penetrate the printed volume while preserving sharply defined boundaries. This demonstrates another design strategy: support material and mineralizing material can be spatially programmed instead of treating the whole object identically.

Biocement versus Portland-cement construction
The useful comparison is not simply “bacteria versus cement.” A project team should evaluate the complete element and its service conditions across these axes:
- Curing energy: The ETH object cures at room temperature and does not require an oven, but the energy and infrastructure for preparing, circulating and replacing mineralization baths still count.
- Geometry and porosity: MICP can preserve highly porous, printed forms; porosity can also reduce strength and complicate uniform treatment.
- Mineralization depth and uniformity: Calcium-carbonate growth must reach interior interfaces, not only the exposed surface.
- Mechanical performance: Compressive results from sand columns do not establish tensile, flexural or load-bearing performance for architectural elements.
- Production time: The reported ETH cure takes two to five days with daily bath renewal, unlike a process designed around a single casting cycle.
- Chemical byproducts: Urea hydrolysis generates ammonium, which requires collection and treatment.
- Durability and service life: Long-term stability under weather, wetting, drying and repeated loads remains an open engineering question.
- Function: Current evidence fits decorative, partitioning, facade, shading and surface applications more closely than structural frames.
The sustainability condition: deal with ammonium
Urea hydrolysis does not produce only the desired carbonate. Ammonium is a byproduct, so a credible environmental assessment must include bath handling, recovery or treatment. Paez warned: “If we don’t factor the disposal of this chemical byproduct into our designs, then unfortunately using biocement for construction won’t be such a sustainable practice.”

Room-temperature curing can reduce thermal demand, but it does not by itself prove a lower total footprint. Water use, calcium and urea production, bacterial preparation, bath replacement and waste management all belong in the system boundary.
Best Value
What must be solved before structural use
- Reliable control of compressive, tensile and interlayer properties across different geometries.
- Uniform mineralization in thick or highly porous sections.
- Validated grain-size recipes and repeatable bacterial viability.
- Durability data for weathering, moisture cycles, freeze-thaw exposure and fire.
- Scalable treatment systems that manage ammonium-containing wastewater.
- Standards and safety qualification for manufacturing, installation and service life.
The research frontier is therefore control, not merely proof of concept. As Paez put it: “The big question is no longer whether biocement works, but rather how well its properties can be managed.”
Where the technology fits now
On the evidence available through 2026, bacterial MICP is best viewed as a way to fabricate mineral-bonded architectural components with unusual geometry and potentially lower-temperature processing. A 1 m² partition demonstrator and a six-month robotic-spraying demonstration show meaningful scale-up, but neither establishes a code-ready substitute for reinforced concrete. Projects considering the material should begin with non-load-bearing partitions, facade modules, shading elements or other components whose performance can be specified and tested independently.
