Backdoor Attacks vs. Adversarial Evasion Attacks: What’s the Difference?

Evasion attacks manipulate an input to change a model’s prediction. Backdoor attacks compromise the model so a specific trigger activates attacker-chosen behavior.

The key difference is when and what the attacker changes. An evasion attack changes an input at test or deployment time to make an otherwise unchanged model produce a desired mistake. A backdoor attack compromises the model—usually through poisoned training data or another change to the model—so it responds to a particular trigger in a way the attacker chose. A backdoor can be activated by an input at inference time, but that does not make its implantation an evasion attack.

What distinguishes evasion from a backdoor?

Machine-learning security uses these terms for different parts of an attack. Evasion describes manipulating a sample presented to a model so its prediction changes. A backdoor describes trigger-dependent behavior established in the model itself. The input can be involved in both: it is the object altered in evasion, while for a backdoor it carries the trigger that activates a previously implanted behavior.

The distinction is useful because the attacker’s access, the point at which the system is compromised, and the defenses that matter are different. NIST’s 2025 report, Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations (NIST AI 100-2e2025), describes evasion as modifying testing samples to create adversarial examples that alter predictions toward the attacker’s choices. MITRE’s Adversarial ML 101 distinguishes inference-time attacks from poisoning training data, while NIST’s What Is TrojAI describes trigger-dependent behavior associated with backdoored models.

A useful way to keep the terms straight is to separate three events: introduction, activation, and outcome. Evasion is introduced when an attacker manipulates an input presented to a trained model. A backdoor is introduced earlier, through influence over training data or model state; its activation can happen later when a trigger appears. Both can result in a prediction the attacker wants, but the route to that prediction is different.

How the attacks compare

Question Evasion attack Backdoor attack
When is the attack introduced? At test or deployment time, by manipulating an input. Typically during training or model construction, by influencing training data or model state; it is activated later.
What does the attacker change? The sample presented to the model. The model’s learned or retained behavior, so a particular trigger produces an attacker-chosen response.
What activates the behavior? The crafted sample itself. A specific trigger or pattern in an input.
Does the model’s learned state have to change during the attack? No. In an evasion attempt, the learned model state stays unchanged. The model has been compromised or altered to establish the trigger-linked behavior.
What defensive work is central? Robustness to crafted inputs, alongside monitoring model inputs and outputs. Training-data and model integrity, data review, and checks for trigger-linked behavior.

These are distinctions between attack mechanisms, not a claim that the two can never appear in the same incident. A trigger-bearing input can exploit a backdoor at inference time. The activation is an input event; the backdoor is the model compromise that made the trigger effective.

The table also helps separate access from activation. An evasion attempt can target a model at inference without requiring the attacker to alter its training process. A backdoor attack, by contrast, needs some route to influence the training data or model state, depending on the method. Once implanted, though, the attacker may only need to present an input containing the associated trigger to activate it. Seeing an attack happen at deployment therefore does not tell you, by itself, whether the underlying risk was created at deployment or earlier.

What an evasion attack looks like

Suppose an image classifier receives a test image that has been deliberately altered. If the change makes the classifier switch to a prediction selected by the attacker, even though the model was not retrained or modified, that is an evasion example. NIST’s 2025 taxonomy describes adversarial examples as similar to the original sample under certain distance metrics while changing the model’s prediction. The exact notion of similarity depends on the metric; the important point in this comparison is that the attacker manipulates the input rather than implanting a hidden rule in the model.

An adversarial example, in this sense, does not itself change the model’s learned state. It can cause a wrong output for the manipulated sample, but the model has not thereby acquired a persistent trigger-dependent behavior. A separate change to the model or its training process would be needed to establish a backdoor.

Think of evasion as a test-time failure induced by a particular sample. The relevant before-and-after comparison is between the original input and the crafted input: does the model’s prediction change in the attacker’s desired direction? NIST’s formulation notes that adversarial examples can remain similar to the original under selected distance measures while changing the prediction. That similarity does not mean every alteration is imperceptible, nor does the definition in itself prescribe one universal metric. The key distinction here is that the model’s learned state remains unchanged during the evasion attempt.

This matters when reviewing an incident. If one unusual input produces an unexpected output, that alone does not prove evasion: the input may simply be difficult or ambiguous. The evasion label describes an attacker manipulating a test or deployment sample to steer the model’s prediction. Evidence about the input change and the model’s unchanged state is therefore central to distinguishing the mechanism.

What a backdoor attack looks like

Consider a classifier trained on ordinary examples plus a subset of poisoned examples bearing a rare patch and an attacker-selected target label. The intent is for the trained model to respond normally to ordinary inputs but to produce the target response when the patch appears. NIST describes backdoor poisoning using patterns added to poisoned samples and test samples; its TrojAI material describes the resulting trigger-dependent behavior.

The unusual behavior can remain dormant until an input contains the trigger. That is why a model that appears to work on ordinary examples may still have a backdoor: routine inputs do not necessarily activate it. The trigger need not be understood as an ordinary error or an accidental misclassification. It is the condition associated with behavior deliberately established in the model.

Here, the patch-and-label scenario is an explanatory example of the distinction, not evidence about how often such attacks occur or a claim based on independent testing.

The example illustrates two separate sides of the backdoor. During implantation, a model’s training examples or model state are influenced so that a trigger becomes associated with a target behavior. During exploitation, an input containing that trigger is presented to the already-compromised model. The specific trigger and response depend on the attack; the patch is only a clear illustration, not a requirement that every backdoor use a visible patch.

Ordinary accuracy and trigger behavior are different questions. A model can appear to behave normally on ordinary inputs and still exhibit a special response when the trigger is present. Conversely, an unexpected prediction on an ordinary input is not enough to establish that a backdoor exists. The defining feature is the trigger-linked behavior that was established in the model, not simply that the model made a mistake.

Why an inference-time trigger does not make the attack evasion

“Inference time” tells you when the model processes an input; it does not, by itself, identify how the vulnerability was created. A backdoor is generally implanted earlier, during training or model construction, and activated later when the model sees the relevant trigger. The trigger-bearing input is therefore part of the exploitation, but the defining compromise is the altered model behavior.

In an evasion attack, by contrast, the attacker seeks a chosen wrong prediction by modifying the sample presented to a model whose learned state remains unchanged during that attempt. There is no persistent hidden model rule required. This separates two questions that are easy to conflate: When does the model encounter the attack? and What was compromised to make the attack work?

A practical classification sequence is:

  1. Ask what changed. Was a particular test or deployment input manipulated, or is there evidence that training data or model state was altered?
  2. Ask when the behavior was established. A prediction steered by a crafted sample points to an inference-time evasion mechanism. A trigger-specific rule established during training or model construction points to a backdoor.
  3. Ask what activates the response. In evasion, the adversarially modified sample itself is the mechanism. In a backdoor, a trigger or pattern is associated with the compromised model’s attacker-chosen behavior.
  4. Do not classify by timing alone. A backdoor can be exploited through an inference-time input. That timing does not erase the earlier model compromise.

This sequence is a way to organize the evidence, not a substitute for investigating a system. In practice, a suspicious output by itself may not reveal whether an input was crafted, a model was compromised, or an ordinary failure occurred. The definitions identify mechanisms; deciding which one applies requires evidence about the sample and the model’s development and integrity.

How to tell which risk a defense should address

For evasion: focus on crafted inputs and robustness

Because evasion targets predictions through manipulated inputs, defensive work should assess how the model behaves when inputs are adversarially altered, rather than relying only on results for ordinary examples. NIST’s mitigation framing includes robustness to crafted inputs and monitoring inputs and outputs. These are approaches to reducing risk, not guarantees that every evasion attempt will be prevented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an evasion-focused review, the question is whether the deployed model’s predictions remain dependable when it receives manipulated test or deployment samples. Monitoring input and output behavior can help identify suspicious cases, while robustness work addresses the model’s response to crafted inputs. Normal performance on unmanipulated examples alone does not answer that question. Nor does the term “robustness” imply that a single test can prove resistance to every possible adversarial sample.

For backdoors: examine data and model integrity

Backdoor defenses must also address how the model came to have its behavior. Relevant measures include controls over training-data provenance and cleanliness, review of data, protection of model integrity, and evaluation for behavior linked to possible triggers. These checks address the poisoning or model-change path as well as the later trigger-based activation. No single check should be treated as proof that a model is free of backdoors.

These concerns reach beyond the final input-output exchange. Data provenance asks where training data came from and whether its handling can be trusted; cleanliness and review address the possibility that examples were influenced; model integrity addresses whether the model itself has been changed. Trigger-linked evaluation asks whether the model exhibits behavior associated with a possible trigger. Each is a different part of the assurance picture, so passing one kind of review does not automatically settle the others.

For both: match the control to the attack stage

A robust-input evaluation alone does not establish that training data or model state is clean. Conversely, data-provenance controls alone do not establish that a deployed model will resist every crafted test-time input. A security assessment should distinguish the input path from the training and model-construction path, then apply controls and evaluations appropriate to each. NIST cautions broadly that AI attacks do not have a universal, foolproof defense.

This is why treating “AI security” as one undifferentiated checklist can leave gaps. Evasion defenses address the behavior of a model under manipulated inputs at inference. Backdoor defenses also need to account for how the model was built, what data influenced it, whether its integrity was maintained, and whether a trigger-linked response is present. A well-rounded review considers both paths rather than assuming a control aimed at one attack class covers the other.

What the distinction does—and does not—tell you

The labels identify mechanisms; they do not establish how likely an attack is in a particular system, how severe it will be, or whether one class is more prevalent than the other. The NIST taxonomy and related material cited here do not provide a directly comparable prevalence statistic for backdoor attacks versus evasion attacks. A ranking would require a defined population, time period, and measurement method rather than an inference from the definitions.

This discussion concerns backdoors in machine-learning models: trigger-conditioned behavior in a model. It does not use “backdoor” to mean a secret authentication bypass in conventional software. In a real system, classification depends on evidence about what was changed and how the behavior is activated; a suspicious output alone does not establish which mechanism caused it.

It is also important not to infer prevalence from vivid examples. The patch-and-target-label scenario makes the mechanism easy to understand, but it says nothing about how often backdoors occur relative to evasion attacks. A meaningful comparison of frequency would need a defined set of systems, a time period, and a consistent way to count incidents. The NIST material cited here does not supply that direct comparison, so claims that one class is more common would go beyond what these definitions establish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a backdoor attack and an evasion attack?

Evasion manipulates a test-time or deployment-time input to steer an otherwise unchanged model toward an attacker-chosen mistake. A backdoor changes or compromises model behavior so a particular trigger later activates an attacker-chosen response. The key distinction is input manipulation versus trigger-dependent behavior implanted in the model.

Does an adversarial example change the model?

Not in the evasion scenario described here. The adversarial example is a manipulated input that changes the model’s prediction, while the model’s learned state stays unchanged during the attempt. Establishing a backdoor would require a separate influence on training data or model state.

Can a backdoor be triggered at inference time?

Yes. A backdoor may remain dormant until a trigger appears in an input at inference time. Its inference-time activation does not change the fact that the trigger-dependent behavior was generally established earlier, during training or model construction.

Can the same system face both risks?

Yes. The terms describe different mechanisms, so a system could have a model compromised by a backdoor and also receive crafted inputs that exploit weaknesses at inference. A trigger-bearing input can be the means of exploiting a backdoor; the trigger’s use at inference does not turn the original compromise into ordinary evasion.

Does normal performance prove that a model has no backdoor?

No. A backdoor can be dormant on ordinary inputs and activate only when a particular trigger appears. Ordinary performance therefore does not, by itself, rule out trigger-linked behavior. Model and data integrity checks and evaluation for possible trigger-linked behavior address different aspects of that risk, but no single check guarantees a backdoor-free model.

Which defense should be prioritized?

That depends on the threat and the system’s development path. Evasion-focused work emphasizes robustness to crafted inputs and monitoring of inputs and outputs. Backdoor-focused work also addresses training-data provenance and cleanliness, model integrity, data review, and checks for trigger-linked behavior. NIST’s framing treats mitigations as risk-reduction approaches, not foolproof guarantees.

Sources and scope

The definitions and mitigation framing here follow NIST’s Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations, NIST AI 100-2e2025, published March 24, 2025; NIST’s What Is TrojAI; and MITRE’s Adversarial ML 101. NIST’s taxonomy is the basis for the distinction between test-sample manipulation and trigger-dependent backdoor poisoning. These sources support the conceptual comparison, not a prevalence ranking or a claim that any single mitigation eliminates risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an adversarial example change the model?

In an evasion attempt, no: the adversarial example is a manipulated input, while the model’s learned state stays unchanged. A backdoor requires a separate influence on training data or model state.

Can a backdoor be triggered at inference time?

Yes. A trigger may activate the backdoor when the model processes an input at inference time, even though the trigger-dependent behavior was generally established earlier during training or model construction.

Can a system face both backdoor and evasion risks?

Yes. A trigger-bearing input can exploit a backdoor at inference, and a system may also face evasion attacks that manipulate inputs. The backdoor’s activation at inference does not make its original implantation an evasion attack.

Does normal model performance prove there is no backdoor?

No. A backdoor can remain dormant on ordinary inputs and respond only when a particular trigger appears. Data and model integrity checks and evaluation for trigger-linked behavior address this risk, but no single check guarantees a model is backdoor-free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which defenses address each attack?

Evasion defenses emphasize robustness to crafted inputs and monitoring inputs and outputs. Backdoor defenses also address training-data provenance and cleanliness, model integrity, data review, and evaluation for trigger-linked behavior. These measures reduce risk but are not foolproof guarantees.

The Bottom Line

In short: evasion changes the input to fool an unchanged model; a backdoor changes the model so a trigger can activate attacker-chosen behavior later. Because backdoors can be triggered at inference, timing alone is not enough to classify an incident. Consider both the input path and the training/model-integrity path, and do not treat any single defense as a guarantee.
