Apple’s current Windows instructions cover iPhone backups generally; they do not describe a separate process for iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max. The steps below use Apple’s supported device-backup workflow. “Full” does not guarantee a raw copy of every file or app container: Apple describes backing up device information, files, and settings, but does not promise that every item is included.

Back up your iPhone with Apple Devices
Apple’s Windows route is the Apple Devices app. If it is unavailable on your PC, Apple says to use iTunes for Windows instead. The app’s current route uses General; in iTunes, use Summary. Apple’s Windows guide documents connecting by cable, including USB-C, or over Wi-Fi. A new cable is not inherently required; Apple says to use the cable supplied with the device.

- Open Apple Devices on the PC. If you do not have it, follow Apple’s guidance to use iTunes for Windows.
- Connect the iPhone to the PC, or use Wi-Fi if you have set up that connection. If the phone asks, enter its passcode and tap Trust This Computer.
- In Apple Devices, select the iPhone in the sidebar and open General. In iTunes for Windows, select the iPhone and open Summary.
- Choose the option to back up all data to this computer, then select Back Up Now.
- Wait for the process to finish. Apple says the app shows the date and time of the last backup when it is complete.
These steps follow Apple’s Windows backup instructions and its Apple Devices user guide. Apple’s Windows backup support article was published September 18, 2026; the user guide page reviewed does not show a publication date. The instructions apply to Windows devices generally and do not specifically identify Windows 11.

Should you encrypt the local backup?
Enable Encrypt local backup if you want the local backup to preserve Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch. Create a password and store it securely in a place you can access later. Apple says an encrypted backup cannot be used without its password; if you lose it, you cannot recover that backup.
Encryption is an important choice to make while setting up the backup. Apple documents the setting and password warning in its Apple Devices user guide and Windows backup support article.

How to verify and find the backup in Windows
First, check the last-backup date and time shown in Apple Devices or iTunes. In Apple Devices, select Manage Backups to view and manage backup files; its controls can also show a backup in File Explorer.

Apple documents these folder shortcuts and management options in its backup-location and management instructions, published January 19, 2026. Manage Backups can also delete or archive backups. Avoid deleting the only backup you may need to restore from.

- Open Apple Devices on the PC and connect the iPhone.
- Select the iPhone, choose Restore Backup, and select the backup you want by date.
- If prompted, enter the encryption password.
- After the iPhone restarts, keep it connected until it has synced with the computer.
Apple’s restore instructions, published June 29, 2026, describe this local-computer restore path. Apple’s separate note that an already configured iPhone must be erased before restoring an iCloud backup applies to the iCloud process, not these local backup steps.

Windows backup or iCloud?
A Windows backup stores the backup on the computer; iCloud uses Apple’s cloud storage. Your choice depends on where you have storage and how you plan to recover the phone. Neither destination is universally safer or more complete based on Apple’s instructions.
For automatic iCloud backups, Apple says to turn on Back Up This [Device], connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi, and keep its screen locked. Apple may prompt you to buy more iCloud storage if there is not enough room. See Apple’s iCloud backup instructions, published September 24, 2026. Syncing photos or files is separate from creating a device backup.
