Start with the school’s device rules—not a shopping list. A school-issued laptop may cover the main need, and a student who already has a compatible device may need few or no new gadgets. Before buying, check the school or course’s required software, device policy, and whether students receive equipment.
How to choose school tech without buying the wrong device
Match the device to the student’s actual classes, age, workload, and school systems. A laptop is generally the safer fit for keyboard-heavy work or required desktop software. A tablet can suit reading, note-taking, and app-based work if the school’s tools support it; this is a practical inference from device-feature and compatibility guidance, not a universal ranking.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Education advises families to consider durability, splash resistance, weight, school-software compatibility, repairability, and several years of operating-system updates. Its general guidance suggests a screen of at least 10 inches, at least 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM, battery life for a six-hour school day, a keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a webcam. These are New Zealand recommendations to consider, not universal standards or guarantees. Tablet buyers should consider an attachable keyboard.

They specify warranties of two years for tablets and three years for laptops and desktops, and at least 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi, with Wi-Fi 6 recommended. These standards apply to UK institutions, not every family purchase.

Ask the school whether it provides a device, what operating systems and applications are supported, and what support or repair arrangements apply. The U.S. Department of Education’s 2026 edtech guidance suggests asking of any education technology product: “What learning problem does it solve?”
Ten gadgets to assess against the student’s needs
This is a checklist of possibilities, not ten required purchases. Confirm school rules and device compatibility before spending money.
-
School-approved laptop or Chromebook
Prioritize compatibility with class software, keyboard needs, battery, portability, durability, repairability, warranty, and the length of security-update support. Check whether the school already issues one. The New Zealand Ministry of Education says new Chromebooks are supported for 10 years, but verify the update window for the specific device and confirm it meets the school’s requirements. A second-hand device can cost less upfront but may need replacement sooner.

Tablet, if the school’s tools support it
A tablet may fit reading, notes, and app-based work. Before choosing one instead of a laptop, check that required websites, software, file workflows, and assessment tools work on it.

Attachable keyboard for a tablet
If a tablet is the right choice, a keyboard can support longer writing tasks. Check the tablet’s exact model and dimensions before buying an accessory.
-
Protective case or carry bag
Consider protection suited to the student’s commute and daily handling. Match a case to the exact device model; a poor fit can obstruct ports or controls.
-
Screen protector
This is an optional layer of protection. Confirm compatibility with the device’s screen and any touch or stylus use.

Headphones
Check whether the school requires headphones or earbuds, and whether wired or wireless models work with the student’s device and school settings. Requirements vary: St. Thomas Episcopal School in San Antonio, for example, specifies headphones or earbuds in its own requirements. That is not a nationwide rule.

Compatible spare charger
Buy one only if the school or student’s routine calls for it. Verify the connector and power rating for the exact device. Some schools set their own expectations: the cited San Antonio school also asks students to have an additional charger each day.
-
Mouse or home keyboard accessory
These may suit a home study setup or a student’s preferred way of working, but are not universal school essentials. Check whether the device supports the accessory and whether it helps with the student’s tasks or accessibility needs.
-
External storage
Consider it only if school software and privacy rules allow it. Ask whether school-approved cloud storage or another managed option is required before putting schoolwork or student information on a removable drive.

Webcam or headset, if a gap exists
A separate webcam or headset may be useful if the built-in equipment is missing or remote learning requires it. Check the device and course requirements first; many devices already include a webcam and microphone.
Check local rules before buying or sending devices to school
Policies differ by jurisdiction and school. NYC Public Schools’ 2026–27 family checklist advises families to check the school’s device policy, have an internet-connected device available for remote learning, and help the student sign in to their school account for online tools. New York State law bars students from using personal internet-enabled devices such as cell phones on school grounds during the school day; check current local rules rather than assuming a phone is an in-school essential.
UK Department for Education guidance updated 29 June 2026 says schools should be phone-free by default. Laptop and tablet bring-your-own-device schemes are governed by school BYOD and acceptable-use policies. A phone or smartwatch should not be treated as a school essential without checking the applicable policy.
Plan for support, security, and total cost
Compare the cost of buying now with the likely replacement timeline. A lower upfront price on a used device may be offset if it has little support life left. Check the manufacturer’s security-update end date for the exact model, warranty coverage, repair options, and whether the school can support it. A device that cannot run required software or receive security updates can be a poor value even if its purchase price is attractive.
In the United States, the National Retail Federation’s 2026 back-to-school research says electronics account for roughly one-third of total K–12 back-to-school spending and one-quarter of college back-to-school spending. It also reports that 20% of shoppers not buying electronics say those items are provided by the school. These are US shopping findings, not a budget forecast for an individual family or a guide to spending in other countries. The NRF says laptops remain the most popular back-to-school electronics purchase, though fewer shoppers are buying them, and many K–12 schools provide electronics directly to students.
