Most of the time, a rear camera that shows a black screen, won’t open or won’t switch lenses is blocked, glitching or hit by a software fault. It isn’t dead. Work through the checks below in order: remove anything covering the lens, restart, update, then reset the Camera app the way your manufacturer describes. If the built-in app and other camera apps still fail, or the device is physically damaged, stop resetting and get it inspected.

Step-by-step fix
1. Remove obstructions and check for damage
Take off the case, screen or lens film, lens attachment and any magnetic mount, then test again. Apple specifically advises removing cases, films and accessories that could block the camera or put a magnet near it (Apple Support, “If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn’t working,” published February 3, 2025).

Look at the lens cover for cracks, moisture or signs of impact. If you find any, skip ahead to service. Don’t pry the device open.

2. Restart, then test both cameras
Restart the phone or tablet and open the built-in Camera app. Switch to the front camera and back to the rear one. Apple and Google both recommend restarting, and Samsung lists it for Galaxy camera errors. Apple also suggests checking whether one or both cameras fail. A fault on only the rear camera points away from a general software problem.
3. Update and reset the Camera app for your platform
Menu names vary by model and software version, and reset effects differ between brands. Use your own device’s support page rather than applying another brand’s instructions.

iPhone and iPad
- Update iOS or iPadOS to the latest available version.
- Compare the front and rear cameras.
- If the problem remains, arrange Apple service. Apple recommends service for persistent camera or flash problems.
Google Pixel phone or tablet
- Clear the Camera app’s cache (typically under Settings, Apps, Camera, Storage & cache).
- Update the Pixel Camera app and Android.
- Test in Safe Mode. If the camera works there, a downloaded app is probably interfering.
- Try another camera app. Google says that if other camera apps also crash, a hardware issue is likely and repair may be needed.
Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet
- Clear the Camera app’s data (typically under Settings, Apps, Camera, Storage). This resets Camera settings. Samsung says it does not delete your saved photos or videos.
- Restart the device and install any available software updates.
- Where available, run the Camera diagnostic in the Samsung Members app.
4. Decide whether it needs service
Seek manufacturer service if any of these apply:
- The built-in camera and other camera apps still can’t use the rear camera after the steps above.
- The device has visible damage.
- The Samsung Members diagnostic reports a fault.
Samsung says the camera module or internal circuitry may then need inspection. Repeating resets at this point only delays the repair.
