If you need control of the operating system, encoder, or a live-production workflow, compare Azure with other virtual-machine providers such as Amazon EC2, Google Cloud Compute Engine, and Hetzner Cloud Servers. A VM is infrastructure—not a managed channel—and choosing a cloud provider alone does not make a stream resilient.
Choose by workload: managed loop or self-managed encoder
The right Azure VM alternative depends on what you are streaming and how much operations work you want to own. A continuous playlist of prerecorded videos is different from a live production with cameras, audio equipment, or multiple inputs.

Google Cloud Compute Engine
Compute Engine is another general-purpose VM option. Google identifies media streaming and transcoding as workload areas, but that does not determine which machine size or network configuration your stream needs. Validate the encoder workload and estimate the full network and compute bill before committing.
Hetzner Cloud Server
Hetzner provides hosted cloud servers. Its official SLA states 99.9% monthly Cloud Server availability, subject to defined exclusions and a cloud-credit process. That figure concerns the SLA’s defined server availability, not whether your encoder application or YouTube broadcast remains live.
Azure Virtual Machines
Staying with Azure can make sense if your systems already depend on Azure or you need its VM environment. Microsoft Learn says customers remain responsible for configuring, patching, and installing VM software. Azure compute is charged based on VM size and operating system, with storage charged separately; networking and data transfer also need to be included in a workload estimate.

How to estimate the real cost
There is no defensible universal cheapest provider without a defined stream and region. A headline hourly VM rate is not the monthly cost of a continuous YouTube channel. Build an estimate for the actual design and check provider terms before launch.
Cost worksheet
- Region and availability: Choose the region and check that the required VM size is available and within your quota.
- Compute: Price the selected operating system and machine size for the hours you expect it to run. For a continuous stream, model the intended always-on schedule.
- Storage: Include OS and media disks, snapshots or backups, and any extra storage the playlist requires.
- Network: Include public IP or other networking charges and outbound data transfer. Clarify how the provider bills traffic sent to YouTube ingest; audience delivery is generally a separate question because YouTube serves viewers, but check the provider’s current billing rules for your architecture.
- Encoder and recovery: Include paid software or managed-service fees where relevant, monitoring, and any second VM or recovery setup needed to meet your continuity target.
- Service terms: Check SLA scope and exclusions, regional availability, quotas, and any credits or remedies. An infrastructure SLA does not promise end-to-end stream continuity.

Set encoder and network requirements before choosing a VM
YouTube supports streaming by encoder as well as webcam and mobile workflows. Its encoder guidance covers production needs such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware, and multi-camera setups. A VM is suitable only if its compute, encoder, and network path can sustain the specific output you plan to send.

The following are YouTube-published recommended bitrates by codec and output format, not guarantees of VM bandwidth or successful delivery. YouTube’s inspected guidance recommends testing with representative motion and audio, monitoring stream health, and using RTMPS.

Provision upload capacity above the encoded bitrate so the stream has headroom; do not select a VM solely from a nominal network limit. Actual requirements depend on the selected encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and workload. No general VM size recommendation can be made without those details and a representative test.

Keep the stream key and content safe
- Use the stream key from the intended YouTube live-stream setup and treat it as a credential. Do not place it in public logs, screenshots, or shared scripts; rotate it if exposed.
- Use RTMPS where supported, as YouTube recommends, and verify the ingest endpoint and key in the encoder before going live.
- Only stream content you have rights to use. A continuous loop does not exempt music, video, or other material from copyright rules or YouTube policies.
- Review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for reused content before building a channel around repeated recordings. Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
What “always on” requires from a self-managed VM
A cloud VM removes dependence on a home computer and connection, but one VM is still one machine and one application path. Microsoft’s Azure reliability guidance discusses transient faults and zone or region failures; a single zonal VM is not resilient to a zone outage by itself. Microsoft documents higher-availability designs using multiple VMs across availability zones or availability sets, which add cost and operational complexity.
Plan for more than infrastructure availability: the encoder must start after a reboot, reconnect after an ingest interruption, and alert an operator when it cannot recover. Test the actual restart and recovery behavior. Provider availability figures apply to their stated infrastructure and SLA scope, not to the full chain from encoder through YouTube.

Troubleshooting a cloud YouTube stream
The stream will not connect
- Check that the YouTube stream key and ingest settings match the active stream setup; replace an exposed or outdated key.
- Confirm the VM can reach the ingest endpoint and that outbound traffic is allowed by its firewall or network rules.
- Try RTMPS and check YouTube’s live control room for stream health and ingest errors.
The stream is unstable or drops frames
- Compare actual encoder bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check sustained outbound capacity and leave headroom above the encoder bitrate; investigate network throttling or congestion.
- Check CPU or accelerator load and reduce output complexity or resize the VM if encoding cannot keep up. Validate changes with representative motion and audio.
The stream stops after a reboot or disconnect
- Configure the VM to start the encoder automatically after reboot, then test the behavior rather than assuming it works.
- Set up monitoring and alerts for both VM health and encoder/stream status. Define who responds to an alert.
- Decide whether the required recovery target justifies a second instance or a managed service; a single VM does not protect against every host, zone, or application failure.
The video looks different from the source
Confirm the encoder output resolution, frame rate, and codec, then check the settings and live health shown by YouTube. A source file’s properties alone do not establish the delivered live-stream quality.
The stream runs, but the channel or videos raise policy concerns
Check rights for every video and audio track, then review YouTube’s current copyright, live-stream, and reused-content rules. Continuous availability does not make reused material original or grant permission to broadcast it.
