Microsoft’s Azure SQL Database Foundations series is a four-video learning path focused on Azure SQL Database Hyperscale. It moves from getting started to migration and workload optimization, then scaling and performance, and finally AI app patterns using operational data. Each episode has a companion repository for hands-on follow-along, while a separate Developer Guide expands into deployment automation, AI-ready applications, and modern data APIs.
What the Azure SQL Foundations series covers
Microsoft published the series announcement on August 25, 2026. The videos are aimed at developers working through database modernization, migration, scaling, or AI questions around existing SQL workloads. This is a focused path into Azure SQL Database Hyperscale, not a comprehensive introduction to every Azure data service.

Microsoft describes the sequence as taking viewers “from your first Hyperscale database to AI features running against your own operational data.” The four episodes are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Get started with Azure SQL Database Hyperscale: Introduces Hyperscale in the context of AI and analytics workloads built on familiar SQL foundations.
- Migrate and optimize with Azure SQL Database Hyperscale: Covers migration and modernization, with the stated aim of avoiding application rewrites. That is the series’ positioning, not a guarantee that every database or application can migrate without changes.
- Optimize scale and performance with Azure SQL Database Hyperscale: Addresses independent compute and storage scaling, along with tuning for the workload being run.
- Bring AI into your apps with Azure SQL Database Hyperscale: Explores vector search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and large language models (LLMs) with operational data.
Microsoft says each episode includes a companion repository, so viewers can follow along in their own environment. The announcement does not report performance benchmarks or quantified migration outcomes. Read Microsoft’s series announcement and access its linked episodes and repositories.
#1 Best Overall
Is the series useful if you already have a SQL database?
Its outline is relevant to developers who have an existing SQL schema or database and want to learn about a Hyperscale migration, tune a workload, or build AI features around operational data. The migration episode’s stated goal is to avoid application rewrites, but the announcement does not establish that this is possible for every workload. Treat it as a topic the series addresses, not as a migration promise.
If you are looking for a broad survey of Azure data services or a comparison of database products, this series is narrower: all four episodes center on Azure SQL Database Hyperscale.
What comes after the videos: the Developer Guide
Microsoft’s Azure SQL Database Foundations: Developer Guide extends the video path across three areas. The tools and technologies below are examples in the guide’s stated coverage; they are not all required for every project.
- Database deployment and automation: Azure CLI, PowerShell, Bicep, ARM templates, and Terraform.
- AI-ready applications using operational data: Vector search and RAG, with topics involving Azure OpenAI, Semantic Kernel, LangChain, Azure AI Search, and Microsoft Fabric.
- Modern data APIs: Data API Builder, SQL MCP Server, JSON support, and recent T-SQL enhancements.
How to use the series for your learning goal
- New to Hyperscale: Start with episode one, then use its repository to follow along.
- Planning a migration: Focus on episode two, and assess its migration guidance against the requirements of your own application.
- Working on performance or scale: Start with episode three, which addresses compute and storage scaling and workload-specific tuning.
- Adding AI to an application: Watch episode four for vector search, RAG, and LLM patterns, then consult the Developer Guide for related tools and approaches.
- Building deployment workflows or APIs: Use the Developer Guide’s automation and data API sections, which go beyond the four-video sequence.
