For a YouTube stream that needs to stay live around the clock, use regular Azure VM capacity for the required baseline—not a single Spot VM. Azure can reclaim Spot capacity when it needs it, and Spot VMs have no SLA or high-availability guarantee. A Spot VM can make sense as optional capacity only if an interruption is acceptable and you have tested recovery.
A regular VM avoids Spot-specific eviction, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted end-to-end stream: encoder, network, YouTube ingestion and other parts of the setup can still fail.

Microsoft says Spot allocation depends on available capacity, which varies by VM size, region, time and other factors. Azure may evict Spot VMs when capacity is needed for pay-as-you-go workloads. See Microsoft’s overview of Azure Spot VMs.

Setting maxPrice: -1 caps the Spot price at the standard VM price and prevents eviction for pricing reasons. It does not protect the VM from eviction when Azure needs the capacity. After an eviction, capacity may not be available to restart it. This setting changes price-related eviction behavior; it does not turn Spot into reserved or guaranteed capacity.

Azure offers eviction policies that affect what happens to the VM and its disks. With Deallocate, Azure retains the VM and disks, and storage charges continue; the VM still may not be restartable until capacity is available. With Delete, Azure removes the VM and its underlying disks on eviction. Choose a policy with your recovery and data-persistence needs in mind, and verify the current behavior in the Azure Spot VM documentation.
Why the 30-second notice is not a continuity plan
Azure can deliver a Preempt notification through Scheduled Events up to 30 seconds before eviction, but delivery is best effort. Treat it as a chance to react—not a guaranteed shutdown window or enough time to preserve a live broadcast. Microsoft’s architecture guidance warns that immediate evictions are possible, so recovery should not depend only on an in-VM notice.

If you are designing failover, account for detection, alternate compute capacity, encoder startup and reconnection, plus how the YouTube stream and broadcast are handled. A VM price setting is not failover. Do not assume a restart or a second encoder will preserve the same YouTube broadcast unless you have verified that behavior in your own configuration. For the capacity principle, Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “Use as many regular VMs as you need to meet your uptime requirements.” See Microsoft Azure Architecture Center’s Spot eviction guidance.
When Spot can still be useful
- Interruption is acceptable: You can tolerate the stream going offline while capacity is reclaimed and later restored.
- It is supplemental: Regular capacity covers the required workload; Spot is not the only host for a stream that must stay live.
- Recovery is tested: You have tested eviction, unavailable replacement capacity, encoder restart and YouTube reconnection rather than relying on assumptions.
- The economics work for your configuration: Compare current prices for your region, VM SKU and OS. Spot discounts vary, and
maxPrice: -1can still expose you to capacity eviction.
Microsoft describes Spot as potentially “up to 90% cheaper” than regular pay-as-you-go VMs, but that is not a guaranteed saving for a particular stream. The discount depends on demand, SKU, region and OS; check current regional pricing before deciding. The exact VM, region, operating system, encoder workload and redundancy design are not specified here, so no specific cost or suitability estimate can be made.

Keep YouTube encoder health separate from Azure capacity risk
A correctly configured encoder helps with delivery, but it cannot prevent Azure from reclaiming a Spot VM. YouTube recommends RTMPS and settings matched to the connection and encoder. Its published H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; it also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Azure VM or network can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Match resolution, frame rate and bitrate to both the encoder and the available upload connection.
- Test with representative audio and motion before relying on the setup for a continuous stream.
- Monitor YouTube stream health while live. The Live Streaming API describes
videoIngestionStarvedas a condition where YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. See the LiveStreams API documentation.
Monitoring ingestion helps identify a delivery problem, but it does not by itself establish whether Azure has evicted the VM. Correlate stream-health information with Azure VM state and events when diagnosing an interruption.
