Juvenile Mexican axolotls consistently selected the larger of two passable openings—even when they could not see either one. A 2026 study in Animal Behaviour found that darkness reduced how often the animals crossed a divider, but it did not erase their preference for the wider doorway. The result points to a practical spatial ability used for moving through gaps, not evidence that axolotls count or do human-like mathematics.
What the axolotl experiment found
The study tested whether axolotls could distinguish between openings of different sizes. Each animal faced a divider containing two circular holes. Both holes were large enough for the axolotl to pass through, so the choice was between a relatively larger and smaller route rather than between an accessible and blocked route.

Across the trials, the animals repeatedly chose the larger opening. The researchers described this as a preference for larger openings for crossing—a behavior that could make movement through confined spaces easier or safer.

Can axolotls see in the dark?
This experiment does not show that axolotls can see in complete darkness. Instead, it shows that they can retain the larger-opening preference when visual information is unavailable. In the dark condition, the animals made fewer crossings overall, indicating lower activity. Yet among the crossings they did make, their preference for the larger opening remained as strong as it was in daylight.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters. Darkness changed how active the axolotls were, but it did not remove the size-discrimination behavior. The findings therefore support a nonvisual way of assessing the available routes.
How might axolotls navigate without vision?
The lateral line is a leading hypothesis
Axolotls possess a lateral-line system: rows of mechanoreceptive organs called neuromasts on the head and trunk. These sensors detect water movement and small pressure changes. Such information could help an axolotl sense how water flows around an opening or how much space is available near its body.

Researchers Oxána Bánszegi of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Péter Szenczi of the National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz said it was initially surprising that the animals could distinguish openings in complete darkness. They noted that vision is not always essential for tasks when it is limited by an animal’s biology or environment.

Other information may also contribute
Water currents, pressure patterns, touch, smell or short-range body contact could potentially provide additional clues. The published result establishes that the axolotls made the choice without light; it does not identify which combination of senses produced it.
Do axolotls understand size or quantity?
The safest interpretation is that axolotls discriminate between spatially different passageways and choose the one that offers more room. That is useful spatial-quantity discrimination: the animals respond to a difference in available opening size.

It is not evidence that they represent numbers, compare abstract quantities or perform arithmetic. A choice between two doorways is also different from a task in which an animal selects, for example, a larger number of objects. The study’s task was navigation through gaps, so its ecological meaning is likely tied to movement rather than counting.
Why the controls strengthen the result
A side preference could otherwise make an animal appear to favor one opening simply because it was always on the same side. Researchers reversed the divider’s orientation midway through testing, changing the side on which each size appeared. The repeated preference for the larger hole after that reversal argues against a simple left-right bias.

The sample was still modest: 24 juveniles were tested and 22 contributed enough activity for analysis. The result should therefore be read as a controlled demonstration in this group, not as a measured prevalence for every axolotl population or a claim that all ages and conditions will produce identical behavior.
What the finding says about axolotl intelligence
Calling the behavior “clever” is reasonable in the everyday sense that the animals solved a problem under difficult sensory conditions. Scientific claims about intelligence need more care. Bánszegi and Szenczi emphasized that intelligence should be evaluated in light of an animal’s ecological needs and said the study shows there is still much to learn about axolotl behavior.
The strongest conclusion is narrower and more useful: axolotls can select a larger passable opening, and they can do so even when darkness removes vision. Their nervous system appears capable of extracting spatial information that helps with navigation, while the precise sensory pathway remains unresolved.
