AX1800 is a Wi-Fi 6 speed-class label, not a promise of 1.8 Gbps internet or of that speed on one device. On a representative TP-Link Archer AX1800, the advertised maximum wireless rates are 1,201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Added together, they total 1,775 Mbps, rounded to the AX1800 class. Those figures describe theoretical wireless signaling rates across two bands, not measured real-world throughput.
What does AX1800 mean on a router?
“AX” identifies Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, in TP-Link’s product documentation. “1800” is a rounded class label based on the router’s advertised maximum rates across its Wi-Fi bands. For the US TP-Link Archer AX1800, the listed rates are 1,201 Mbps at 5 GHz and 574 Mbps at 2.4 GHz, for a nominal combined total of 1,775 Mbps. TP-Link’s US product page and its 2025 US v5.6 datasheet document those specifications.

The class label is useful for a broad comparison, but it does not fully describe the router. It does not tell you the speed a particular phone or computer will achieve, how many devices will perform well at once, the quality of coverage in your home, or which wired ports and mesh features are included.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs AX1800 the same as 1.8 Gbps internet?
No. The “1800” figure is a rounded sum of advertised maximum Wi-Fi rates across two bands. It is not a broadband speed rating and should not be read as the rate available to one wireless device. A client connects using its own supported Wi-Fi capabilities and conditions; the router’s internet connection, network traffic, distance, obstacles, and interference also affect actual performance.
#1 Best Overall

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
TP-Link’s Archer AX1800 (US) v5.6 datasheet warns that “Actual wireless data throughput, wireless coverage and number of connected devices are not guaranteed and will vary as a result of network conditions, client limitations, and environmental factors, including building materials, obstacles, volume and density of traffic, and client location.” The datasheet’s numbers are specifications, not independent performance-test results.
What speed can an AX1800 router actually deliver?
There is no single real-world speed that follows from the AX1800 label. Results depend on the router model and revision, the client device’s Wi-Fi hardware and settings, the connection between the router and modem, broadband service, competing traffic, and the layout and materials of the building. The advertised band rates set a theoretical wireless ceiling for the cited configuration; they do not establish a typical or guaranteed download speed.

- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
For the specific US Archer AX1800 covered by TP-Link’s 2025 v5.6 datasheet, the hardware list includes one Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, and TP-Link states that the Gigabit WAN port supports up to 1 Gbps internet access. That wired link can bound internet speed even when the Wi-Fi class label sums to more than 1 Gbps. The port details apply to that documented model revision, not every AX1800 router.

AX1800 is a speed class, not a complete feature checklist. One representative router may offer features another does not, or may use different features across regions, hardware revisions, and firmware. TP-Link’s Archer documentation illustrates why the exact model matters:
Rank #3
- Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6: Wi-Fi 6 technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous generation
- Ports: The cited US v5.6 datasheet lists one Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports.
- Security and operating modes: TP-Link’s product materials list WPA3 and router/access-point modes for the representative Archer AX1800. Confirm support on the exact unit and firmware you are considering.
- Mesh compatibility: TP-Link’s US product page lists OneMesh, while its later US v5.6 datasheet lists EasyMesh. That difference makes it important to check the exact hardware revision and the manufacturer’s compatibility information before planning a mesh setup. TP-Link also has a separate Australian Archer AX1800 V2 page advertising OneMesh; regional and revision-specific claims should not be generalized.
Other product materials may list dual-band operation, four streams, or OFDMA, but those details should be verified for the precise model rather than assumed from AX1800 alone. ASUS’s RT-AX1800HP product page is another example of an AX1800-class router; ASUS likewise cautions that stated speeds are based on IEEE 802.11ac/ax specifications and that actual performance can be affected by network, service-provider, interface, and other factors.

- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Wi-Fi bands and rates: Check the listed rate for each band and confirm the Wi-Fi standards supported. The combined class number alone can conceal differences in band rates.
- WAN and LAN ports: Check port count and speed against your broadband plan and wired devices. A Gigabit port and a faster-than-Gigabit internet service, for example, may not be a match.
- Security and guest access: Verify the security options and guest-network features you need, including whether they are available on the relevant hardware and firmware.
- Operating modes: Confirm whether the router supports access-point mode or any other mode required by your network setup.
- Mesh system: Check the exact mesh technology, compatible devices, and supported hardware revisions. Do not assume that two products with similar names or the same AX1800 class will work together.
- Your devices and home layout: A router cannot give an older or more limited client capabilities it does not support. Placement, walls, obstacles, traffic, and client location also affect coverage and performance; a class label or antenna count is not a reliable coverage guarantee.
Manufacturer specifications are useful for identifying advertised capabilities, but they are not a substitute for a measured result in your home. TP-Link and ASUS both qualify their speed claims by noting that real performance depends on the client, network, service, and environment.
