Neither AWS Strands nor LangGraph is a universal winner for multi-agent routing across multiple RAG sources. AWS Prescriptive Guidance says both are strong for autonomous multi-agent workflows, while its selection guidance suggests LangGraph may suit more complex workflows with sophisticated state management. Strands is the more AWS-native fit; that does not prevent LangGraph from working with AWS services. Choose based on how you need to control routes and state, then test both against the same representative queries.
How the workflow models differ
Both frameworks can support multi-agent systems and routing, but they present different ways to organize the work. That distinction matters when a request may need retrieval from several corpora, specialist agents, or a defined review and fallback path.

LangGraph: make control flow explicit in a graph
LangGraph represents agents or workflow steps as graph nodes, with edges defining connections and control flow. Agents can communicate through shared graph state. LangChain’s multi-agent overview describes patterns including agents working through a shared scratchpad, a supervisor routing work to specialist agents, and hierarchical teams. This graph-and-state model gives a team an explicit place to define and inspect transitions; check the current LangGraph API before adopting implementation details from an overview.
Strands: choose among several multi-agent patterns
The Strands Agents selection guide lists graph, swarm, and agents-as-tools patterns. It also lists session management and snapshots, along with MCP client support, streaming, guardrails and interventions, and OpenTelemetry-native observability. Those are capabilities described by the framework maintainer, so verify their current availability and implementation details against the version you plan to use.

What AWS’s comparison says—and does not say
AWS Prescriptive Guidance provides qualitative ratings, not a performance benchmark. Its comparison rates Strands strongest for AWS integration, strong for autonomous multi-agent support, and strongest for autonomous workflow complexity. For LangChain/LangGraph, it rates AWS integration adequate, multi-agent support strong, and workflow complexity strongest.
| Criterion | Strands Agents | LangChain/LangGraph |
|---|---|---|
| AWS integration, per AWS Prescriptive Guidance | Strongest | Adequate |
| Autonomous multi-agent support, per AWS Prescriptive Guidance | Strong | Strong |
| Autonomous workflow complexity, per AWS Prescriptive Guidance | Strongest | Strongest |
These are AWS’s framework-fit judgments, not independent measurements. They do not establish which option is faster, cheaper, more accurate, or more reliable for multi-RAG. AWS’s own selection guidance says, “More complex autonomous workflows with sophisticated state management might favor the advanced state machine capabilities of LangGraph.” The same guidance identifies model preference, multimodal needs, workflow complexity, deployment, and monitoring as factors in framework fit.

Choose by the needs of your routing and retrieval design
Control flow: fixed routes or model-directed decisions?
Map which decisions should be deterministic and explicitly authored, and which can be delegated to a model. LangGraph’s graph framing makes nodes, transitions, and shared state central to the design. Strands also offers a graph pattern, alongside swarm and agents-as-tools patterns. Compare how clearly each prototype expresses your actual routing rules, including when to ask a specialist, combine results, or stop.

State: what must survive a handoff or retry?
List the state that must persist between retrieval stages, agent handoffs, retries, and user turns. AWS specifically points to sophisticated state management as a possible reason to favor LangGraph. Strands documents session management and snapshots; the Strands guide contrasts this with LangGraph checkpointers for memory. The useful comparison is not just whether state exists, but whether your workflow can save, resume, inspect, and update the state it actually needs.

Retrieval composition: decide where each RAG source belongs
For every corpus or RAG system, decide whether retrieval should be a tool called by an agent, a graph node, a sub-agent, or a deterministic stage. Then test how the implementation handles routing to the right source, merging results, preserving citations, retrying a failed retrieval, and responding when a source is unavailable. The cited framework materials describe workflow patterns and integrations, but do not provide comparative results for multi-RAG implementations.
AWS fit and model choice
AWS describes Strands as strongly integrated with AWS. Separately, an AWS tutorial demonstrates LangGraph working with Amazon Bedrock, so Strands’ native fit is not the same as exclusive compatibility. For a real deployment, confirm that the models and services you intend to use are currently available in your target AWS region; the tutorial’s named model versions and region are historical example details, not current availability guidance.

Operations and team fit
Assess observability, human review, error handling, fallbacks, deployment, and governance against the workflow’s duration and risk. AWS’s LangGraph and Bedrock tutorial calls out coordination, state management, communication, output consolidation, guardrails, monitoring, and fallback mechanisms as design concerns for multi-agent systems. Strands’ guide lists OpenTelemetry-native observability; it lists LangSmith for LangGraph tracing and observability. Also account for whether your team is more comfortable authoring explicit graphs or using abstractions it already knows. Framework capability tables are starting points; these libraries evolve, so check their documentation when selecting a version.

- Define representative queries. Include requests that should use one source, multiple sources, or no retrieval, plus cases with ambiguous intent or a failed source.
- Implement equivalent routes. Give each prototype the same retrieval tools, specialist responsibilities, output requirements, and limits on tool use.
- Check route and retrieval behavior. Record whether the correct sources were selected, whether relevant material was covered, and whether results and citations were merged appropriately.
- Exercise state and recovery. Test handoffs, retries, failed retrieval, and any state that must persist across steps or user turns.
- Measure end-to-end outcomes. Compare answer quality, latency, token and service cost, recovery behavior, and how easily the team can trace and debug a run.
This is an evaluation method, not a reported head-to-head test. The reviewed sources do not establish comparative multi-RAG latency, cost, answer quality, or reliability.
