MediaPackage is not a direct YouTube Live encoder. YouTube’s documented setup sends a live encoder’s output to YouTube’s own server URL with a YouTube stream key; MediaPackage is an AWS origin-packaging service whose endpoint serves packaged content to downstream players or CDNs. For a YouTube-only 24/7 channel, configure a continuously running encoder to publish to YouTube. Add MediaPackage only if you also need its packaging and origin-delivery workflow.
Choose the architecture before creating AWS resources
There are three practical routes for keeping a YouTube stream live. For an India-based channel, the right choice depends on whether you want to operate the encoder yourself and whether you need AWS-origin delivery for destinations beyond YouTube.

| Order | Option | Use it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | StreamNeo | You want a YouTube-only stream of uploaded video without keeping an encoder computer running. | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It is the simplest option here for avoiding a home computer, encoder uptime and home-connection dependency; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. |
| 2 | Encoder directly to YouTube | YouTube is the destination and you can maintain an encoder, source and contribution connection. | The encoder publishes to YouTube’s Live server URL using the stream key from Live Control Room. This is the documented YouTube ingest workflow; MediaPackage is not required for it. |
| 3 | Encoder plus MediaPackage origin | You also need packaged AWS-origin output for other players or CDNs. | The encoder sends an input to a MediaPackage channel; downstream players or CDNs request the origin endpoint. YouTube still needs its own encoder-to-YouTube ingest leg. |
AWS’s MediaLive documentation recommends MediaPackage v2 for new MediaLive workflows. That does not make a MediaPackage playback endpoint a YouTube ingest URL. If you plan to send one source to both MediaPackage and YouTube, check that your selected encoder supports the required simultaneous outputs and validate each output independently; the cited AWS and YouTube setup guidance does not establish a universal dual-output configuration.

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned start time.
- Decide whether this is genuinely continuous. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, source, and whether a backup encoder is needed. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance and the encoder’s supported settings to choose compatible output values; the available documentation here does not specify one universal bitrate or resolution for every channel and encoder.
- Plan archive and recording separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that behavior to preserve a single event longer than 12 hours in full; set up a separate recording or archive plan if you need a complete copy.
- Check rights and channel policies. Use video and audio you have permission to stream, and ensure the broadcast complies with YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies. Repeatedly looping material is not, by itself, evidence that you have the necessary rights or that a channel will qualify for monetization. Review the current YouTube policies for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
Set up a YouTube-only encoder stream
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and complete any channel verification or enablement prompts. Allow up to 24 hours if this is the channel’s first live stream.
- Create or select the broadcast in Live Control Room. Retrieve the current YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast or stream configuration.
- Protect the stream key. Enter it only in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat it like a password: do not put it in screenshots, logs, public configuration examples or repositories. If exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Set the destination to YouTube’s server URL and paste the matching stream key. Select a video and audio configuration supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s current guidance. If the encoder offers a keyframe interval setting, use the interval required by YouTube’s current encoder instructions rather than assuming a value from another platform.
- Provide bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity with 20% room above the bitrate being streamed. If a backup contribution is active, account for primary plus backup bitrate as YouTube advises. Measure the actual upload path at the encoder location, not just the connection’s advertised download speed.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed, inspect audio and video, then start the broadcast according to the selected stream’s controls. Check watch-page access from a separate viewer session.
- Test resilience before announcing 24/7 availability. During a planned test window, verify recovery after source, encoder and network interruption. YouTube recommends advance setup, preview checks, backup-encoder failover testing and continuous monitoring of audio/video quality.
Add MediaPackage only for an AWS origin-delivery need
If you need MediaPackage to package and serve the content to other players or CDNs, build that as an additional workflow. It is not a substitute for the YouTube ingest destination.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Check service and region availability first. Choose the intended AWS region and verify availability for MediaPackage v2, MediaLive if used, and the delivery or CDN services in the design. AWS General Reference lists a MediaPackage v1 live endpoint in Mumbai (
ap-south-1); that listing does not prove that every MediaPackage v2 feature or companion service is available there. - Choose the MediaPackage v2 input type before creating the channel. AWS documents HLS and CMAF input. HLS input requires TS streams and plain HTTP PUT requests; CMAF uses the DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol. MediaPackage v2’s input type cannot be changed after channel creation, so match the encoder’s output group and protocol to the intended input before provisioning.
- Create the origin resources. Follow AWS’s MediaPackage v2 getting-started flow to create a channel group, channel and origin endpoint. The channel receives encoder input; players or CDNs consume the endpoint output.
- Configure the encoder-to-AWS leg. Match the configured output to the chosen MediaPackage input. For new MediaLive workflows, AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF ingest output group. This is an AWS delivery recommendation, not a YouTube destination setting.
- Configure the YouTube leg separately. Set an encoder output to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. If the same encoder is expected to feed both MediaPackage and YouTube, confirm simultaneous-output support and resource capacity with that encoder’s current documentation; do not assume a MediaPackage endpoint can be pasted into YouTube’s server URL field.
- Test the whole chain. Confirm that the AWS endpoint serves the expected packaged output to its intended player or CDN, and separately confirm YouTube preview and watch-page playback. Test interruptions and recovery in each leg.
Understand the India region, runtime and cost limits
- Region: Mumbai’s presence in the cited AWS endpoint reference is specifically a MediaPackage v1 live-endpoint listing. Confirm current v2 and companion-service availability component by component before committing to an India-region design.
- MediaPackage time-shift quotas: AWS lists a maximum time-shifted manifest length of 24 hours and a maximum content age for time-shifted viewing of 336 hours (14 days). These are MediaPackage quotas, not YouTube live-event duration or archive guarantees.
- YouTube archive behavior: The under-12-hour automatic archive statement is separate from AWS time-shift quotas. Plan recording for a longer continuous broadcast independently.
- AWS spend: There is no defensible single “India 24/7” cost from the information available here. Model the actual region, encoder runtime, MediaPackage configuration and endpoints, bitrate, audience and delivery path, storage or recording, and redundancy using current AWS service pricing. A YouTube-only encoder workflow and an encoder-plus-origin design have different components to cost.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Wrong server URL or stream key, live streaming is not enabled, or the encoder output is not compatible. | Recheck the destination values in Live Control Room and the encoder, confirm channel eligibility, and inspect the encoder’s connection status. Replace an exposed key. |
| Feed appears unstable or drops | Insufficient upload headroom, a failing source or encoder, or a contribution-network interruption. | Measure the encoder location’s upload path, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bitrate headroom, and test the source, network and backup path separately. |
| MediaPackage rejects input | The encoder’s protocol or output format does not match the channel’s selected ingest type. | Verify whether the channel expects HLS/TS over plain HTTP PUT or CMAF via DASH-IF Live Media Ingest, and confirm the encoder output group. If the wrong input type was selected at channel creation, it cannot be changed; create a channel with the intended type. |
| MediaPackage works but YouTube is offline | The origin endpoint is serving downstream clients, but there is no separately configured encoder output reaching YouTube. | Check the YouTube destination in the encoder and its Live Control Room preview; do not use the MediaPackage playback endpoint as YouTube’s ingest URL. |
| Stream is live but the full long broadcast is not archived | The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive behavior. | Use a separately planned recording or archive process for a broadcast longer than 12 hours. |
| Expected AWS resource is unavailable in Mumbai | The cited MediaPackage v1 regional endpoint listing was treated as proof of complete v2 workflow availability. | Verify each required service and feature in the intended region before deployment, then revise the region or design if a component is unavailable. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids maintaining an encoder computer and home connection: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos only; it does not broadcast from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. Your computer can be off, the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes one always-on stream, pooled storage of 10 GB per slot across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. Every plan has the same product; only the billing period changes. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
For Indian creators, UPI and cards are supported; card checkout is available worldwide. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
