AWS Elemental MediaLive YouTube Stream Is Black: Input and Encoder Checks

A black MediaLive stream can originate at the source, input, output encoder, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback. Trace the first black stage before changing settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your AWS Elemental MediaLive stream looks black on YouTube, find the first stage where the picture disappears: the source, MediaLive input, MediaLive output, YouTube Live Control Room preview, or only a viewer’s playback. That boundary—and whether audio continues or the problem began after an input interruption—narrows the fault without needlessly changing bitrate or replacing equipment.

Trace the picture through the stream path

Follow the signal in order: upstream source or encoder → MediaLive input and channel → MediaLive output → YouTube ingest and preview → viewer playback. AWS’s live workflow describes these as successive stages; the useful diagnostic is the first one where the image is black.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Check the source. Confirm that the camera, playout system, or upstream encoder is producing video. Inspect its local monitor or preview if available. Note whether the source is black there, whether audio continues, and whether the image is black continuously or intermittently.
  2. Check MediaLive. Inspect the selected input, channel status, and available input or output monitoring. Establish whether MediaLive is receiving usable video and whether its output contains video.
  3. Check YouTube. Inspect the event in YouTube Live Control Room. If its preview is black, continue investigating the source-to-ingest path. If the preview is correct but a particular viewer sees black, record the event URL, device, app or browser, time, and stream-health state; that points to a separate playback symptom.

Record whether the fault occurs at startup or after an interruption. These observations help distinguish input detection, input loss, encoder configuration, and viewer playback. They do not establish a specific cause without the stream’s configuration and telemetry.

Check the MediaLive input first

Confirm the intended source is present

Verify that the channel is using the intended live input and that the source is present and sending video. When a channel starts, MediaLive probes its input. AWS identifies an absent input, mismatched input settings, or a source that exceeds channel specifications as possible reasons input detection can fail and startup can fail. See the AWS MediaLive channel startup guidance.

Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.

Match the input type to the actual codecs

Check both the configured MediaLive input type and the codecs actually carried by the source. MediaLive codec support depends on input type, so do not assume YouTube is responsible before confirming that the source format is supported for the selected input. Consult AWS’s MediaLive supported codecs by input type.

Consider input-loss replacement behavior

If the channel is running but the output turns black, check whether MediaLive has lost usable input and what replacement settings are configured. AWS documents a default sequence of repeating the last valid frame for 1,000 milliseconds, encoding black frames for 1,000 milliseconds, then encoding a black slate indefinitely. This documented default can explain black output after input loss, but it should not be assumed for a channel with customized replacement settings. See AWS’s input-loss behavior documentation.

Verify the output encoder against YouTube’s ingest guidance

Compare the actual MediaLive output configuration with YouTube’s current live encoder requirements. YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS for live ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR bitrate encoding. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose bitrate using YouTube’s table for the output codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a figure copied from a different configuration.

YouTube encoder setting Guidance How to use it
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS Confirm the configured destination uses a supported live ingest protocol.
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 Compare the actual MediaLive output codec with the destination configuration.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Ensure the output frame rate is appropriate for the source and event.
Bitrate mode CBR Check that the output encoder is configured for constant bitrate.
Keyframe interval Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds Check the configured interval rather than changing bitrate to compensate for a mismatch.
H.264 at 1080p30 14 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate Use this only when the output is H.264 at 1080p30.
H.264 at 1080p60 17 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate Use this only when the output is H.264 at 1080p60.

The figures and codec guidance in the table are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026. The bitrate figures are recommendations, not evidence that bitrate caused a black image. The bitrate for other combinations should be taken from the matching YouTube table row.

Check that MediaLive is actually emitting video

  • Confirm the output has an active video encoder; a valid audio output alone will not produce a picture.
  • Check that the output is not configured to emit only audio or a slate.
  • Compare the selected output resolution and frame rate with the detected source.
  • Verify the destination and stream key in the output configuration. Do not expose the key in logs, screenshots, or support messages.

AWS’s live workflow guidance describes the chain from upstream source through MediaLive input and channel to downstream output. Its example uses an encoding profile matched to source resolution; it is a useful principle when checking whether the configured output fits the actual source.

Use YouTube’s preview and health messages to locate the receiver boundary

Before a public event, test with representative movement and audio, then check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and messages while delivering the stream. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Follow YouTube’s live encoder guidance and live stream troubleshooting guidance.

  • Source preview is already black: investigate the source or upstream encoder before changing YouTube settings.
  • Source is correct, but MediaLive input or channel is not: check input presence, settings, supported codecs, and input-loss behavior.
  • MediaLive receives video, but its output is black: inspect the output’s active video encoder, output configuration, and any slate or replacement behavior.
  • MediaLive output is correct, but YouTube preview is black: verify the ingest destination, stream key, and YouTube’s stream health and messages.
  • YouTube preview is correct, but one viewer sees black: gather the viewer’s device and playback details before treating it as an ingest fault. The cited guidance does not establish a particular black-screen error code or guarantee that every playback symptom appears in stream health.

Common symptoms and practical next checks

Symptom What it points to Next check
Channel fails during startup MediaLive may not detect a usable input. Confirm the source is present, input settings match it, and its specifications fit the channel.
Picture turns black after a source interruption Input loss or replacement behavior may be involved. Check input status and the channel’s configured input-loss replacement settings; do not assume the documented default if they were customized.
Audio reaches YouTube but the picture is black The output may lack an active video encoder or usable video. Check MediaLive input video, output video encoder, and whether the output is set to audio-only or a slate.
MediaLive output looks correct but YouTube preview is black The fault may be at ingest or destination configuration. Verify protocol, destination, stream key, and Live Control Room messages.
Only one viewer reports a black picture The symptom may be downstream of YouTube ingest. Capture the event URL, device, app or browser, time, and stream-health state to separate playback from ingest.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded video that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a fix for a MediaLive production incident: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing; start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
