Choose MediaLive if you want AWS to manage the live-encoding service; choose FFmpeg on EC2 if you want to control the encoder process and its compute environment yourself. Both can send a stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Neither option can be declared universally cheaper from the available pricing information: the answer depends on your stream profile, runtime, AWS region, redundancy, and operating effort.
What differs between MediaLive and FFmpeg on EC2?
| Decision point | AWS Elemental MediaLive | FFmpeg on EC2 |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates the encoder | AWS provides a managed cloud live-encoding service with automated provisioning. AWS Elemental MediaLive. | You operate the FFmpeg process and configure the EC2 compute environment. See the FFmpeg documentation. |
| Recovery and availability | AWS describes multi-Availability-Zone high-availability capabilities and handling of issues without disrupting live channels. This is a service capability, not a guarantee for every configuration. | Process supervision, restart behavior, monitoring, and failover are your responsibility unless you design and operate them. A single EC2 process does not itself establish a recovery guarantee. |
| YouTube destination | Configure the YouTube Live server URL and stream key as the encoder destination. | Configure FFmpeg to send its output to the YouTube-provided server URL and stream key. |
| Cost basis | Charges depend on channel state and configured inputs and outputs, including their characteristics; some resources can remain chargeable while idle or paused. | Estimate the chosen EC2 instance and runtime, plus relevant network charges and the operating work required by your design. |
YouTube lists AWS Elemental MediaLive among its verified software encoders. Its encoder setup guide explains that you enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder.

MediaLive: managed encoding, AWS resource billing
MediaLive is the more managed route: AWS provides the encoding service and describes automated provisioning and multi-Availability-Zone capabilities. It is a reasonable fit when reducing responsibility for encoder infrastructure and its availability design matters more than managing a process directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Managed does not mean cost-free while unused. AWS explains that an idle channel can incur charges for its inputs and outputs. On a running channel, configured outputs can remain chargeable while paused, and attached inputs can be charged even when they are not active or receiving content. Input pricing depends on characteristics such as input type, codec, bitrate, and resolution; output pricing depends on characteristics including codec and frame rate. Channel class also affects pricing treatment. Consult AWS MediaLive pricing documentation and model the resource states your workflow will actually use.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
FFmpeg on EC2: direct control, direct operational responsibility
With FFmpeg on an EC2 instance, you choose and configure the compute capacity and run the encoding process yourself. That gives you control over the software and process, but you must determine whether the instance can sustain the required real-time workload and build the surrounding reliability measures.
There is no defensible instance size or cost estimate without knowing the input format, target codec, resolution, frame rate, any hardware acceleration requirement, region, and runtime. A cost estimate should include the chosen instance for the hours it runs, network transfer that applies to the architecture, redundancy if used, and the time needed to maintain and monitor the service.

Decide the stream profile before estimating cost or capacity
Write down the intended output before choosing a service or instance. Resolution and frame rate affect encoding capacity and, for MediaLive, pricing characteristics; codec and bitrate also affect input or output pricing as applicable. You also need to decide how many outputs you need, how long the channel will run, and whether your design includes redundancy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Source format and whether you will transcode it.
- Target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Number and type of inputs and outputs.
- Expected run duration and how long resources may remain provisioned while idle.
- Region, channel class, redundancy, and recovery expectations.
Until these assumptions are specified, a comparison based on a single hourly price or a claim that one route is cheaper would be misleading.

Set up the YouTube destination
- Enable live streaming on the channel if needed. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in public logs, shared screenshots, or source code.
- Configure the encoder destination. In MediaLive, configure the channel and output profile for the intended YouTube stream, then use the YouTube destination details in the applicable output configuration. With FFmpeg, configure the output to send to YouTube’s supplied destination using the FFmpeg options appropriate to your source and target.
- Start the encoder and verify the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the selected stream profile and that YouTube is receiving the output before relying on the channel for a continuous broadcast.
The precise MediaLive channel and output-protocol settings depend on the workflow; no single tested configuration is established here. For FFmpeg command-line options, consult the official FFmpeg manual rather than copying a command without adapting it to the input, encoding, and destination.
Build recovery into an EC2 loop
A process that starts successfully is not necessarily a reliable 24/7 service. For a self-managed FFmpeg setup, plan how the process will be monitored, restarted after failure, and alerted on if it stops delivering. Decide how the stream key is stored and who can access it. If you require failover beyond restarting a process, design and test that separately; the reliability of an EC2-based loop depends on what you build.

For MediaLive, review the channel’s actual configuration and the AWS availability characteristics applicable to it. AWS describes multi-Availability-Zone capabilities, but that does not establish identical protection for every channel configuration or remove the need to understand the service’s resource and billing states.

A useful comparison includes more than encoder compute. MediaLive’s costs change with configured inputs and outputs, their characteristics, channel class, and whether resources are idle, running, or paused. The EC2 alternative depends on instance selection, uptime, region, network transfer, any redundancy, and the work required to keep the process healthy. AWS positions MediaLive as pay-as-you-use, but that is not a workload-specific comparison with an EC2 loop.

- Define one identical stream profile and run duration for both options.
- For MediaLive, estimate the relevant inputs, outputs, channel class, and resource-state charges, including idle periods.
- For EC2, select a suitable instance for the actual encoding workload and account for its runtime, relevant networking, and recovery architecture.
- Include the operational effort and reliability design needed to meet the same service expectation.
No like-for-like price winner or universal savings figure is established for these architectures. Use current AWS pricing for your region and configuration rather than extrapolating from an example that may include additional packaging or distribution components.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating MediaLive or an EC2 encoder loop: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on. Your uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live production service. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
