In the AWS console, open MediaLive → Channels, select the channel, choose Stop, and verify that its state reaches IDLE. A stopped channel may still incur idle charges, and connected resources such as push inputs, MediaConnect flows, or a multiplex can continue to cost money.
Stop the MediaLive channel and verify its state
- In the AWS console, select the account and Region where the channel was created.
- Open MediaLive → Channels and find the channel. Check its state in the channel list or details.
- If the state is RUNNING, select the channel and choose Stop. You can also stop it with the MediaLive StopChannel API.
- Check the state again until it reaches IDLE. STOPPING means the stop transition is still in progress. AWS documents channel states and monitoring in its MediaLive console monitoring guide.
YouTube ending its broadcast and MediaLive stopping are separate events. AWS explains that when live streaming stops, the MediaLive channel keeps running and incurs costs. Its documented stop procedure requires stopping the channel; do not assume that YouTube sends MediaLive an automatic stop instruction. AWS described an input-loss automation workflow in a 2023 blog post, but that is not a reason to assume a channel in your account stopped automatically.

What the channel state means for billing

A stopped channel is therefore not necessarily free. AWS describes billing by resource state and input type in its MediaLive pricing guide. For the configured channel, total costs can include input processing, output processing, enabled add-ons, idle resources, and applicable data transfer. The exact amount depends on Region and configuration; there is no universal post-stream charge or reliable India-wide estimate.
Check resources that may keep costing money
Attached push inputs
After the channel reaches IDLE, identify its inputs. AWS may charge for an attached push input while idle, unlike an idle pull input. If you no longer need a push input, consider deleting it, but first confirm you will not need it for a later stream. AWS’s pricing guidance explains idle resource charges.

MediaConnect flows and outputs
Stopping MediaLive does not automatically stop associated MediaConnect outputs. An output may continue trying to send data and can create additional flow charges. Inspect the related flow and stop unused outputs or flows as appropriate. See AWS’s guidance on distributing content from MediaConnect to MediaLive.
Multiplexes
If the channel belongs to a multiplex, check the multiplex separately. Stopping the channel does not stop the multiplex, and multiplex charges can continue until the multiplex itself is stopped. Follow AWS’s instructions for stopping activity in a multiplex if it is no longer in use.

Other invoice items
Do not assume that MediaPackage, CloudFront, storage, data transfer, or another service caused a charge. Check the actual billing line items and investigate a service only if it appears in your account.

- In Billing and Cost Management, review service and usage line items for the relevant date range and Region.
- Compare the line items with the MediaLive channel state, its input type, attached outputs, and any multiplex or MediaConnect resources.
- Use the channel’s Region and exact configuration when checking rates. AWS’s MediaLive Pricing page describes charge components, but a displayed rate alone cannot identify or calculate your account’s bill.
- If the line items do not make the cause clear, use your account’s billing records or contact AWS Support. The actual account, Region, resources, and invoice period are needed to identify a specific charge.
What is different for an AWS India account?
The stop procedure is the same. AWS says an account with an India tax address is billed by AWS India, and AWS India invoices in INR; the tax address determines the billing seller and applicable taxes. See AWS India FAQs. The MediaLive rate still depends on the service Region and channel configuration. Check your own invoice and account details rather than converting a foreign displayed rate into an assumed INR amount.

Delete a channel only after it is idle
A MediaLive channel must be idle before it can be deleted. Deletion is not a substitute for checking connected resources: it does not automatically clean up every input, MediaConnect flow, output, or multiplex. See AWS’s guide to editing and deleting a channel.
