It also supports transparency, animation, HDR, and wide color gamut. Support and results vary by browser, decoder, image, and encoding settings, so use a fallback and test the features your site actually needs.
What is AVIF?
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It stores AV1-coded image data in a HEIF container. The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) maintains the format; its specification page lists version 1.2.0. AOMedia’s AVIF overview links to the specification.

AVIF files commonly use the .avif extension and the image/avif MIME type. The format supports lossy and lossless compression. Depending on how a file is encoded and what its decoder supports, it can also carry transparency, multi-image or animated content, HDR, wide color gamut, monochrome or multichannel imagery, and auxiliary data such as depth maps. The v1.2.0 specification also defines layered images. These are format capabilities, not a guarantee that every encoder, browser, or image viewer supports every feature. See the AVIF v1.2.0 specification and MDN’s image format guide.
Is AVIF better than JPEG?
AVIF can be a better delivery choice when reducing image transfer size matters and your encoding and delivery pipeline can serve it reliably. At comparable visual quality, it can produce smaller files. Mozilla Developer Network (MDN), publication year not stated, gives around 50% smaller than JPEG as an example for lossy AVIF. Treat that as an illustrative comparison, not a promise for each image: results depend on the source, encoder, settings, and the quality target being compared.

- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
JPEG remains useful when broad compatibility or an existing workflow is more important than the potential size reduction. Compare actual output at similar visual quality; nominal quality settings from different encoders are not directly comparable. AVIF’s transparency, animation, HDR, and wide-color support may also matter, but confirm that your entire pipeline and target decoders handle the particular feature.
How much smaller are AVIF files?
There is no universal reduction percentage. MDN’s approximate “around 50% smaller than JPEG” example applies to lossy AVIF at visually similar compression levels, not every image or setting. Image complexity, encoder implementation, and the chosen quality target all affect the output. The reviewed sources do not establish a directly comparable current benchmark for AVIF encoding or decoding cost across devices, so do not assume a smaller file guarantees faster processing everywhere.
For a meaningful comparison, encode representative images from your own site in AVIF and the fallback formats, compare them at similar perceived quality, and check the resulting file sizes and appearance on the devices that matter to your audience.

Which browsers support AVIF?
MDN’s compatibility summary lists these minimum browser versions for AVIF support:
| Browser | Support starting point listed by MDN |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 85 |
| Edge | 121 |
| Opera | 71 |
| Firefox | 93 for still images; 113 for animated AVIF |
| Safari | 16.1 |
These are browser-version starting points from MDN’s accessed documentation, not assurances that all operating systems, devices, or AVIF features behave identically. Check current compatibility information and test the actual browsers, devices, and features your audience uses. In particular, do not infer animation support from still-image support.
How do I use AVIF images on my website?
For a page that should work across a range of browsers, put AVIF first in a <picture> element and provide other formats plus a final image source. The browser selects a source it understands. This example offers AVIF, WebP, and JPEG:

Use an accurate, useful alt value for the image’s purpose. Ensure your server sends AVIF files with the image/avif content type. The same approach can be adapted for responsive sources with width or density descriptors; keep each source’s variants aligned so the browser can choose an appropriate image. MDN names WebP, JPEG, and PNG as fallback options.
Choosing formats and delivery
Choose based on the images and experience you actually serve:
- Compare file size at a similar visual quality target, rather than comparing encoder quality numbers.
- Check browser and device support for the site’s audience, including the specific AVIF features used.
- Consider whether transparency, animation, HDR, or wide color gamut is necessary.
- Account for the encoding and delivery pipeline, fallback handling, and any progressive-display behavior the experience requires.
If you manage many images, an image optimization or CDN service that converts and negotiates formats can automate delivery; verify its output and fallback behavior rather than assuming every service handles every AVIF feature the same way.

Progressive display caveat
MDN notes that AVIF does not support progressive rendering in typical use and that the full file must be downloaded before it can be displayed. Separately, the v1.2.0 specification describes progressive decoding using layered images. That format capability does not establish broad browser or encoder support for a JPEG-style progressive display workflow. If progressive appearance matters, test the exact encoding and browsers involved.

For a resilient site intended to reach a broad browser and device mix, yes: provide a WebP, JPEG, or PNG fallback through <picture> or an equivalent content-negotiation or image-delivery setup. AVIF support starts at different versions across browsers, and feature support can vary even where still-image decoding exists. A fallback gives the browser another source if it cannot use the AVIF option.

Common implementation problems
- The AVIF image does not appear: Check the file URL, server response, and
Content-Type. Serve AVIF asimage/avif, confirm the file is valid, and retain a fallback source. - A still image works but an animation does not: Still and animated AVIF support do not have the same browser-version starting point. Check animation support separately; MDN lists Firefox 113 for animated AVIF, later than its still-image support at Firefox 93.
- Colors or transparency look different: AVIF supports advanced color and transparency, but the result depends on encoding and decoder implementation. Verify the source’s color settings and test the intended browsers and devices.
- The file is not smaller: AVIF is not guaranteed to beat every JPEG or WebP file. Re-encode representative sources at a comparable visual quality target and check the actual output.
- The image appears only after download: MDN describes full-file download before display in typical AVIF use. Layered progressive decoding exists in the v1.2.0 specification, but broad browser support for that workflow is not established; test the exact pipeline if progressive display is required.
