Automatic vs. Manual App Updates: Which Should You Use?

Automatic updates are the easiest default for most apps. Learn when manual updates make sense, how Wi-Fi-only options help, and what Android, Windows, and Apple controls actually cover.

For most people, automatic app updates are the better default. They reduce the chance that you leave useful features, bug fixes, or security improvements waiting because you forgot to check. Choose manual updates when a specific app is essential to your work, you need to control when its version changes, or you have to manage downloads on a limited connection—and make a habit of installing important fixes promptly.

The right choice depends on the device and app: a store’s update setting may not cover every app, and update timing is not always immediate. A Wi-Fi-only setting can offer a practical compromise where the platform supports it.

Automatic and manual updates: what changes?

With automatic updates, the app store or updater installs eligible updates without requiring you to start each one. That reduces the routine work of checking, but does not necessarily mean an update installs as soon as its developer releases it: platform rules, device conditions, and rollout timing can affect when it arrives.

With manual updates, you choose when to check for and install updates. That gives you more control over timing and version changes, but also makes you responsible for remembering to check. There is no comparative study in the cited platform guidance that quantifies how much either approach changes security outcomes or how often updates disrupt workflows.

Which option fits your situation?

Priority Practical choice Trade-off
Routine maintenance with minimal effort Automatic updates You have less control over exactly when an update arrives.
Keeping mobile-data use in check Wi-Fi-only automatic updates, where available Updates may wait until the device can use Wi-Fi.
Stability for a critical app or workflow Manual updates for that app, if the platform allows it You must check regularly and install important fixes promptly.
Control over every version change Manual updates, or an administrator-managed version policy where available More control also means more upkeep; not every consumer platform offers version pinning.

Automatic updates are not a guarantee that every app on a device is covered. For example, some Windows desktop apps use a publisher’s own updater rather than Microsoft Store. Check the app itself if it does not appear to update through its store.

How automatic updates work on common platforms

Android and Google Play

Google Play lets users choose automatic updates over any network, over Wi-Fi only, or not automatically. Wi-Fi-only is a useful middle ground if you want routine updates without using mobile data for them. See Google Play’s instructions for updating Android apps for the current consumer controls.

Google’s Android Enterprise documentation describes default managed update behavior that generally waits for the device to be on Wi-Fi, charging, idle, and not using the app being updated. Google says Play typically checks for updates once a day, and an update can take up to 24 hours to enter the queue. These are documented platform behaviors, not a promise that every consumer device or app updates on that schedule. Details are in Google’s Android Management API guidance on app auto-update policy.

For managed Android devices, administrators can also choose among Default, High priority, and Postpone policies. High priority updates as soon as possible after Google Play has reviewed the developer’s release, though rollout size can still mean up to 24 hours; installing an update may close an app that is in use. Postpone pauses automatic updating for an initial 90 days, after which the latest version installs under default behavior when its conditions are met. Users can still update manually during that period. These are enterprise-management options, not general consumer Play Store settings. See Google’s policy documentation.

Windows 10 and 11

Microsoft Store can install app updates automatically. To check its setting, open Microsoft Store → Profile → Store Settings → App updates. Microsoft notes that some publishers manage updates inside their own apps, so the Store setting may not cover all installed desktop software. See Microsoft’s instructions for automatic app updates.

Apple platforms

Apple’s consumer support guidance recommends automatic updates to receive current features, security updates, and bug fixes, while also describing manual configuration. The exact consumer settings can vary by device and software version; use Apple’s current instructions for updating apps rather than relying on steps for a different version.

Apple’s separate documentation for managed apps on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS describes administrator controls to turn automatic updating on or off, follow store settings, or pin an app version. It says managed apps configured for automatic updates are checked periodically, typically every 24 hours. These are controls for managed environments, not universal consumer App Store behavior. See Apple’s deployment guide to managing app updates.

A simple update policy to follow

  1. Leave automatic updates on for most apps. This is the lower-maintenance default for routine features, fixes, and security improvements.
  2. Choose Wi-Fi-only updates if mobile data is a concern. On Android, Google Play explicitly offers this option; check the corresponding store or device controls on other platforms.
  3. Make exceptions selectively. If a particular app is business-critical or a version change could interrupt a workflow, use manual updates for that app if possible rather than disabling updates everywhere.
  4. Set a reminder to review manual updates. Check on a regular schedule that you can keep, and install important fixes promptly. Manual control without a checking habit can leave updates unapplied.
  5. Check outside the store when needed. On Windows, some publishers update apps themselves. Look in the app’s settings or updater if the store does not manage it.

What automatic updates do not guarantee

  • Immediate installation: Stores can check on a schedule, queue updates, or wait for device conditions and rollout processes.
  • Coverage of every app: Some apps use their own update mechanism instead of the device’s main store.
  • That an update will or will not cause problems: The cited official guidance does not quantify update-related breakage. Manual updating offers a chance to defer a change; it does not establish that updates routinely disrupt apps.
  • Identical controls on personal and managed devices: Administrator policies for managed Android or Apple devices should not be mistaken for settings available to every consumer.
