In Microsoft Word, apply Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles, insert the TOC from References > Table of Contents, and update the field after edits. Google Docs uses the same heading-based idea, while websites build TOCs from HTML headings and anchor links.
What an automatic table of contents does
A TOC lists a document’s sections in their hierarchy. In a paginated Word document it can include page numbers; in digital documents its entries can link to the corresponding heading. The generator reads structural heading information, not simply bold text, a larger font, or extra spacing.

“Automatic” does not necessarily mean real-time. Word and Google Docs normally require an explicit update or refresh after headings, pagination, or layout change.
The essential rule: use heading styles
Before inserting a TOC, assign heading levels that match the document’s structure:

- Heading 1: main chapters or sections.
- Heading 2: subsections within a Heading 1.
- Heading 3: lower-level subsections.
Do not simulate headings with formatting alone. A heading’s appearance is visual; its assigned style or outline level is what makes it eligible for a TOC. Keep the hierarchy logical rather than jumping from Heading 1 directly to Heading 3 without a reason. Numbering such as 1, 1.1, and 1.1.1 is separate from the heading level.
How to create an automatic TOC in Microsoft Word
These steps apply to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021 on Windows and macOS; labels can vary slightly by platform. Microsoft’s current instructions are available in its Word table of contents guide.
- Select a section heading, then choose Home > Styles > Heading 1, Heading 2, or the appropriate level. Repeat for every heading intended for the TOC.
- Click where the TOC should appear, commonly after a title page or other front matter.
- Choose References > Table of Contents.
- Select one of the automatic table styles. Word inserts entries from the document’s heading structure.
If a heading is absent, it is usually still formatted as Normal text, the TOC is limited to fewer levels, or the field has not been updated.

Update the TOC after editing
- Right-click inside the TOC.
- Choose Update Field or Update Table of Contents.
- Choose Update page numbers only when headings and hierarchy are unchanged. Choose Update entire table after adding, deleting, renaming, reordering, or re-leveling headings.
Update the entire table when uncertain. Refresh fields before printing or exporting to PDF, because pagination can change after layout edits.
Word for the web
Word for the web supports inserting and updating a TOC through its References controls. Advanced desktop customization may not be available or may use different labels, so open the document in desktop Word when you need detailed style, level, or leader control.
Customize levels, fonts, leaders, and page numbers
For more control, choose References > Table of Contents > Custom Table of Contents. Depending on the edition, options include:

- How many heading levels appear.
- Whether page numbers are shown and right-aligned.
- Tab leaders, such as dotted lines.
- Indentation for nested levels.
- Fonts and formatting through the TOC styles.
- Which custom styles map to TOC levels.
- Clickable entries in the digital document.
Modify the underlying heading style or TOC style rather than formatting individual generated lines. Direct edits to generated entries can disappear at the next update. A custom style must be mapped to a TOC level; changing its font does not automatically make it a heading.

Google Docs generates linked entries from title and heading styles. Its documented workflow is described at Google’s table of contents help page.
- Select each section heading and choose Format > Paragraph styles > Heading 1–6, then select Apply.
- Place the cursor where the TOC belongs.
- Choose Insert > Page elements > Table of contents.
- Select a display style.
- After changing headings, click the TOC’s Refresh button.
Google Docs TOCs are primarily navigation links rather than Word-style print-layout fields. You can change the displayed heading selection, text styles, and indents, but Google states that TOC formatting cannot be changed in pageless format.

Why headings or page numbers are wrong in Word
Missing headings
- The text is bold or large but still uses Normal text.
- A custom style is not assigned a TOC level.
- The TOC has not been updated after the heading was added.
- The selected TOC displays fewer levels than the missing heading.
- The heading is inside a text box, shape, table, or imported content area that Word does not include as expected.
Select the heading, apply the correct built-in style, and update the entire table. For a custom style, map it to a TOC level in the custom TOC settings.
Wrong page numbers
Common causes include updating text without page numbers, changing layout after the last update, section breaks, columns, landscape pages, or exporting before fields were refreshed. Use Update entire table, review breaks and pagination, then inspect the exported PDF rather than relying only on the editing view.
Wrong nesting
Reapply Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 where needed. Check the TOC’s level limit and custom mappings. Manual numbering does not repair an incorrect structural hierarchy.

The TOC will not update
Word’s Manual Table of Contents is placeholder text and cannot update from document headings, as Microsoft explains in its support documentation. Confirm that an automatic option was inserted, click directly inside the field, and use the update command. If the field is locked, damaged, or came from a problematic conversion, save a copy, correct the styles, delete the TOC, and insert a new automatic one.
Formatting disappears
This usually means individual generated entries were formatted instead of the TOC styles. Set durable formatting in the corresponding style definitions.
Duplicate or unwanted entries
Remove heading styles from decorative labels, captions, navigation text, and sidebar content. In custom TOC settings, limit the heading range or exclude unwanted styles.

Automatic TOCs on websites and WordPress
A web TOC normally scans semantic <h1> through <h6> elements, gives each heading a unique ID, and renders a nested list of anchor links. CSS and JavaScript may add sticky positioning, collapse controls, smooth scrolling, active-section highlighting, or back-to-top links.
On WordPress, plugins such as Easy Table of Contents and CM Table of Contents parse headings and can insert TOCs into posts, pages, or custom post types. Selection, exclusions, placement, and advanced features depend on the plugin and its configuration. A plugin is useful when many pages need consistent automatic navigation; it is unnecessary for a single document or a site that already has a native TOC system.
Web failure points
- Duplicate IDs or repeated heading text create ambiguous destinations.
- Page builders may output unexpected heading markup.
- Navigation, widgets, accordions, or sidebars may be scanned unintentionally.
- Headings inserted dynamically may appear after the TOC is generated.
- International characters can produce unreliable or duplicate slugs.
- A sticky header can cover the destination heading.
- JavaScript-dependent TOCs may fail when scripts are blocked or delayed.
Accessibility and mobile checks
- Use semantic heading elements and give the TOC a clear accessible label.
- Make every link and expand/collapse control keyboard reachable, with visible focus.
- Do not rely only on color to show the active section.
- Test narrow screens and assistive technologies.
- Keep the hierarchy understandable when levels are collapsed.
The existence of a TOC does not prove that a plugin, theme, or custom script is accessible; inspect the generated markup and interactions.
Which method should you choose?

Use Word’s native feature first for Word documents and Google Docs’ native feature for collaborative documents. Consider paid software or plugins only when their workflow solves a specific publishing or layout requirement; basic TOC creation usually needs no add-on.
