Automatic Read Receipts: Definition, How They Work, and What They Don’t Prove

An automatic read receipt is a software notice that a message was opened or displayed. It shows a software event, not that anyone read or understood it.

An automatic read receipt is a software-generated notice sent back to a sender when a message is treated as opened, displayed, or read. The word “automatic” matters: no one types a reply or taps a confirmation. The recipient’s software, or the app itself, decides that a qualifying event happened and reports it. Exactly what counts as that event, and whether the recipient can switch the behaviour off, depends on the product.

What “automatic” means in email versus messaging apps

The term covers two related but different situations.

In email: the client answers a request automatically

Email read receipts start with a sender asking for one. Twake Mail describes a read receipt as an email notification carrying the date and time the message was opened. Its “Always request read receipts with outgoing messages” setting adds that request to every new outgoing message. The request is only half the process: the recipient’s mail client has to respond, and it may not. Twake’s documentation says: “Recipients may choose not to send a read receipt, depending on their email client settings.” (Twake Support, Preferences)

The receipt becomes “automatic” when the recipient’s client is set to answer without asking.

Power Failure Detector with Text Message and Email Alerts. Sends SMS Power Outage Alarms and Restoration Alerts to Two Phones.
  • The original power outage alert system: This device, built by Bell Labs engineers to protect their homes, notifies of power outages.
  • Security away from home: You will never again have to ask, "Is my power out?" or "Is there a power outage in my area?"
  • Immediate detection: You will be alerted of a power failure in your home or business within seconds of the event. You will receive separate alerts for power outages and power restoration.
  • WiFi-enabled: Connect the MySpool Power Failure Detector to your home WiFi to begin receiving text messages, emails, or push notifications during power failures and power restoration.
  • Multiple phone numbers and email addresses: Add 2 phone numbers and up to 5 email addresses per device for seamless notifications to multiple people—keep everyone who needs to be in the know!

In messaging apps: the status is generated by opening or displaying

In chat products, the receipt is often not tied to a formal request. Patent application WO2026076118A1 describes examples where an automatic receipt is sent when a recipient opens a chat, and the sender then sees a “Read” label, a check mark, or a cleared unread indicator. The application also distinguishes this display-based status from a separate, deliberate acknowledgment by the recipient. Note that this is an example from a patent disclosure, not a description of how every current messaging app behaves. (WO2026076118A1 on Google Patents)

Sender request and recipient response are separate actions

With email, two independent decisions are involved:

Risinglink WiFi Power Outage Alarm Detector, Power Failure & Restoration Alerts with SMS Text, Email & Audible Alarm
  • ENGINEERED IN THE USA EASY SETUP : Engineered in the USA for reliability and supported by a dedicated US-based team. No hubs, apps, subscriptions, or monthly fees required. Risinglink delivers direct SMS text, email, and audible alerts without relying on third-party smart-home platforms. Works with 2.4GHz WiFi networks (not compatible with 5GHz-only networks).
  • INSTANT POWER OUTAGE ALERTS: Detects power failures in as little as 3 seconds and immediately sends alerts. Even brief power interruptions are detected, helping you identify abnormal power conditions and take preventive action before they happen again. You will also receive an alert when power is restored.
  • TRUE SMS TEXT MESSAGE ALERTS: Receive direct SMS text alerts, not just app push notifications that can be missed if apps are logged out or notifications are disabled. Supports up to 2 phone numbers and 4 email addresses, so multiple people can receive outage alerts at the same time.
  • OPTIMIZED TEXT ALERTS: We believe in timely alerts. Unlike competitors who impose intervals or monthly caps on direct text alerts, Risinglink ensures you receive every text alert promptly. If your outlet experiences multiple trips in a short period, other systems might only send the initial text alerts, potentially delaying or missing the most critical last power outage alert. With Risinglink, there are no such hidden limitations, ensuring you stay fully informed.
  • LOCAL AUDIBLE ALARM + LONG BACKUP BATTERY: An integrated 85 dB audible alarm sounds immediately during power outages, even without Wi-Fi, providing an additional layer of protection. The alarm can be disabled during setup if preferred. The pre-installed backup battery is designed to last over 5 years under typical usage, ensuring reliable monitoring.
  • Sender side: whether to attach a receipt request to the message, individually or by default for all outgoing mail.
  • Recipient side: whether the client sends nothing, asks first, or replies on its own.

The Mulberry Reference Guide v4 documents all three recipient choices: “Always Send Read Receipt,” “Never Send Read Receipt,” and “Prompt to Send Read Receipt.” Of the first it says: “Always Send Read Receipt – an automatic read receipt will always be sent whenever you read a message that contains a read receipt request.” (Mulberry Reference Guide v4)

Recipient setting (Mulberry v4) What happens when a message with a receipt request is read
Always Send Read Receipt A receipt is sent automatically
Never Send Read Receipt No receipt is sent
Prompt to Send Read Receipt The recipient is asked whether to send one

These are the options in that particular client and version. Don’t assume other mail programs, including Gmail or Outlook, offer the same controls or labels without checking their own current documentation.

Read receipts are not the same as tracking pixels

People often lump these together, and they differ. A tracking pixel is remote content embedded in a message that can notify the sender when it loads, as a secondary reference from the Computer Language Company describes. (Computer Language Company) A receipt is a reply generated by the mail client in response to a request. One depends on loading remote content; the other depends on the client’s receipt behaviour. Remote content can be blocked, and a receipt only reflects what the software chooses to report, so neither is a dependable sign that a person read the message.

What a receipt does and does not prove

A receipt records a software event: opened, displayed, or marked read. It doesn’t show that anyone read carefully, understood, or agreed. The patent application states this directly in paragraph [0020]: “However, such read receipts only indicate that the messages were displayed on the recipient’s screen, and do not actually indicate whether the recipient has read and understood the sent messages.”

Practical consequences:

  • A missing receipt doesn’t mean the message is unread; the recipient’s client may never send one.
  • A received receipt doesn’t mean the message was understood, only that the software reported an event.
  • If you need real confirmation, ask for an explicit reply.

How to compare read-receipt behaviour in any product

When you check a specific app or mail client, four questions capture the differences:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Can the sender request receipts, and can that be the default?
  2. Can the recipient always send, never send, or be prompted?
  3. What event triggers the status: opening, displaying, or marking as read?
  4. Is the status a response to a request, or a separate affirmative acknowledgment?

The sources available here illustrate these differences but don’t support a current side-by-side comparison of specific products, so confirm details in each vendor’s own help pages.
