Automatic emergency braking (AEB) detects a likely collision and automatically applies the vehicle’s service brakes to try to avoid impact or reduce its severity. Some systems also add braking when a driver has already pressed the brake pedal but not hard enough. AEB is a driver-assistance feature, not self-driving technology: the driver must continue to pay attention and control the vehicle.
What is automatic emergency braking?
NHTSA defines AEB as a system that detects an imminent collision with vehicles, objects, or road users in or near a vehicle’s path and automatically controls the service brakes to avoid or mitigate the collision. In plain terms, it can brake when the driver has not responded to a detected danger, or strengthen braking when the driver’s response is insufficient. It is intended to help prevent a crash or lessen its impact, not to guarantee that a collision will be avoided. NHTSA’s final rule sets out the regulatory definition.

How does automatic emergency braking work?
AEB uses information from the vehicle’s hazard-detection systems to identify a collision risk, then intervenes through the service brakes. The precise sensors, activation thresholds, and operating limits vary by vehicle; NHTSA’s general guidance does not specify one sensor arrangement for every system. For details about a particular vehicle, consult its owner’s manual.

Dynamic brake support
Dynamic brake support (DBS) supplements the driver’s braking if the driver has pressed the brake but the system determines that more braking is needed.
Pedestrian automatic emergency braking
Pedestrian AEB uses forward sensor information to detect a pedestrian in the vehicle’s path and can brake if the driver has not acted to avoid a crash. Its function follows the same basic idea as vehicle-focused AEB, but it addresses a different road user.

How AEB differs from a collision warning
A forward collision warning alerts the driver to a possible collision; it does not, by itself, apply the brakes. AEB takes the additional step of automatically controlling the brakes. A vehicle may have a warning function, an automatic braking function, or both, so check its equipment information and owner’s manual rather than assuming that a warning means braking will follow. NHTSA distinguishes warning systems from automatic braking.

No. NHTSA classifies AEB as a momentary driver-assistance technology at Level 0. It can intervene briefly in response to a detected collision risk, but it does not take over the driving task. The driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and operating the vehicle.

- Product Material: The ABS wheel speed sensor is made of durable plastic and metal materials, ensuring that it can operate stably in harsh automotive environments, and has good durability and anti-deformation ability, to protect your driving safety.
- Detect Wheel Speed: This product ABS wheel speed sensor generates electrical signals by sensing the rotation of the wheel ring, and transmits these signals to the ABS control unit to achieve the normal operation of the ABS system, and assists the ABS system to adjust the braking force according to the real-time speed of the wheel.
- Prevent Wheel Lock: This ABS sensor cooperates with the ABS system to ensure that the wheel will not lock during emergency braking. When the wheel speed drops sharply and is about to reach the locking state, this product will quickly transmit this information to the ECU, and the ECU will adjust the brake pressure to avoid wheel lock, thereby improving braking stability and safety.
- Improve Braking Performance: By precisely controlling the brake pressure of the wheel, the ABS sensor designed for this product can help the ABS system achieve the best braking effect. In emergency braking, this product can assist the ABS system to keep the wheel rolling on the edge of locking, effectively shorten the braking distance, and maintain the stability and directional controllability of the vehicle.
- Product Compatibility: You will receive 1 ABS wheel speed sensor, the product size is 6.5mm/0.26", specially tailored for Mercedes-Benz 2049052905. Before purchasing, please make sure that your model matches the product description to avoid being unable to install or use it after purchase.
What the U.S. AEB rule requires
NHTSA finalized Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 127 in April 2024. It applies to nearly all new U.S. light vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or less, with AEB—including pedestrian AEB—to become standard on covered new vehicles by September 2029. These are requirements for covered new vehicles on that timeline, not proof that every vehicle currently on the road has AEB or meets the standard.
- Lead-vehicle stopping: the rule specifies stopping performance up to 62 mph.
- Automatic braking at higher speeds: the system must automatically brake for an imminent lead-vehicle collision at speeds up to 90 mph.
- Pedestrian detection: the rule requires detection in daylight and darkness, with braking up to 45 mph.
The speed figures describe the rule’s performance requirements, not a guarantee that a vehicle will stop in every real-world situation. NHTSA projected that the standard would save at least 360 lives and prevent at least 24,000 injuries each year; these are agency estimates associated with the rule, not observed annual outcomes. See NHTSA’s announcement of the final rule.

How AEB systems are tested
SAE International’s J3087_202504 recommended practice, revised April 14, 2025, covers vehicle-level testing as a vehicle approaches a stopped, slower, or decelerating lead vehicle in its forward path. The tester selects conditions such as speed and deceleration for the intended test; the practice does not establish one universal scenario or threshold for every AEB system. See the SAE J3087_202504 scope.
