Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Automated cross-browser testing means running the same meaningful checks against a chosen set of browsers and environments—not every possible browser/device combination. A practical starting point is a Playwright project matrix for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, expanded with branded browsers, representative device profiles, or real target devices when your users and product risks justify them.
Choose a browser matrix based on users and risk
There is no universal browser matrix that fits every product. Start with evidence about the browsers, operating systems, and devices your users rely on, then add environments for critical journeys, browser-specific features, and known compatibility risks.
- Identify the target browsers and operating systems from your product’s audience and support commitments.
- Prioritize the journeys whose failure would matter most, such as sign-in, checkout, or a core workflow.
- Add coverage for features with known browser differences, such as media codecs, input behavior, or rendering-sensitive layouts.
- Use a small baseline first; expand it when user data, incidents, or feature requirements point to a gap.
Keep the matrix explicit and review it as your audience, supported browser versions, and tooling change. The goal is defensible coverage, not exhaustive combinations.
Run a repeatable Playwright baseline
Playwright projects let one test suite run under different browser configurations. A baseline can cover Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, with branded Chrome or Edge channels added if those specific browsers are requirements. Playwright’s supported browser binaries and device profiles vary by release, so keep the package and installed browsers aligned. See the Playwright browser documentation and test projects guide.

Install Playwright and its browsers
For a new Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its browser binaries:
npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install
On Linux CI environments, use npx playwright install --with-deps when the runner also needs the browser system dependencies. Commit the lockfile so CI and developer machines resolve the same package versions.
Define the project matrix
Create playwright.config.ts with named projects. This example runs the same tests in the three main Playwright engines:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
projects: [
{ name: 'chromium', use: { browserName: 'chromium' } },
{ name: 'firefox', use: { browserName: 'firefox' } },
{ name: 'webkit', use: { browserName: 'webkit' } },
],
reporter: [['html', { open: 'never' }]],
});
Run all projects with npx playwright test. To target one project, use npx playwright test --project=firefox. The project name appears in results, which helps pinpoint the environment behind a failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Add branded Chrome or Edge only when needed
Playwright’s Chromium engine is not the same thing as validating a particular branded Chrome or Edge installation. If your support requirement names those channels, define them explicitly and install the corresponding browser channel as described in the browser installation documentation.

projects: [
{ name: 'chrome', use: { browserName: 'chromium', channel: 'chrome' } },
{ name: 'edge', use: { browserName: 'chromium', channel: 'msedge' } },
],
Channel availability depends on the operating system and installed browser. Treat these as additional targets, not assumed substitutes for every Chromium-based browser.
Use device profiles for responsive coverage, not as proof of hardware behavior
Playwright device profiles can configure user agent, screen and viewport dimensions, touch capability, locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme. These settings are useful for responsive layouts and configuration-dependent flows. They simulate conditions; they do not establish that every behavior on a physical phone or tablet has been reproduced. Profile availability can vary by Playwright version. See the Playwright emulation documentation.
Import a representative device descriptor and add it as a project:
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{ name: 'chromium', use: { browserName: 'chromium' } },
{
name: 'mobile-chrome-profile',
use: { ...devices['Pixel 7'] },
},
],
});
Choose profiles that reflect the layouts and interactions you need to verify rather than adding every listed device. For Safari on iOS, device-dependent behavior, or other cases where actual hardware matters, test on the target environment or use a hosted service that supports the precise combination.
Know what your automation layer can and cannot establish
Playwright provides browser-engine automation and configurable emulation. That is effective for repeatable functional checks across engines, viewport behavior, and many browser settings. It is not evidence that every operating system build, branded browser version, or physical device behaves identically.

WebDriver is a separate, standards-based interface for scripts to inspect and control browser behavior. It is platform- and language-neutral; it is an automation interface, not a complete testing strategy. The W3C standards page lists a Recommendation dated 5 June 2018 and a Working Draft dated 2 July 2026; draft details should not be treated as final. Read the W3C WebDriver specification.
Choose local, self-managed, or hosted execution
Local Playwright execution is a straightforward starting point when the required engines and environments are available on developer and CI machines. A self-managed WebDriver grid or hosted browser/device service can extend access to environments that are difficult to maintain locally. Choose based on the exact coverage and operational needs rather than assuming a service is automatically faster or more reliable.
| Approach | Useful when | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Local Playwright | You need a repeatable baseline across Playwright-supported browser engines and configured profiles. | Browser binaries match the Playwright version; the CI operating system and dependencies are controlled. |
| Self-managed WebDriver grid | You need a standards-based browser-control setup and can operate the grid infrastructure. | Required browsers, OS versions, capacity, queue behavior, diagnostics, and access controls. |
| Hosted browser/device service | You need remote browser or device combinations beyond what your local setup provides. | Exact browser, OS, device, and framework-version support; parallel capacity, queue behavior, logs, traces, network diagnostics, and access controls. |
For hosted coverage, verify combinations individually rather than relying on a broad claim such as “supports Playwright.” BrowserStack documents browser, OS, device, and Playwright-version combinations; consult its supported browsers and OS documentation and Playwright documentation for the targets you need. Supported versions and combinations can change.
Put the matrix in CI and make failures diagnosable
Run the same critical test suite for each configured project, and preserve enough context to identify which project failed. Keep the Playwright version, browser binaries, CI operating system, and dependency installation consistent. Capture traces or logs using the facilities supported by your framework or provider; do not assume every environment offers the same diagnostics.
A practical rollout is to establish the core-engine baseline first, then add device profiles or remote environments for risks the baseline cannot cover. Review failures by project and environment before deciding whether to expand or adjust the matrix.

Troubleshooting common cross-browser test failures
Playwright reports that a browser executable is missing
Cause: The browser binaries were not installed, or the installed binaries do not match the Playwright package version. Fix: Run npx playwright install after updating Playwright. In Linux CI, install required operating-system dependencies with npx playwright install --with-deps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA test fails in one project but passes in another
Cause: The failure may be a genuine engine difference, a timing assumption, or an environment-specific configuration. Fix: Read the project name in the report, reproduce that project locally, and inspect its trace or logs before changing the test. Avoid hiding a real compatibility issue by simply excluding the failing browser.
A mobile profile looks right, but a physical device does not
Cause: Emulation configures browser context properties; it does not reproduce every hardware, operating-system, or browser implementation detail. Fix: Validate on the actual target device or on a hosted service that explicitly supports the required device and OS combination.
A hosted service cannot run the requested target
Cause: The provider may not support that exact browser, OS, device, or Playwright version combination. Fix: Check the current supported-combinations documentation before designing the matrix around that target; choose a supported environment or another execution approach if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does running Playwright on Chromium test Google Chrome?
Not necessarily. If branded Chrome itself is a requirement, configure the Chrome channel explicitly and verify it is available in the target environment.
Is WebDriver the same thing as Selenium?
No. WebDriver is the W3C browser-control interface; Selenium is one automation ecosystem that can use WebDriver.
