Build your testing fundamentals and practical engineering skills first, then choose how AI fits your work: use generative AI to support testing, test AI-based products, or develop both skill sets. Certifications can provide structured study, but they do not guarantee a job or a career outcome.
Start with testing craft
Software testing is more than running a checklist. It is a way to investigate a product, find risks, design useful checks, communicate what you learn, and give the team feedback while there is still time to act on it.

Practice on a real or sample application. For each exercise, record what you assume, which risks matter, what you tested, what you found, and what remains uncertain. Explain why you chose those tests and what trade-offs you made. This makes your reasoning visible, not just the final pass-or-fail result.

Learn to ask useful testing questions
- What could go wrong for a user, and how serious would the impact be?
- Which inputs, states, permissions, devices, or network conditions could change the result?
- What evidence would show that a feature behaves as intended?
- Which checks should be repeated after a change, and which risks still need investigation?
- How can you describe a defect so another person can reproduce and assess it?
There is no single entry-level curriculum or hiring checklist established by the official certification sources discussed here. Treat these exercises as a practical way to build and demonstrate judgment, not as a promise that a particular portfolio will satisfy every employer.

Build engineering fluency alongside testing
Learn to work with the development workflow and test automation used in the roles and organizations you are targeting. That can mean reading application code, understanding how changes are reviewed and deployed, tracing a failure through logs, and automating a meaningful set of checks. The right tools depend on your target work; the official sources covered here do not establish one universally required programming language, framework, or tool.
A sensible progression is to understand the application and its risks, make a small repeatable check, then learn how that check fits into the team’s workflow. Automation should make feedback more useful or reliable; writing scripts without understanding what they verify is not a substitute for testing skill.
Choose the AI work you want to do
“AI in testing” can mean two different things. ISTQB distinguishes applying generative AI to testing work from testing products that use AI. The paths can overlap, but learning to prompt an LLM to draft conventional software tests does not by itself teach you to validate a machine-learning model.

| Path | What you work on | Distinctive concerns |
|---|---|---|
| Use generative AI in testing | Test analysis, design, automation, reporting, test infrastructure, and team processes supported by generative AI. | Prompt refinement, evaluating and improving outputs, hallucinations, reasoning errors, bias, privacy, and security. |
| Test AI-based products | AI or machine-learning product behavior, the data it uses, its models, and the development lifecycle. | Probabilistic behavior, non-determinism, dependence on data, input-data quality, model testing, and machine-learning development testing. |
| Combine both | Use generative AI in your testing process while also learning how to assess AI-based features or systems. | Keep the objectives distinct: an AI-assisted test process and evidence about an AI system’s quality are different things. |
If you want to use generative AI in test work
Practice with non-sensitive requirements and a tool approved for that information. Ask it to help analyze requirements, propose test ideas, draft automation, or organize a report. Then check each useful-looking output against the requirements and actual system behavior. Look for missing cases, invented details, reasoning errors, bias, and information that should not be disclosed. Treat generated work as a proposal to evaluate, not as verified test evidence.
If you want to test AI-based systems
Learn how data quality and input choices affect behavior, how to test a model, and how testing fits into the machine-learning development lifecycle. Because outputs can be probabilistic or non-deterministic, a single expected-value check may not be enough: define the behavior and quality criteria that matter, test representative conditions, and document how you interpret variable results. ISTQB’s CT-AI v2.0 material addresses AI-system quality characteristics and lifecycle activities including input data testing, model testing, and machine-learning development testing.
Make your practice visible
A small, well-explained portfolio project can show how you think. Choose a public sample application or a toy project that contains no confidential information, then:

- State the feature, assumptions, and risks you are investigating.
- Design representative tests and explain what each is intended to reveal.
- Automate a meaningful slice where automation improves repeatability or feedback.
- Show the results, including failures, limitations, and what you would investigate next.
- For an AI feature, include examples of variable outputs and describe a repeatable evaluation approach.
Do not publish private company code, data, credentials, or confidential prompts. A portfolio is a practical demonstration of reasoning, not an established universal employer requirement.

ISTQB’s CT-AI and CT-GenAI specialist exams described here both require the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL). That makes CTFL a prerequisite for those exams, not a universal prerequisite for getting a software testing job. Choose a specialist syllabus based on the work you want to learn.
| Certification | Best aligned with | Coverage and current version notes | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISTQB CT-AI | Testing AI-based systems. | Version 2.0 covers AI-system quality characteristics, data, model testing, and machine-learning development testing; it replaces v1.0. The English v1.0 version remains available through April 21, 2027, and non-English v1.0 versions through October 21, 2027. | CTFL |
| ISTQB CT-GenAI | Using generative AI in software testing. | The current syllabus is v1.1. Its topics include prompt engineering, evaluating and refining results, hallucinations, reasoning errors, bias, privacy and security, LLM-powered test solutions, and adoption. | CTFL |
Before enrolling, confirm the current syllabus, exam availability where you live, exam cost, and whether a training provider is accredited. The official certification information described here does not establish current prices or local availability. CT-GenAI can be studied independently from its syllabus and references; training may also be offered by accredited providers in face-to-face, virtual, or e-learning formats.

Think beyond the first certificate
ISTQB lists advanced modules including Test Analyst, Technical Test Analyst, Test Manager, and Test Engineering, followed later by Expert Level certifications. Those are possible study routes, not required steps for every tester. Select further study when it supports the responsibilities you want, rather than collecting credentials without a clear learning goal.

The ISTQB materials describe syllabus content and exam prerequisites; they do not quantify testing-job growth, AI-related displacement, salaries, interview success, or the career return from a certification. Do not treat a certificate, a new AI tool, or a forecast as a guarantee of employment. Build demonstrable skills and use job descriptions in your own market to decide which engineering and AI capabilities to practice next.
Or skip the browser setup
If you are building a portfolio and want repeatable screenshots of a web page, you can use a browser automation setup yourself or request a capture from ScreenshotNeo. For example, this cURL request returns an image capture; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
