AutoEndTasks in Windows 11: Stop Apps Closing Without Your Approval

Set the per-user AutoEndTasks registry value to 1 to make Windows close apps blocking sign-out, restart, or shutdown—or remove it to restore the choice prompt.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To have Windows automatically close apps that block sign-out, restart, or shutdown, set the per-user registry value AutoEndTasks to 1. To restore the choice prompt, remove that value. Save your work first: automatic closing can discard unsaved changes.

What AutoEndTasks changes

When an app does not close in time as Windows signs out, restarts, or shuts down, Windows may show an End Task prompt so you can decide whether to proceed or return to the desktop. With AutoEndTasks enabled, Windows force-closes apps rather than waiting for your choice and continues the operation. The setting is described as applying to the current user, through HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop.

Setting What happens when an app blocks the operation Main trade-off
AutoEndTasks set to 1 Windows force-closes the app and proceeds with sign-out, restart, or shutdown. You may lose unsaved work.
Value removed Windows can present an End Task prompt so you can choose whether to proceed. The operation may wait for your response.

Turn on AutoEndTasks

  1. Save your open documents and close applications normally. Force-closing an app can lose unsaved changes.
  2. Open Registry Editor. If Windows asks for permission, approve the prompt.
  3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop.
  4. In the right pane, find the string value named AutoEndTasks. If it is absent, create a string value (REG_SZ) with that name.
  5. Open AutoEndTasks and set its value data to 1. If it already exists, changing its data to 1 enables the behavior.
  6. Sign out and sign back in, or restart Windows, for the change to take effect.

Turn off AutoEndTasks

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop.
  2. In the right pane, delete the AutoEndTasks value. Do not delete the Desktop key or other values.
  3. Sign out and back in, or restart, to apply the change.

Removing the value is the default configuration described by the cited Windows 11 tutorial; it restores the possibility of being asked what to do when an app does not close. It does not guarantee a prompt for every app or every shutdown situation.

What to expect from the End Task prompt

The ElevenForum tutorial, updated September 15, 2026, associates the prompt with HungAppTimeout and describes a five-second default before the prompt appears. It also says an unanswered prompt returns to the desktop after one minute. These are values reported by that tutorial, not independently verified specifications for every Windows 11 build.

A Microsoft Press technical chapter published September 15, 2012 describes Windows sending WM_QUERYENDSESSION and WM_ENDSESSION messages during shutdown and waiting on HungAppTimeout; it gives 5,000 milliseconds as the default in the behavior it documents. That older reference helps explain the general shutdown sequence, but it should not be taken as confirmation that the same timeout applies to all current Windows 11 releases.

Scope and cautions

  • AutoEndTasks is described in the tutorial as a per-user registry setting. Changing it under HKEY_CURRENT_USER affects the account whose registry hive you edit.
  • This is not a fix for every shutdown blocker, and behavior may vary by Windows build or application.
  • Do not confuse this setting with Windows Update restart scheduling or service shutdown timeouts. Microsoft’s device-restart guidance covers update restart controls, not the behavior of AutoEndTasks.
  • Microsoft documentation located for this subject does not define the exact AutoEndTasks value for Windows 11. The registry steps here are documented by a third-party Windows 11 tutorial, while the shutdown-message explanation comes from older Microsoft Press technical material.
