Auto Insert Notification is a legacy Windows setting for detecting when a CD or DVD is inserted. On older systems, that detection could trigger AutoRun or open/play media, depending on the disc and configuration. It is not a phone alert or a standalone product.
What Auto Insert Notification means
In older Windows terminology, Auto Insert Notification refers specifically to CD-ROM media-change detection. The broader term is Media Change Notification (MCN); Auto Insert Notification is the CD-ROM-specific usage described in the historical AutoRun overview.

Compaq’s Software Guide describes it as an operating-system option that turns AutoRun on or off. The terms are related but not identical: notification is the system detecting a media change, while AutoRun is one possible response.

On the legacy systems described in manufacturer manuals, inserting a CD or DVD and closing the tray could prompt the computer to respond. The result depended on the disc and system configuration:

- A data disc containing an autorun file could start an application.
- An audio disc could open or begin playing in a media program.
- Video media could open in a suitable player.
Fujitsu’s LifeBook E-6664 manual describes automatic startup after insertion and tray closure. This did not mean every disc automatically ran arbitrary software; launching a program depended on the disc’s contents and the computer’s settings.
Why an optical-drive light might flash
A periodically flashing CD-ROM activity light can indicate that the system is checking the drive for media. Sony’s support explanation connects this polling behavior with Auto Play/Auto Insert Notification being enabled. A flashing light alone does not establish that a disc is present or that a program is running.

Should you change the setting?
Instructions for enabling or disabling Auto Insert Notification in older manuals use version-specific Device Manager controls and may require restarting the computer. For example, Sony’s guidance and the Fujitsu LifeBook C2010/C2111 manual describe older configuration paths; they are not reliable instructions for current Windows releases.
If you are maintaining a legacy computer, use documentation for its exact Windows version and optical drive before changing the setting. Do not transfer old registry or Device Manager steps to a current system without confirming that they apply.
