Australia’s new student visa measures took effect on 2 October 2026. For Indian applicants, the biggest practical changes concern applying for a Student visa from inside Australia, including family members, and changing education providers. They do not amount to a blanket ban on Indian students: the right pathway depends on where you apply, your current visa and study history, and whether an exception applies.
What changed for Indian students from 2 October 2026?
The Australian Government’s measures change rules for certain onshore Student visa applications, family applications and provider transfers. They affect applicants differently depending on their circumstances; the national measures do not set out a separate blanket rule for Indian applicants. The Department of Home Affairs’ current guidance and your individual checklist remain the references for your application.

Can I apply for an Australian Student visa while I’m in Australia?
If you hold another temporary visa
Most temporary visa holders, including Working Holiday Maker and Skills in Demand visa holders, can no longer apply for a Student visa while in Australia. The Government describes limited exemptions, including for school and PhD students and people affected by a provider default or course deferral. Do not assume an exception applies just because you are already in Australia or hold a particular temporary visa; confirm your eligibility with Home Affairs before lodging.

If you already hold a Student visa
A Student visa holder seeking another Student visa onshore must show genuine course progression. This requirement is distinct from the restrictions affecting people on other temporary visas. Check the current Home Affairs rules for your situation, including whether an exception applies.

If you must apply offshore
You must be outside Australia both when you lodge the application and when the visa is granted. Home Affairs says an onshore application lodged by someone who is required to apply offshore is invalid. If your current visa expires, that could affect your visa status and later eligibility. While an offshore application is being processed, you may return to Australia on another valid visa, but you must leave Australia again for the Student visa grant. An offshore application does not give you a bridging visa linked to that application.
Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules in force when lodged, including applications that included family members.
Can I take my spouse or children with me?
The new settings limit which students can include a partner or child. The Government identifies exceptions for PhD students, nationals of Pacific and ASEAN member countries, and students sponsored by Australian or foreign governments. India is not among the nationalities named for an exception, so an Indian passport alone does not qualify you. That does not mean every Indian applicant is barred from including family: another individual exception may apply.
The ability to add family as subsequent entrants has been removed under these settings. If your circumstances allow family to accompany you, their application must be made when you apply for your Student visa. In the described arrangements, an eligible student applying for a new visa onshore may include only family members already in Australia; families already together in Australia are not to be separated under those arrangements. Check that your case fits the applicable exception before making plans.
Can I change my college after arriving?
Transfers during the transition
Through 30 June 2027, non-school students generally must remain in their principal course for 12 months before seeking a transfer to another provider, an increase from the previous six-month period. Exceptions include exceptional circumstances or the provider or course ceasing to be registered. School students remain subject to the existing six-month restriction for their first registered school course.

Planned transfer stream from 2027
The Government says a new Student visa transfer stream is planned for 2027. From 1 July 2027, students applying through that stream will need to receive the new visa before starting with the new provider. Transfers are to be allowed at the same or a higher Australian Qualifications Framework level. The announced change would end the ability to arrive to study higher education and then transfer onshore to vocational education and training. These are forward-looking arrangements; check Home Affairs guidance before relying on them.
What should I prepare for the Student visa application?
Genuine Student answers and supporting evidence
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement applies to Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. Applicants answer questions about their current circumstances and ties, reasons for choosing the course and provider, understanding of study and life in Australia, the course’s benefit to their future, and other relevant information. Answers must be in English and are limited to 150 words each. An additional question applies if you previously held a Student visa or are applying in Australia from a non-student visa.

Attach supporting documents in ImmiAccount. Home Affairs encourages evidence such as academic and employment records and information about your financial circumstances, and says it gives more weight to statements supported by evidence. Its assessment considers your home-country circumstances, potential circumstances in Australia, the course’s value to your future, immigration history and other relevant matters. Explain your own study rationale and support it with documents; generic claims that do not match your records may undermine your explanation.
Financial and English evidence
Every Student visa applicant must declare sufficient funds for their stay. Whether you must attach documentary proof of financial capacity or English ability when lodging depends on the combined evidence framework and your personal document checklist. That framework considers your country of citizenship and your education provider’s evidence level. A streamlined outcome may reduce documents required at lodgement, but Home Affairs may still ask for further evidence. Run the checklist for your own case and provide the documents it requires.
Funds should cover your stay, and living-cost declarations should reflect your intended location. Actual living costs vary by area; do not rely on work in Australia to support yourself or your family. If English evidence is required and you are not exempt, provide evidence of an approved test score. An English-medium degree from India by itself should not be assumed to remove the visa evidence requirement: check the official exemption list and your checklist.

- Whether your current visa and study history allow an onshore application, or require you to apply from outside Australia.
- Whether a listed exception applies to your onshore application or family circumstances.
- Whether family must apply with you, and whether anyone already in Australia is covered by the described arrangements.
- How long you have been enrolled in your principal course and whether an exception permits a transfer sooner.
- Which financial and English documents your personal Home Affairs checklist requires.
