AR adds digital information to the world you can still see; VR replaces that view with a computer-generated environment. Mixed reality (MR) combines the two by anchoring digital objects to your surroundings and allowing them to interact with physical spaces. The right choice depends on whether your task needs environmental awareness or controlled immersion.

AR, VR and MR at a glance

Question Augmented reality (AR) Virtual reality (VR) Mixed reality (MR)
What you see Your physical surroundings with digital overlays A fully computer-generated scene Physical surroundings plus digital elements that stay anchored and can interact with them
Immersion Usually lower sensory isolation; you remain aware of the room High visual and audio immersion in a simulated world Variable, from room-aware overlays to highly immersive passthrough
Typical hardware Phone, tablet, see-through glasses or a headset Head-mounted display with positional tracking and controllers or hand tracking Headset with environment mapping, see-through optics or color passthrough
Digital content Placed over a surface, object or location Modeled entirely inside the virtual environment Anchored to real surfaces and responsive to the physical room
Strongest use cases Navigation, visualization, remote guidance and context-sensitive information Games, simulations, immersive lessons and repeatable training Spatial design, collaborative work and applications needing quick movement between real and digital spaces

Google summarizes the distinction this way: “VR can put you anywhere, and AR can bring anything to you.” Its explainer says VR “completely replaces the real world with computer-generated imagery,” while AR “adds pieces of computer-generated imagery to your environment.”

The European Commission similarly describes VR as interaction with virtual objects and other users in three-dimensional environments. It defines AR as real-time digital information integrated with physical surroundings, using devices such as smartphones, tablets and smart glasses.

How the technologies work

Augmented reality

AR uses a camera or optical sensors to understand a location, surface or object, then renders text, graphics or 3D models in the matching position. A phone app can place furniture on a camera view; smart glasses can show directions while your eyes remain on the street. Because the physical world remains visible, AR is useful when the task depends on hands, tools, people or hazards around you.

Virtual reality

VR sends separate images to each eye through a head-mounted display and updates the scene as you turn or move. Positional tracking makes virtual objects appear stable relative to your movements. Controllers, hand tracking and spatial audio provide interaction cues, while the headset can intentionally block the room to create a controlled setting.

Mixed reality and passthrough

MR is not simply a marketing synonym for AR. It describes digital content that understands the physical environment well enough to remain anchored, hide behind real objects, respond to surfaces or support interaction between real and virtual elements. Passthrough headsets use external cameras to show a live view of the room inside an otherwise immersive display, allowing one device to operate in VR and MR modes.

Current device examples

Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S

Meta’s developer documentation identifies Quest 3 and Quest 3S as providing full-color passthrough. Their external cameras show the physical environment, digital objects can be placed on real surfaces, and users can move between immersive VR and the room view without removing the headset. They are therefore concrete examples of hardware spanning VR and MR, rather than pure VR-only devices.

Which is better for common tasks?

Gaming

Choose VR when the game benefits from a complete world, room-scale movement or a stable simulation that excludes visual distractions. AR or MR works better for games that need your furniture, floor or other players to remain part of the play space. A passthrough headset can support both styles, but the available games and tracking quality vary by platform.

Work and collaboration

AR is a strong fit for heads-up instructions, remote assistance, warehouse picking, field service and navigation because workers can keep sight of equipment and colleagues. MR can place shared 3D models on a table or factory floor. VR is more appropriate for meetings, design reviews or simulations where a controlled virtual room is more useful than seeing the actual workplace.

Training and simulation

VR makes repeatable scenarios possible: a trainee can rehearse an emergency, machine procedure or customer interaction without changing the physical site. AR supports training at the real workstation by labeling parts or displaying the next step. MR combines real tools with virtual guidance when accurate spatial alignment matters.

Education and learning

VR can transport a class to historical, scientific or otherwise inaccessible locations, while AR can annotate specimens, maps or equipment in the classroom. Evidence is promising but context-specific. Meta’s 2024 newsroom article reported that, in a 2022 Morehouse College result, students who learned in VR had an average final test score of 85 versus 78 for students learning in person. The same article cited an XR Association survey in which 77% of educators said these technologies ignite curiosity and improve engagement. Neither figure establishes a universal advantage for every learner, subject or XR program.

Trade-offs that matter in practice

  • Environmental awareness: AR keeps the room visible; VR intentionally limits it; MR depends on cameras, mapping and passthrough quality.
  • Field of view: Narrow optical see-through displays can make overlays feel like a small window, while VR displays usually cover more of your view but may reduce awareness of people and objects nearby.
  • Tracking and input: Compare positional accuracy, hand tracking, controller ergonomics and how reliably the system recognizes surfaces in your lighting conditions.
  • Comfort and battery: Weight, heat, prescription-lens support, facial pressure, cable management and battery runtime can determine whether a device is usable for an entire session.
  • Isolation and accessibility: VR’s separation from the room can aid focus but complicate communication and mobility. Check captions, audio controls, seated modes, reach requirements and options for users with visual, hearing or motion-related disabilities.
  • Content ecosystem: A technically capable headset is of limited value if the applications, enterprise integrations or classroom materials you need are unavailable in your region.
  • Safety controls: Look for boundary or guardian systems, passthrough shortcuts, adjustable exposure and clear instructions for shared spaces.
  • Total cost: Include the headset, controllers or accessories, compatible phone or computer, software subscriptions, replacement parts, training and support. Prices and regional availability change, so verify them at purchase time.

How to choose between AR, VR and MR

  1. Define what must remain visible. If users need to see tools, traffic, patients or teammates continuously, start with AR or MR. If the surroundings are a distraction or a hazard to the simulation, start with VR.
  2. Decide whether the scenario must be repeatable. Choose VR for controlled, resettable simulations. Choose AR when the value comes from the actual site, equipment or location.
  3. Specify the interaction model. List required controllers, hand gestures, voice input, eye tracking, keyboards, physical tools and multiplayer features before selecting hardware.
  4. Score candidate systems. Rate each option for immersion, environmental awareness, portability, tracking and input, comfort, content ecosystem, accessibility, safety and total cost.
  5. Pilot in the real setting. Test lighting, network performance, floor space, privacy, cleaning procedures, onboarding time and whether users can complete the task without fatigue or confusion.
  6. Plan the fallback. Provide a non-headset workflow, especially for classrooms, public-facing work, users who cannot wear a headset and situations where batteries, tracking or connectivity fail.

Safety, motion and ergonomics

ISO/IEC 5927:2024 covers safe setup and use of AR and VR systems in consumer and enterprise settings, including visual vection, motion and related safe-use considerations. ISO 9241-820:2024 provides ergonomic guidance for interactions in immersive environments.

Follow the device manufacturer’s safety instructions and keep the play or work area clear. With AR or passthrough, camera views can misrepresent distance, lighting or fast-moving hazards, so maintain awareness of people, stairs, vehicles and equipment. Take regular breaks, adjust fit and display settings, and stop immediately if you experience nausea, dizziness, eye strain, headache, disorientation or other discomfort. No modality is universally safer; risk depends on the hardware, content, environment, session length and user.

A practical buying checklist

  • Does the device support the applications and operating systems you need?
  • Is it standalone, phone-powered or dependent on a gaming PC or workstation?
  • Does it provide the required field of view, color passthrough, surface mapping and tracking accuracy?
  • Can users operate it seated, with glasses, hearing aids, mobility aids or alternative input devices?
  • What are the measured battery life, charging method, cleaning process and replaceable parts?
  • How are boundaries, emergency room view and shared-device privacy handled?
  • Are software licenses, device management, support and content updates included in the budget?
  • Can you test it with representative users and the actual environment before committing?
