You can use Google’s Places API (New) to check which place candidates appear for a consistent search of each branch. The results are observations for a particular query and configuration—not a complete inventory of Google Maps or a universal ranking report. For an authorized listing you need to correct, use Business Profile rather than treating Places search as an owner dashboard.
What a Places API audit can—and cannot—tell you
Places API (New) provides search methods that return place candidates. Nearby Search (New) searches within a geographic area and can filter by place type; Text Search (New) searches from a text query and orders candidates by perceived relevance. Nearby Search can rank by distance or popularity, while prominence is its default ranking behavior.

A result set does not prove that every branch is represented. Google notes that some places may be uncategorized or rank too low to appear in Nearby Search. Text Search results depend on the query and its context; if you omit location bias or restriction, the documentation says IP biasing is used by default. A missing result therefore means “not returned for this query and configuration,” not necessarily “not on Google Maps.” Nearby Search, Text Search, and Google’s Places API FAQ describe these behaviors and limitations.

Set up a repeatable comparison
Begin with your organization’s current branch roster. It is the baseline for checking coverage; an API response is not a substitute for that authoritative list. Decide what you want to learn before choosing a search: whether a named branch can be found, what nearby discovery returns, whether address or category details are correct, or which listing may need correction.

For comparisons across branches or dates, keep the relevant query settings consistent, or record where they differ. The API does not prescribe a formal audit standard; consistency is a practical way to make observations easier to interpret.
- Use the same query style—Text Search or Nearby Search—and comparable wording for each branch.
- Record the geographic bias or restriction, including the area or radius, and any place-type filters or ranking preference.
- Keep language and region settings consistent where applicable.
- Save the observation timestamp and the fields requested for each check.
These dimensions matter because the endpoints expose different search controls and results. Nearby Search also allows up to 50 types in each type-restriction category; that is a technical limit, not a measure of coverage or accuracy. Run searches and request only useful fields
For each roster entry, search using a query that identifies the business and its locality, or define a consistent geographic area and relevant types for Nearby Search. Compare returned candidates against the roster using name and address checks; similar branch names, language choices, and location context can complicate matching.

Place Details, Nearby Search, and Text Search require a response field mask. Google says a request without one returns an error. Request only the information needed for the audit—for example, display name, formatted address, place ID, primary type, business status, or Google Maps URI when the endpoint supports the field and your question needs it. Record findings without overstating them
Keep each observation tied to its query configuration and date. A useful record can distinguish a candidate that matched a branch from one that did not, while retaining the fields needed to explain the match. Do not turn a single search result into a claim about how every Maps user sees the location: language, query, geographic context, filters, and ranking mode can change what is returned.
Places content also has storage and display rules. Google documents an exception that allows place IDs to be stored indefinitely; that exception does not mean other Places content can be copied into a permanent local database without restriction. Follow the applicable attribution requirements when displaying Places content, and check the current policies for your use case. See Google’s Places API policies.

Correct a listing through the right Google service
Places API is for retrieving place information; its search methods are not a workflow for changing a business listing. If your organization owns or is authorized to manage the listing, Google directs owners to Business Profile to add, verify, and manage listings on Google Maps. If you do not own a place, Google says you can suggest changes. Business Profile API access has separate policies and authorization constraints. Estimate cost before auditing at scale
Places API uses pay-as-you-go pricing by SKU and request fields. Enable billing and credentials for the project, then estimate the planned mix of search and details calls against current prices and quotas. Field selection affects billing: when a request includes fields from different tiers, Google bills at the highest applicable SKU for that request. A field mask can help limit unnecessary fields, but it does not replace checking the SKU mapping and current pricing.
