You can generate an audio excerpt on demand in Rails without a background job queue, but Active Storage does not provide a documented built-in generator for playable audio clips. Treat excerpt creation as custom application work: route it through a controller action, account for the time and web-worker capacity it consumes, and decide whether repeated requests should reuse a generated file.
Can Active Storage preview audio files?
Active Storage can analyze audio and store metadata such as duration and bit rate. Analysis does not create a shortened audio file. Rails documents built-in previewers for image representations of videos and PDFs; it does not document a built-in feature that generates playable audio excerpts.

First clarify what “preview” means in your interface. If users only need to listen to the uploaded file, serve the original attachment through an appropriately authorized route and use a player in your application. If users need a shorter excerpt or a converted version, you need to generate or otherwise supply a separate audio asset.

Make excerpt generation an explicit request handled by a controller action, rather than doing it while Rails renders a view. The Rails representation API advises against synchronous preview processing in views and recommends linking to a controller action that processes on demand. The same pattern gives you a clear place to enforce authorization when the attachment is not public.

- Choose the output. Define what your application means by an excerpt, including its length and any required conversion. Rails’ Active Storage documentation does not prescribe an audio clipping command, Ruby wrapper, codec profile, or sample implementation for this feature.
- Implement the media operation. Use a suitable media tool in your application to create the clip or converted file. Rails documents FFmpeg as an external dependency for video previews and ffprobe for video and audio analysis, but those references do not establish a tested compatibility matrix or a specific audio-excerpt workflow.
- Expose the work through a controller action. Have the action verify the user’s right to access the source, perform or obtain the requested output, and return it for playback. Do not assume Active Storage’s
previewmethod will produce a playable audio excerpt. - Decide how to handle repeat requests. If the same excerpt may be requested again, consider whether to retain or cache the derived output rather than regenerate it every time. The Rails sources cited here do not establish a particular caching strategy or guarantee its correctness.
The work still happens during an HTTP request in this design. Rails’ Active Job guide explains that background jobs move long-running or non-critical work out of the request-response cycle to keep web requests responsive. Without a queue, the request that triggers generation must wait for that work, and the web worker handling it remains occupied.

Choose based on whether a shortened asset is genuinely needed, how much request-time work your application can tolerate, whether repeated generation is acceptable, what formats you intend to support, and how access to uploaded media should be controlled.

What do Rails and FFmpeg guarantee?
The current Rails Active Storage guide identifies FFmpeg v3.4 or later as a requirement for video previews and ffprobe for video and audio analysis. These are external applications that must be installed separately; Rails does not install them. Rails 7.2 documentation likewise identifies FFmpeg for video previews and ffprobe for video and audio analysis, including audio duration and bit-rate metadata.
The FFmpeg v3.4+ requirement applies to the documented video-preview workflow. It is not a stated minimum for every custom audio-excerpt implementation. The reviewed Rails documentation also does not specify supported codecs, maximum upload size, preview duration, processing speed, or concurrent-request capacity for a custom audio endpoint. Establish and test those limits for the media tools, application code, and deployment you actually use.
