Audio comb filtering: How it works and how to reduce it

Audio comb filtering is the pattern of frequency boosts and cancellations that occurs when a signal combines with a delayed version. Learn its causes and practical remedies.

Audio comb filtering is a repeating pattern of frequency boosts and cancellations caused when a sound combines with a delayed copy of itself or another sufficiently similar sound. Because the delay changes the signals’ phase relationship differently at different frequencies, some frequencies reinforce while others weaken or disappear.

How a comb filter works

When two versions of a signal arrive together, a frequency component is reinforced if the versions line up in phase at that frequency. If they arrive half a cycle apart, they cancel; between those conditions, they partly reinforce or cancel. A fixed time delay therefore creates alternating peaks and notches in the combined frequency response. Those repeating notches and peaks resemble the teeth of a comb, as described in Dynaudio’s acoustics appendix.

The delay sets the spacing and locations of the peaks and nulls. In an instructional example, the University of California, Irvine Max Cookbook shows that a 1 ms delay reinforces whole-number multiples of 1,000 Hz and suppresses frequencies halfway between them, including 1,500 Hz. This illustrates the timing relationship; it is not a measurement of how often comb filtering occurs in recordings. The University of California, San Diego’s Music Signal Processing textbook likewise explains that a delay network’s gain varies with frequency, with reinforcement when whole periods fit the delay and cancellation at a half-period.

Where audio comb filtering comes from

Room reflections

A microphone or listener may receive sound both directly from a source and later after it reflects off a surface. The two paths have different travel times, so their combination can create peaks and dips in the frequency response. The result depends on the path difference and the reflected sound’s level, as discussed in Dynaudio’s acoustics appendix and Shure’s guidance on acoustic treatment.

Multiple microphones

When two microphones capture the same source from different distances, the sound reaches them at different times. Combining the recordings can produce peaks and dips; how deep they are depends in part on the signals’ relative levels. Shure discusses this interference in its material on phase cancellation in recording. The timing offset may be fixed, but the effect can vary as sources or microphones move.

Deliberate delay processing

Comb filtering can also be intentional. Flanging combines a signal with a delayed copy and changes the delay over time, moving the peaks and notches through the spectrum. That movement creates the characteristic sweeping sound. Sound On Sound’s explanation of comb filtering discusses both this effect and unwanted coloration in recordings.

What comb filtering sounds like

Unwanted comb filtering can make a sound seem colored, hollow, or less natural because some frequency ranges are emphasized while others are reduced. The exact impression depends on the delay, the delayed sound’s level, and the material being combined. With flanging, the changing notches are an audible effect rather than a static coloration.

How to reduce unwanted comb filtering

First identify the delayed path: a room reflection, another microphone, or an inserted effect. The practical remedy depends on that cause.

  • For a room reflection: Adjust the source or microphone position, or reduce the reflection where practical. Shure describes gobos as one possible isolation option; the appropriate treatment depends on the room and recording goal.
  • For multiple microphones: Review microphone placement and the timing relationship between tracks. If appropriate, alter placement, isolate sources, or align tracks before summing them.
  • For deliberate processing: Reduce or remove the delay if the moving coloration is unwanted; keep it if the flanging effect is the goal.

These steps address different causes rather than offering one universal correction. Changing a microphone position may alter a reflection or arrival-time difference; track alignment targets timing between recorded signals. The source and the intended sound determine which response makes sense.

Why a polarity switch is not a universal fix

A polarity switch reverses a waveform’s sign. A time delay instead creates a phase difference that changes with frequency, so reversing polarity cannot generally remove the alternating peaks and cancellations caused by the delay. Sound On Sound notes that a console or preamp “phase” button usually inverts polarity; it is not a continuously adjustable phase control. A polarity inversion can cancel otherwise matching signals, but that is not the same as correcting every delayed-path problem.
