New Zealand authorities have recalled several rangoli powder and coloured-sand products after asbestos was detected in some tested samples. The Ministry of Education says listed products must no longer be used. WorkSafe’s instructions for opened or used sand at a workplace are to restrict access, avoid cleanup, and contact a licensed asbestos professional.
The reported Auckland early-learning-centre closure has not been confirmed in the official material available here. No centre-specific statement establishes which product was involved, whether anyone was exposed, or whether the service has reopened.
What is confirmed about the recalls
The Ministry of Education’s Early Learning Bulletin, Issue 164, dated 3 September 2026, says laboratory testing detected asbestos in some samples of rangoli powder products recalled by MBIE. It advises holders to stop using listed products, store them securely, and dispose of them safely. This does not mean every rangoli product, colour, or batch is contaminated.

What is known—and not known—about the Auckland centre
The closure is the subject indicated by the report, but the centre-specific details are not established by the official sources cited here. They do not identify the service, name a product used there, describe affected rooms, provide an exposure assessment, or state whether or when it reopened. A Reddit search result dated 1 October 2026 used the headline “Ponsonby early learning service closes over rangoli powder asbestos fears,” but the post could not be opened and is not independent confirmation.
Accordingly, the recall should not be treated as proof that asbestos was found at this centre or that children or staff were exposed. Those conclusions require information specific to the site, such as a statement from the centre or regulator and any professional assessment.

If listed coloured sand is at an early-learning workplace
WorkSafe New Zealand says recalled coloured sand should be managed as friable asbestos until further notice. Its page was originally dated 12 November 2025 and updated 2 December 2025. The appropriate response differs depending on whether the product is sealed or has been opened or used.
Sealed container
Move it to a secure place away from people. Do not open or use it. Follow the relevant official disposal guidance rather than trying to handle the contents yourself.

Opened or used sand
- Have people leave the affected area for a sand-free, well-ventilated area.
- Prevent access to the affected area.
- Do not attempt to clean up the sand. WorkSafe’s instruction is: “Do not attempt to clean it up.”
- Promptly contact a licensed asbestos assessor or removalist. WorkSafe says not to return until contamination is understood and appropriate clearance has been obtained.
- If an educational facility used the sand, notify the Ministry of Education and advise what action was taken.
WorkSafe says its approach based on testing to date requires Class A removal followed by a Class A clearance inspection. This is workplace guidance and should not be generalized into a household cleanup procedure. WorkSafe also directs workers concerned about possible exposure to an occupational medicine physician or equivalent specialist. See WorkSafe’s coloured-sand recall instructions.
Material that is not on the recall list
If you cannot verify whether a product is covered, do not assume that it is either contaminated or safe. Avoid using suspect material while checking the product details against the official recall notices; if opened or used at a workplace, seek advice from a licensed asbestos professional instead of attempting cleanup.

What preliminary simulated-play testing can—and cannot—show
An Australian government agency’s 2 July 2026 summary of preliminary Auckland University of Technology research described 15 samples: 10 craft-sand samples, four asbestos-confirmed moulding-sand samples, and one control. Airborne asbestos fibres were detected during simulated play and cleanup for 9 of the 10 craft-sand samples. None were detected in the four moulding-sand samples or the control during the simulated play.
The results are not a health-risk estimate for the Auckland centre. The summary says the full study had not yet been peer reviewed or published at that time and that conclusions about potential health implications were limited. The absence of detected airborne fibres in those moulding-sand samples does not establish that asbestos-containing material is safe. The study does not establish what product, if any, was used at the centre.

MBIE’s Pavitrom notice, citing Health New Zealand advice, says asbestos-related health conditions typically develop over 15 to 40 years; risk depends on asbestos type and quantity and duration of exposure. That timeframe cannot predict an individual’s outcome, and the official material cited here supplies no exposure or health-outcome figure for the Auckland centre. Read the agency summary of the preliminary AUT study.
