“Attention Is All You Need”: What the 2017 Paper Actually Changed

The 2017 paper introduced the Transformer, using self-attention instead of recurrence or convolution and reporting strong results on two machine-translation benchmarks.

“Attention Is All You Need” introduced the Transformer, a sequence-model architecture built around attention rather than recurrent steps or convolution. In experiments on two 2014 machine-translation benchmarks, its authors reported strong translation scores and said the model was more parallelizable and required less training time than contemporary approaches. Those results help explain the paper’s importance; they do not mean the paper alone caused every later development in AI.

What the paper proposed

Vaswani and co-authors submitted “Attention Is All You Need” to arXiv on 12 June 2017, and it appeared at NeurIPS 2017. The arXiv record currently lists version 7, revised 2 August 2023. The paper’s central contribution was the Transformer: an architecture for sequence tasks based solely on attention mechanisms, dispensing with recurrence and convolution entirely.

That was a change in how the model handled relationships between elements in a sequence. In recurrent models, information moves through tokens by way of a series of recurrent steps. The Transformer instead uses self-attention so that each position can build a representation informed by other positions in the input. This gives it a way to relate words that are far apart without relying on a chain of recurrent updates.

The authors summarized the proposal as “a new simple network architecture, the Transformer, based solely on attention mechanisms, dispensing with recurrence and convolutions entirely.” Read the paper on arXiv or view its NeurIPS 2017 paper PDF.

What the experiments demonstrated

The paper evaluated the Transformer on WMT 2014 English-to-German and English-to-French machine translation. These are the results reported by the authors for those experiments—not current benchmark records or a direct comparison with modern systems.

Task Reported result Training detail
WMT 2014 English-to-German 28.4 BLEU Training setup for this result is not stated in the abstract.
WMT 2014 English-to-French 41.8 BLEU 3.5 days on eight GPUs

The paper also applied the architecture to English constituency parsing. Its abstract reports that the Transformer was more parallelizable and required significantly less training time in the translation experiments. These are the authors’ findings in the context of their experiments, not a guarantee that every attention-based model trains faster on every task or hardware setup. The paper’s publication record and abstract are available from Google Research.

Why removing recurrence mattered

A recurrent model processes a sequence through successive steps, which can limit how much computation runs in parallel across positions. Self-attention gives the Transformer another route: positions can draw on information from other positions in the input rather than passing all context through a single recurrent chain. That design made greater parallelization possible in the authors’ translation experiments.

Attention is the mechanism, not a complete explanation for every capability of later language models. The 2017 paper’s evidence concerns its architecture and results on specified tasks. It should not be read as proving that attention alone accounts for the abilities of later large language models.

What “changed everything” gets right—and overstates

The phrase is a headline, not a measured conclusion of the paper. The defensible historical claim is narrower: the work proposed a notable alternative to recurrent and convolutional sequence models and reported strong results on two established translation benchmarks, alongside improved parallelizability and training time in those experiments.

In an explanation published on 31 August 2017, co-author Jakob Uszkoreit described the Transformer as “a novel neural network architecture based on a self-attention mechanism” and said the authors believed it particularly well suited for language understanding. He also described its performance against recurrent and convolutional models on the academic English-to-German and English-to-French benchmarks. Read Uszkoreit’s Google Research explanation.

It does not, by itself, quantify the architecture’s later adoption or prove that this one paper caused every subsequent advance in AI. Its importance is best understood through the specific architectural shift and results it documented.
