Yes—if you use an iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, install the latest iOS update and check for an AT&T carrier settings update. AT&T warned some customers that calls, texts, mobile data and even 911 calls might fail. But as of October 2, 2026, neither iOS 27.0.1 nor the newly released AT&T carrier settings 72.1 had been confirmed as a fix.
What AT&T said about the iPhone 18 Pro Max problem
On October 1, 2026, AT&T texted some iPhone 18 Pro Max customers that their phones might not complete calls, texts or data connections, including calls to 911. The notice advised them to install iOS 27.0.1. The next day, an AT&T spokesperson told MacRumors that Apple had released a software update to address an issue that may affect those services on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max phones, and urged AT&T customers with the model to install the latest available software.
The reports describe intermittent or persistent trouble connecting to AT&T for calls, texts or data; some phones may show SOS. Earlier reports also included eSIM provisioning complaints. These reports establish that customers have encountered problems, but they do not provide a reliable count or show what proportion of AT&T customers are affected. The word “thousands” has appeared as a description of complaints, not as a measured estimate.
What to do if your iPhone 18 Pro Max is affected
- Install the latest available iOS version. Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts. AT&T specifically advised customers to update. Reports said some people remained unable to connect after installing iOS 27.0.1, so treat the update as recommended—not a guaranteed repair.
- Check for AT&T carrier settings. Open Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier settings prompt, if one is available. Apple released AT&T carrier settings version 72.1 on October 2, up from 72.0.2. MacRumors reported the release but said it was unclear whether it resolved the connectivity problem.
- If service still fails, contact AT&T or Apple. You can also visit an AT&T or Apple store for support. The available reporting does not establish a universal entitlement to a replacement or repair.
Will iOS 27.0.1 fix the AT&T signal problem?
That had not been established as of October 2. MacRumors reported that customers had said the update did not restore their cellular service. Its report on the update’s release notes said they described fixes for other bugs, not a specific AT&T connectivity fix. The outlet also cited an alleged internal AT&T email characterizing iOS 27.0.1 as helping mitigate future impacts; that description was reported, not independently verified.

Apple’s carrier settings 72.1 update is a separate update from iOS. Its release may involve carrier configuration or connectivity changes, but the timing alone does not show that it fixes this issue. MacRumors also reported that iOS 27.0.1 was required during iPhone 18 Pro Max setup; that setup requirement is not evidence that the update resolves AT&T service failures.
Why does the phone say SOS?
SOS indicates that the phone is not connecting to its regular cellular service. In the reported cases, some iPhone 18 Pro Max users had trouble reaching AT&T for calls, messages or data. The reporting does not establish a single cause: it could not determine whether the issue involves software, carrier configuration, eSIM provisioning, hardware or a combination.

MacRumors reported that U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max models use a Qualcomm cellular modem, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s C2 modem worldwide, as does the iPhone 18 Pro Max outside the United States. The report said it was unclear whether that modem difference contributes; it is not evidence of a confirmed hardware defect.

AT&T’s reported notice specifically warned that 911 calls might not complete on affected phones. If your AT&T service is impaired, do not assume an emergency call will go through from that device. Keep access to another working phone or another available way to contact emergency services.
