The right router for AT&T depends first on your service and existing equipment. For AT&T Internet or Fiber, the provider’s gateway still connects your home to the service; a retail router is generally an addition, not a universal replacement. Internet Air uses an All-Fi Hub, while legacy DSL has a separate modem-and-PPPoE setup. Identify your equipment before shopping, then choose a router for the specific need—more network control, wired connections, or better coverage.
First identify your AT&T service and equipment
AT&T’s setup differs by connection type, so a router that works behind one device should not be assumed to replace another. AT&T says its Wi-Fi gateway connects the home to AT&T Internet or Fiber and provides Wi-Fi. Common gateway models include BGW320, BGW210, Pace 5268, NVG599, and NVG589; the list is not exhaustive. AT&T’s equipment guide was last updated April 15, 2024.

AT&T Internet and Fiber
Plan on keeping the supplied gateway in the connection path if you add a separate router. AT&T documents IP Passthrough as a way for the gateway to share its dynamic WAN IP address with one device on the local network, such as a third-party router. The gateway remains part of the setup; passthrough is not the same as removing it.
AT&T Internet Air
Internet Air uses an All-Fi Hub to connect to AT&T’s wireless network and provide Wi-Fi. The available AT&T documentation does not establish that a retail router can replace this hub. Do not buy a router expecting it to take over the hub’s service connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Legacy AT&T DSL
AT&T’s DSL instructions describe a different arrangement: connect the DSL modem by Ethernet to the router’s WAN or Internet port, then configure PPPoE in the router using the AT&T DSL credentials. The exact interface varies by manufacturer. These DSL instructions are not the Fiber or Internet Air setup. AT&T’s DSL support page, last updated March 14, 2025, also says its technical support supports AT&T routers only. See AT&T’s instructions for connecting a non-AT&T router to DSL.
What should you buy a router for?
There is no source-backed universal “best router for AT&T” model: AT&T does not certify individual third-party retail models in the reviewed material, and no router was independently tested for this guide. Choose by the job you need the equipment to do, and verify the model’s specifications and setup support before purchasing.

| Your need | What to look for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Add routing features or manage your own network | A Wi-Fi router with an Ethernet WAN/Internet port | For gateway-based Internet or Fiber, confirm it supports the configuration you intend to use with the AT&T gateway. AT&T documents IP Passthrough as one option. For DSL, confirm PPPoE support. |
| Connect more devices by cable | A router with enough Ethernet LAN ports for your wired devices | Count the ports you need and check the router’s WAN connection separately from its LAN ports. If replacing AT&T’s supplied Ethernet cable, AT&T recommends Cat6 or better. |
| Fix a weak Wi-Fi area | First assess gateway placement or an extender compatible with your exact gateway or hub | Check AT&T’s compatibility list before buying an extender; compatibility is not universal across gateways and hubs. |
AT&T says wired and Wi-Fi devices must be compatible with its network and generally does not support 802.11b or earlier. This is a baseline compatibility statement, not a certification of a particular router or a claim that one Wi-Fi generation is mandatory. AT&T’s network practices page provides the network-device guidance.

How to connect a router behind an AT&T gateway
For AT&T Internet or Fiber, check the exact gateway’s instructions before changing settings. AT&T’s IP Passthrough guidance is published under Business Internet support; it explains the feature but does not establish that every consumer gateway has the same menus or steps.

- Identify the gateway. Find the model number on the device or in its management interface, then use the instructions for that model rather than assuming all gateways share a procedure.
- Connect the equipment by Ethernet. Connect a gateway LAN port to the new router’s WAN or Internet port. Use a Cat6 or better cable if replacing the supplied Ethernet cable, as AT&T recommends.
- Choose the network arrangement. If you want the third-party router to receive the dynamic WAN IP through the gateway, follow the gateway-specific IP Passthrough instructions. AT&T says only one device can be in passthrough mode.
- Review the security and sharing consequences. AT&T says passthrough removes the gateway’s firewall protection for the selected device. It also notes possible file-sharing limitations between that device and other devices connected to the gateway. Configure and secure the downstream router accordingly.
- Check the result. Confirm that devices connected to the new router can reach the internet and that any desired local sharing works across the network arrangement you chose.
AT&T describes IP Passthrough as often suitable when a customer wants to connect third-party networking equipment to its gateway. See AT&T’s IP Passthrough and DMZplus guidance, last updated December 7, 2022. The article is labeled Business Internet support, so use it as feature guidance rather than assuming an identical consumer interface.
When an extender may be a better fit
If the problem is a weak signal in one part of the home, adding a router may not be the most direct fix. Check whether placement is limiting the existing Wi-Fi, then consider an extender confirmed for your gateway or hub. AT&T lists compatible AirTies extenders by equipment family, including Internet Air, and says it no longer sells AirTies 4920 and 4921. Review the current compatibility list before buying: AT&T’s Wi-Fi extender compatibility guide, updated June 18, 2026.

Do not remove the fiber equipment
For Fiber, the optical network terminal (ONT) is installed network equipment, not a retail router to swap out. AT&T says not to remove it. Its equipment guide also covers the fiber jack and cable guidance; leave installed fiber equipment in place and follow AT&T’s service-specific instructions if equipment needs attention. See the AT&T equipment guide.

Practical buying checklist
- Confirm whether your service is AT&T Internet, Fiber, Internet Air, or DSL.
- Record the exact gateway, hub, or modem model.
- For a router, check for an Ethernet WAN port; for DSL, also verify PPPoE support.
- For added Wi-Fi coverage, check extender compatibility against the exact AT&T equipment model.
- Count the Ethernet LAN ports you need and use Cat6 or better for a replacement cable.
- Understand the firewall implications before enabling IP Passthrough.
- Check current manufacturer specifications and support for the individual router; AT&T’s reviewed materials do not certify named retail models.
